The castle is surrounded by13 acres of land and features a fortification, a palace, and a small town. These days the castle features a Georgian and Victorian design based on a medieval structure, with Gothic features. As you would expect in any home of a monarch(君主), famous art pieces feature within the castle. At first glance, the snow that's changed from white to bright pink in the Italian Alps seems like a stunning feat of nature. But scientists say it may actually be a warning sign of environmental trouble.
Algae(藻类)are to thank or blame for the pink layer that coats the Presena Glacier in northern Italy. Scientists say it's not an uncommon phenomenon in the spring and summer, but they warn that it could become a problem if it starts occurring more frequently.
Biagio Di Mauro, director of the Institute of Polar Sciences(ISP)at Italy's National Research Council, traveled to the glacier to investigate the mysterious algae. While the phenomenon is well-documented, "there is relatively little scientific literature on this phenomenon, which has the direct effect of accelerating the melting of snow and ice," the institute said.
Photos from the trek show a massive algae bloom, turning large swaths of the glacier from white to pink. Di Mauro said on Twitter that the algae was likely Chlamydomonas nivalis (极地雪藻). According to a study published in the journal Nature, snow algae has influence on carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The algae is not dangerous, it is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the spring and summer periods in the middle latitudes but also at the Poles, Di Mauro said in a press release.
The algae could accelerate melting in the already fragile region. Climate change, contributing to 2020's unseasonably warm temperatures and lack of snow, is exacerbating the issue. Typically ice reflects the majority of the sun's radiation, but algae darken the ice, causing a decrease in reflectivity. This causes the snow to absorb more heat and melt more quickly. "Everything that darkens the snow causes it to melt because it accelerates the absorption of radiation," said Di Mauro, In order to flourish, the organisms need an available supply of water. So, as the ice melt even more algae will appear.
In May, Antarctica saw green snow, also caused by microscopic algae. At the time, scientists said that as the planet warms and more of Antarctica's snow melts, the algae will only continue to spread.
    24. What can we learn about snow's changing from white to bright pink?
    A. It is proved a masterpiece of nature. B. It occurs mainly because of the algae.
    C. It is a common phenomenon in the winter. D. It has led to serious environmental problems.
    25. What does the underlined word "exacerbating" in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Preventing. B. Lessening. C. Worsening. D. Delaying.
    26. What effect does the algae have?
    A. Speeding up the melt of snow and glacier. B. Reflecting more radiation of the sun.
    C. Causing unreasonable warm temperatures. D. Causing lack of snow in the fragile region.
    27. In which section can we read the text, in the newspaper?
    A. Sports. B. Environment. C. Economics. D. Entertainment.
    C
Parents play an important role in determining the educational success of their children. Their expectations for how well their children do at school and the environment at home are important determinants of achievements. Family influence is great in helping a child to realize academic accomplishment.
Children who live in homes in which the parents are academically successful, once they become parents, often feel that their job is to prepare their children to do likewise in school. They take their kids on vacation, and they spend time learning about local history at museums. They also may ensure that their kids have time to study and understand the importance of school attendance. School is a priority for these families, and children in these families grow up with a focus on learning.
Parents who have high academic expectations and those who adopt a more authoritarian parenting style for their children often have children who do well in school. However, it can be dangerous to set expectations too high, such that a child feels overly pressured to perform. These types of expectations should be balanced with those that relate directly to the children, so that they will be able to personally set and reach goals, work hard and to enjoy being curious.
Parents who support their children in their academic work also positively influence their performance. This takes different forms for families. Some parents might help with homework, or volunteer at school. Others provide a quiet study space, a consistent bedtime or a positive example of hard work and discipline. How parents show support for their child's academic career varies by family and by culture. No matter how it is shown, it is a vital part of a child's academic success to know their parents are behind their efforts.
A love of reading in a household can also positively affect a child's academic attainment. Learning new vocabulary, and how to predict, understand and respond to a text are just some of the skills children can learn at home and that are important in an academic environment. Reading books, newspapers, magazines and websites with children on a regular basis sets them up for success at school.
    28. In what aspect do parents influence children importantly?
    A. Family life. B. Adult life.
    C. Expectations of their jobs. D. Academic achievements.
    29. What may academically successful parents put first?
    A. Family travel. B. Historic knowledge.
    C. Attending school. D. Going to museums.
    30. How may academically successful parents influence their children's academic achievements?
    A. They ask their children to solve problems alone.
    B. They may invite teachers to their houses to teach.
    C. They put great pressure on their children.
    D. They can offer help to their children in different ways.
    31. What could be the best title for the text?
    A. Family influence on children's academic achievements
    B. How to improve the relation in a family
    C. What parents can do to help their children
    D. Benefits of successful parents
    D
Promising 42, 000 new homes across five residential districts, the eco-town of Tengah will be the 24th new settlement built by Singapore's government since World War II. It is, however, the first with centralized cooling, automated trash collection and a car-free town center, which conservationists hope offers a road map for slashing(大幅度削减)carbon emissions in the Southeast Asian city-state.
Although comparatively small, with a population of under 6 million people, Singapore's per capita emissions are higher than those of the UK, China and neighboring Malaysia, according to the country's National Climate Change Secretariat. That's due, in part, to air conditioning, which accounts for more than a third of typical household energy consumption. The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) has predicted that, by the end of this century, average daily temperatures in the city-state may be at least 34. 1 degrees Celsius "almost every day" during the eight warmest months of the year.
As such, keeping cool will, increasingly, be a necessity for residents. Kather than demonizing(妖魔化)air conditioning, Tengah's planners have instead sought to reimagine it. Cold water, chilled using solar power, will be piped through the district's homes, meaning residents don't need to install inefficient outdoor AC condensers. According to the town's energy provider, SP Group, this will generate carbon dioxide savings equivalent to taking 4, 500 cars off the roads each year.
Planners used computer modeling to simulate wind flow and heat gain across the town, helping to reduce the so-called urban heat island effect. Elsewhere, "smart" lights will switch off when public spaces are unoccupied, and trash will be stored centrally, with monitors detecting when garbage needs collecting. All residents will have access to the app allowing them to monitor their energy and water usage. Digital displays in each block will meanwhile inform occupants of their collective environmental impact, which could even encourage competition between residential blocks.
Regardless of whether the use of smart technology can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions or not, engaging residents with their own consumption could encourage behavioral change, according to Perrine Hamel, an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University's Asian School of the Environment. "Changing behavior is going to be an integral part of achieving climate targets and, of course, urban design is the first way to affect and change behavior," she said.
    32. What can we know about Tengah from Paragraph 1?
    A. It offers free cars to every resident. B. It faces serious environmental problems.
    C. It features a sustainable urban design. D. It's the first eco-town in Southeast Asia.
    33. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
    A. To predict climate change in the future.
    B. To warn people not to use air conditioning.
    C. To explain the importance of conserving energy.
    D. To stress the necessity of adopting efficient cooling.
    34. What will happen to Tengah's residents according to Paragraph 4?
    A. They will be able to check their energy usage.
    B. They will be required to dispose of garbage on their own.
    C. They will be involved in various competitive activities.
    D. They will no longer be affected by the urban heat island effect.
    35. What does the smart urban design help according to Perrine Hamel?
    A. Helps efficiently reduce carbon emissions.
    B. Promotes changes in people's behavior.
    C. Encourages the decrease in energy consumption.
    D. Brings more convenience to people's lives.
