During most of the day, youll likely be wearing your swimsuit. When youve finished at the beach or pool area, it is advisable to bring along a shirt or cover as well as shorts to wear. It is not recommended to wear beach clothes when you go out for dimmer --- regardless of the time of day. I'm not someone who has many secrets, because I'm a terrible liar, But there is one huge secret that I kept for years-I failed my driving test. I had never failed a test before, and had never even come close. Driving made me anxious, but my parents told me I had to. They signed me up for driving lessons. I had gotten a perfect score for my written permit exam, but getting behind the wheel was a different story. But when October 30th rolled around, my pride set in. I wanted to be like everyone else at my school, showing off the brand new license they'd gotten. Looking back on that special day, I can't remember if I was nervous. What I do remember is starting the test, pausing at a stop sign after a few seconds, and being asked by the instructor to pull over. I had received an auto-fail since my pause was indeed a pause and not a real stop. I wasn't upset that I was leaving without a license, but I was scared everyone would know that I had failed. So when I got to class, I told everyone I didn't want to take the test on my birthday. One Friday a month later, I went to the test spot again and passed. Later that night I drove for the first time by myself, which brought to me an amazing feeling I've never experienced-but sill, 1 couldn't imagine ever telling anyone the truth. So I didn't. It wasn't until midway through college that I came clean. It turned out plenty of my college friends had failed too! And I gathered enough courage to speak the fact out. Yes, I had also failed. Now I realize failure and imperfection are two things everyone has to experience, without which one couldn't make a true man. 4. What can we learn about Matthew?A. He was afraid of taking exams. B. He relied heavily on his parents. C. He was a slow learner of driving. D. He was bored with telling lies. 5. Why did the instructor ask Matthew to pull over?A. To check his parking skills. B. To put an end to his test. C. To give him a second chance. D. To show him a better way of driving. 6. What made Matthew feel extremely worried after his first attempt?A. Failing to get a driving license. B. Missing his birthday celebration. C. Losing face before his classmates. D. Making his parents disappointed. 7. What did Matthew learn from his own experience?A. Honesty is the best policy. B. Imperfection is another form of perfection. C. Truth stands the test of time. D. Failure is a way to grow up. CTwo recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner's Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked, the slower their mental development. 8. What do we know about the second study?A. The study is about violence and cooperation of children. B. The children tested were divided into groups of four. C. Children's IQs have much to do with physical punishment. D. Children's mental development only relies on their IQs. 12. What's the cause of bioluminescence?A. The sea itself. B. Dinoflagellates. C. The motion of water. D. Glowing marine animals. 13. What can we infer from the second paragraph?A. There is a low concentration of dinoflagellates in bio bays. B. The phenomenon of a glowing sea can be easily seen in open water. C. The sea is glowing because of the sea animals that glow underwater. D. The sea doesn't glow in the daytime since dinoflagellates are invisible by day. 14. Which of the following is TRUE about the bio bay mentioned in the article?A. There are three well-known bio bays in Jamaica. B. Mosquito Bay has been able to stand the effects of climate change. C. Bioluminescence happens more frequently in Halong Bay. D. Bioluminescence can be seen in Luminous Lagoon almost throughout the year. 15. Under the tag #ScienceIRL, you are most likely to seeA. papers that introduce scientific theories through the use of examples in our real lifeB. pictures that show scientific phenomena in our daily livesC. photos that present spectacular natural views and scenic spotsD. guidebooks that recommend mysterious tourist attractions for science enthusiasts 第二节5小题; 每小题2, 满分10根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。A Few Active Listening GuidelinesListening is probably the most important element of interpersonal communication.
