It was a beautiful Southern California morning with a blue sky, a cool breeze and warm sunlight. I walked through the parking lot of the shopping centre, thinking of my appointment with the cake at the local bakery. As I wandered in front of the grocery store next to the bakeshop, I noticed a young woman standing at the store entrance with bags of groceries neatly piled. As is my practice with strangers, I made eye contact with her and said with a smile, “Hello, there! And how are you today?”
She smiled back and responded with a Southern accent. I had only taken a few steps past her when I heard her say, “Thank you for seeing me!”
Still smiling, I turned around and walked over to her. For the next twenty minutes, I listened attentively to Dominique sharing her story. She had grown up in Louisiana. Three years ago, she moved to California alone, where without contacts or the promise of employment, she struggled to create a life of purpose and fulfillment. She spoke with an easy Southern charm and a smile with joy.
A friend of hers came to pick her up. I helped her load the groceries into the back seat of the car. She thanked me and opened the front passenger-side door. "My daddy used to say that a person will remember how you made them feel long after they've forgotten what you said. I know I'll remember this for a long time.” I smiled, knowing I would as well.
One of my favorite quotes is from Mother Teresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” I have found that the benefit of doing these small things not only helps me maintain a positive outlook on life but may even sow a few seeds of hope for someone else.

7. What can we learn from the story?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B. The more you sweat, the luckier you get
C. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.
D. It doesn't take much to brighten others' life.

A great amount of dark, sticky tar(焦油)was reported along Israel's coast last week. An off-shore oil tanker is believed to have leaked out.
The floating oil can form tar balls as it is pushed by wind and waves on the ocean's surface. After a violent storm, the tar balls were seen ashore. Israel has about 190 kilometers beaches. The tar has already had a big effect on the local wildlife. Volunteers were working quickly to rescue sea birds, turtles and fish. Some animals were covered in oil or tar. Others had swallowed it. The body of a young whale was found washed up on shore. The whale appeared to have died after swallowing a black oily liquid.
The government has asked people to avoid going to the beach, since tar exposure can make people sick and do harm to the skin. A number of volunteers had to be taken to the hospital after breathing in the air polluted by chemicals from the tar.
Experts from Israel and countries in Europe are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. The leak is believed to have taken place about a week ago, when there were strong storms in the area. Israel believed that a ship leaked tens or even hundreds of tons of oil in the Mediterranean. Experts are working together to review satellite images of ships that passed through the area, and they have a list of about 10 ships that are the most likely ones to leak out.
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority warned that the “consequences will be seen for years to come”. Israeli environment minister Gila Gamliel said on Saturday that there is no more floating oil visible off Israel's coast, “which is a very animative condition”. However, the ministry warned that large waves are forecast this week. The waves could carry the sticky tar from beach to beach, which could make clean-up efforts more difficult.
8. What brought the tar balls to the shore?
A. An oil ship. B. A strong storm.
C. The sea animals. D. The Floating oil.
9. What can be inferred about the oil tanker leak?
A. Israel has found out the cause of the leak.
B. Volunteers have tried hard to stop the leak.
C. When the leak occurred hasn't been figured out.
D. Which ship is responsible for the leak is unclear.
10. What does the underlined word “animative” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Challenging. B. Encouraging. C. Rare. D. Natural.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Health. B. Science. C. Environment. D. Trade.
D
More Americans say they are on a special diet compared with Americans about 10 years ago. The increased dieting comes at a time when obesity levels continue to rise. 17 percent of Americans said they were on a diet in 2017 — up from 14 percent about 10 years earlier. Over the same period, obesity levels increased in the U.S. to 42 percent — up from 34 percent.
About half of American adults have diet-related health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. Overall, more women reported being on a diet than men. The heavier and more educated people were, the more likely they were to report being on a special diet.
Between 2007 and 2017 diets described as “weight loss or low calorie” grew in popularity. Low-carbohydrate diets became more popular, while low-fat and low-cholesterol diets became less popular.
The findings were part of an ongoing national survey. People who took part in the survey were asked the following question: “Are you currently on any kind of diet, either to lose weight or for some other health-related reasons?”
Becky Ramsing is a dietician and program officer at Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. Ramsing said that people made very different kinds of choices in the hopes of losing weight. In some cases, she said people might not understand why the choices they made could not help them lose weight. “They won't eat bread, but then they' eat a lot of other things that are higher in calories,” she said.
Ramsing added that many American diet trends banned some foods. But to make lasting changes, she said people should consider their eating overall. “That will help them deal with another problem of diets,” she noted. “Diets are hard to continue doing over time.”
12. What can we learn about according to Paragraph 1?
A. The popularity of dieting in America. B. The sharp rise in obesity worldwide.
C. The potential benefits of a special diet. D. Traditional eating habits of Americans.
13. Why did people fail to lose weight by dieting according to Ramsing?
A. They ignored experts’ advice on nutrition. B. They were misled into making wrong choices.
C. They forgot their initial goals of losing weight. D. They failed to have a healthy and balanced diet.
14. What does Ramsing think of sticking to a long-term diet?
A. Wrong. B. Simple. C. Difficult. D. Effective.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Americans’ Myths About Special Dieting.
B. A Serious Obesity 'Trend in the United States.
C. More Americans on a Special Diet for Health Reasons.
D. Americans’ Diet-related Health Problems about Obesity.
