It is not often that artists surprise us long after they die, but there are some notable exceptions. Think : Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso.
Underneath Pablo Picasso's famous Blue Period piece The Old Guitarist (1903 - 1904) , there is the faint figure of a woman. She was first detected in 1998, when conservators at the Art Institute of Chicago used X-rays and infrared light to peek behind the top layer of paint. She sits with her left arm reaching towards the viewer and her right arm tucked onto her lap --- and curiously, she matches a sketch Picasso sent to a colleague around the same time.
Until now, all that could be detected of the woman was the faintest trace of her outline. Any extra detail - like color and style - was lost. However, by using a neural network trained to distinguish the style of one artist from another or ( in the case of artists like Picasso) of one period from another, researchers at University College London have given her a new life, even if it is not necessarily true to the Picasso original.
The basis for the neural network was a technique developed in 2015 by Leon Gatys at the University of Tubingen, Germany, called neural style transfer. The machine vision technique can identify the style of a painting and transform the style of a painting to match another. It can transform a Michelangelo into the style of Paul Cezanne, for example. The technology has even been applied to videos - so if you want to watch clips of Ice Age in the style of Van Gogh's The Starry Night, you can.
24. What does the underlined word “notable" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Outstanding. B. Difficult. C. Funny. D. Intelligent.
25. What can we know about the painting The Old Guitarist^
A. It was first found in 1903.
B. Its color and style were lost.
C. It is the only one painted at the Blue Period.
D. The woman figure in it couldn't be seen directly.
26. What is the researchers' aim of using the neural network technology?
A. To test its reliability in the field of art.
B. To identify the period or style of the painting.
C. To restore the painting to the Picasso original.
D. To match the painting to another one similar in style.
27. What does the last paragraph talk about?
A. The process of the neural network.
B. The advantage of the neural network.
C. The development of neural style transfer.
D. The function of neural style transfer.

Are you one of the millions of people that start shopping for Halloween before school even starts? Insights from a study stated that more than a third of consumers will start buying Halloween products in September or earlier.
According to the survey, the majority of shoppers planned to purchase Halloween items from discount ,specialty, and department stores. Others take inspiration from an online search starting as early as August in some cases. This is good news for stores who get to reap the profits, though.
Roberta Gleicher, a district manager, said as a customer, she finds it annoying that stores put out decorations in August --- but as a business consultant (顾问),she recommends they do so. “ Stores try to keep customers in there as long as possible because the more time they spend, the more they will shop and buy. Once they, re shopping, they see holiday decorations and get in the holiday spirit,“ Gleicher says. This is true for women, especially, Gleicher noted. Women tend to take their time, look around, and compare price - whereas men buy and get out, she added.
“The store wants the customer to associate buying decorations. They want customers to think, 'Oh yeah, this store has decorations, let's shop there, '” Gleicher says. "And if they do the displays well enough, it will encourage shoppers to make impulse purchases.
Another reason why stores display howling ghouls (食尸鬼)in the summer heat is out of pure competition. Stores don't have a choice because it's almost guaranteed that competitors will get the buck. Once shoppers buy a product, they've bought it --- and don't need to go elsewhere, Gleicher said.
“If more competitors keep pushing it earlier and earlier, it could end up starting in July," Gleicher says. "The longer they can extend the season, the better it is for their sales. ” 28. What can we learn from the survey?
A. Some consumers purchase Halloween items early.
B. The majority of customers prefer shopping online.
C. Customers purchase Halloween products only for discount.
D. A few shoppers buy Halloween items from department stores.
29. Why does Roberta Gleicher recommend stores put out decorations in August?
A. To help customers get relaxed.
B. To compete with other online stores.
C. To attract women to buy more holiday decorations.
D. To get customers in the holiday atmosphere and buy products.
30. Which of the following will Roberta Gleicher most probably agree with?
A. More competitors extend Halloween from August.
B. Stores display decorations early due to competition.
C. Decorations will encourage men to make impulse purchases.
D. Shoppers definitely won't go elsewhere once they buy a product.
31. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. An advertisement. B. A lecture.
C. A text-book. D. A news report.

International demand for black rhinoceros horn has seen the animals killed relentlessly for decades in countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. In 1960 there were an estimated 100,000 left, and by 1995 fewer than 2,500 remained. Conservation efforts have brought the number up to around 5 ,600 today - but the species is still critically endangered, and poaching (偷猎)is among its biggest threats.
Scientists have worked to protect these rare creatures by tracking them with GPS devices strapped to their necks or ankles or implanted in their horns. The resulting data let researchers monitor the rhinos' numbers and when they enter poaching hotspots. But the devices can fail, and drugging the animals to attach them may cause harm.
A recent study describes a new tracking technology that uses smartphones to record rhino footprints. Called the footprint-identification technique ( FIT) , this system includes software that can analyze the animals, movements from a distance to help keep them safe from poachers.
The idea came from working with local trackers in Zimbabwe. These footprint-reading experts can identify individual black rhinos from the shape of their feet and, when visible, the impressions left by cracks in the animals , heel pads (爪垫),which are as distinctive as a human fingerprint. "We probably wouldn't even have looked at the footprints in the first place if we didn't have indigenous trackers, says Sky Alibhai, co — founder of conservation organization WildTrack.
To use the system, scientists gather rhino footprint images with a smartphone application and upload the pictures to a global database. FIT software analysis can then identify the individual animal and determine its age and sex with up to 99 percent accuracy. Researchers can also estimate the number of black rhinos in an area and watch their movements.
“I think this is great for monitoring animals and counting individuals,“ says Ciska Scheijen, a conservation scientist. Scheijen wonders about FIT's performance during the rainy season, when footprints are often indistinct, and if it can track larger herds as opposed to the 35 odd individuals this study monitored.
32. What does the underlined word "them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Homs. B. Rhinos. C. Devices. D. Smartphones.
33. What do we know about FIT?
A. It is a GPS device implanted in rhinos.
B. It has been widely applied in animal protection.
C. It can analyze footprints with a rather high accuracy.
D. It can identify the rhino footprints and human fingerprints.
34. What is Ciska Scheijen's attitude towards FIT?
A. Positive. B. Uncertain. C. Disapproving. D. Objective.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Black rhinos are endangered due to poaching.
B. A new app tracks black rhinos through their footprints.
C. Scientists have invented a new tracking technology FIT.
D. Conservation organizations save endangered black rhinos.

3 Ways to Create Stronger Connections
Technology has changed the way we communicate. We send e-mails, not letters, text messages, not phone calls. We order delivery instead of cooking dinners in our kitchen. All in the name of efficiency (高效).Technology has made it easier to communicate. 36 Still, we have ways to improve the condition. Here come some tips for establishing sincere connections on the job.
Write a letter. Writing handwritten notes to thank people for advice is necessary. 37 Some advice for writing a thank-you letter is to really make it clear to the person that you' re writing to the impact that they have had on your life. Talk about something specific. Like “Thank you for the advice that you gave me. It's because of the advice you gave me that I am now doing x.”
38 A video conference over a phone call would always be highly recommended. That's when you can see the real personality come out. When you're on video, you' re forced to be present. It's almost a forcing mechanism to be in the moment.
Answer questions with honesty. You know how it feels when you go into an elevator and someone says, “How was your weekend?” It could have been the best weekend ever, you could have met the
love of your life, and you would say, “Good, how was yours?” 39 .
Nobody succeeds alone. 40 , the more you' re going to be able to realize your dreams.
You're going to be able to take big risks and know that there's a network of people to cheer you on and to support your efforts.
A. Turn the video on
B. Try to use video as much as possible
C. The more you are willing to take big risks
D. The more you can take time to develop true relationships
E. If you want to connect with people, then you have to open up
F. But it hasn't made it easier to connect with other human beings
G. It just puts that extra effort to show someone that you really care
