A video of a family being saved from their burning home went viral on TikTok as it showed a neighbor running over and banging(猛敲)on the front door to wake up those inside.
Nicole Salgado, who lived in Avondale with her husband David Salgado and their four children, posted the clip of the ring doorbell camera film to her TikTok page to show just how they had been woken up on the first day of the new year.
“It was about 7:30 in the morning. We were all asleep because it was New Year's Eve the night before. We all stayed up and did the countdown, so we were all still sleeping and we got woken up by banging on the door. The doorbell was going off,” she said. “We just heard banging, banging, banging, so my husband and I shot up out of bed and we looked at each other and we were like ‘What's going on? Who could that be?’”
There was little time to even process the possibility of what was happening so that instead she immediately ran to grab her kids, while David went to the front door. "He opened the door and I heard the neighbor, Carol, say, ‘Get out. Your house is on fire. Get out,’’ she explained. That moment, recorded by the family's doorbell system, was what so many responded to on TikTok, calling Carol the family's "guardian angel" and referring to her as a hero as she offered the Salgado family to take shelter in her home.
"The biggest thing I take from this story is just be kind to your neighbors. Before we'd wave hi, bye. Just a friendly neighbor interaction. Now, it'1l be completely different," Nicole says. "We' re just so grateful to her. Now, she's gonna be family. It's so refreshing to see that there are people out there that care about other people."
24. What can we learn about the popular video in the text?

They come suddenly, without warning, and the question in your mind “Why now?” melts into the depressing realization that this could mean the end of your life. Until now.
A new machine-learning system of artificial intelligence(AI)can successfully predict the risk of cardiac arrest(心脏骤停)using timing and weather data, according to a new study published in the journal Heart.
The study found that the out-of-hospital risk of cardiac arrest was highest on Sundays, Mondays, during sharp drops in temperature during or between days, and on public holidays. The new findings could serve as an early warning system, lowering the risk of deadly episodes and raising survival chances, in addition to improving emergency medical services' ability to prepare for serious situations. This is significant because out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are common globally, and are generally linked to low survival rates.
To deepen the research, the scientists evaluated the capacity of machine learning to anticipate daily out-of-hospital cardiac arrests via timing, as in the year, season, day of the week, hour of day, and daily weather, like snowfall, temperature, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure readings. Between 2005 and 2013,1,299,784 cases happened, and machine learning was implemented for 525,374 cases using timing data, weather, or both for a training dataset. These results were then contrasted with 135,678 cases that happened between 2014 and 2015, to examine the model's capacity for accuracy for anticipating the statistical number of daily cardiac arrests in other years.
"This predictive model may be useful for preventing out of hospital cardiac arrest," said the researchers. However, it's critically important to note that this study does not promise a way to predict when people will really die from cardiac arrest. As a leading cause of death, the new machine learning AI merely predicts when the risk of having a heart attack is high.
28. What's paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The seriousness of cardiac arrests. B. The power of artificial intelligence.
C. The great significance of the findings. D. The time of cardiac arrests' occurrence.
29. What does the underlined word "implemented" mean in paragraph 4?
A. Created. B. Applied. C. Suspended. D. Updated.
30. What's the author's attitude to the warning system?
A. Critical. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To state the potential risks of heart attacks.
B. To stress the importance of conducting researches.
C. To introduce a breakthrough of a disease prediction.
D. To point out the shortcomings of modern technology.
D
From growing cereals(谷物)thousands of years ago to the attractive and decorative gardens of today, the nature of gardens has changed with numerous cultural and historic events over time.
Recently, a group of 32 Michigan Master Gardeners and Michigan State University employees toured some of the most famous gardens in the countries of France and Malta on a study trip, observing the progress of gardening and how culture and historical events shaped garden design.
For example, the purpose of the garden at the Chateau of Versailles in Paris, France, was primarily to demonstrate the wealth of the royalty at the time as well as technological innovation. The Chateau was first built just as a hunting house by Louis XIII in 1623. However, Louis XIV expanded Versailles to create a royal residence where the royal court could gather during the mid-1600s. The garden was designed by the famous landscape architect, Andre Le Notre during 1660 to 1680.
Giverny, a small village only 75 miles from the northwest coast of France on the English Channel, was a haven(乐土)for impressionist artists during the late 1800s. It was removed from the city of Paris and was most notably home to Claude Monet and his garden. Monet developed the gardens over the course of his career to be his outdoor studio. For him, his garden was a passion and the romantic landscape was one to be painted over and over from a new angle or with different lighting.
During World War I and World War II, people in the United States and around the world planted "Victory Gardens". These vegetable, fruit and herb gardens provided private citizens with nutrition during times of war and helped free up additional resources for the soldiers. These gardens demonstrated their love for the country and provided the owners with a sense of achievement in uncertain times.
Throughout time, gardens not only reflect the individual owner or creator, but are also a photograph of the historical events and culture of the time. What will your garden say about you?
32. What was the goal of constructing the Chateau of Versailles?
A. To show royal power. B. To serve as a court.
C. To shelter local hunters. D. To honor an architect.
33. Why is Giverny so appealing to impressionist artists?
A. It is far away from big cities. B. It is a source of inspiration.
C. It has fully-equipped studios. D. It has good lighting facilities.
34. What is the hidden value of "Victory Gardens"?
A. An appeal for a balanced diet. B. A demonstration of love for peace.
C. An exhibition of food variety. D. A symbol of individual contributions.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Most Memorable Garden Architects in History.
B. Latest Research on Hidden Benefits of Gardens.
C. Gardens as a Reflection of History and Culture.
D. Invaluable Wisdom in Construction of Gardens.

As a student, you may not know the right way to approach the teacher or even what to say. 36 However, if you use the following strategies, you can ask a teacher for help more easily.
37 When possible, try to figure out the solution to your problem on your own before you ask your teacher for help. Teachers like it when students try to solve problems before asking for help. It shows independence.
Be brave. 38 The truth is, not asking for help is usually worse because you don't get the help you need. If you've tried to solve problems but still need help, then be brave and ask your teacher. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that asking your teacher for help is a mature thing to do. Say to yourself, "Asking for help means I'm mature. 39 "
You can also remind yourself, "There's probably someone else who has the same question, but is afraid to ask. So I'll be brave and ask."
Get your teacher's attention the right way. Yelling "I need help" or just blurting out(脱口而出)your question while your teacher is talking is not the best way to get their attention. Your teacher has probably let you know how you should get their attention when you need help. Raise your hand or use the signal your teacher taught you for getting their attention. Sometimes you may need to approach your teacher to get their attention. 40
Tell your teacher what you need help with. Teachers know a lot of things, and sometimes it seems that they can read your mind. You just need to let them know exactly what you need help with.
A. Listen to the response carefully.
B. Try to solve the problem by yourself first.
C. Ask more questions if you have problems.
D. It's what I should do when I don't understand.
E. Anyway, politely say "Excuse me" when doing so.
F. It can sometimes be difficult to ask a teacher for help.
G. People often won't ask for help because they are afraid they will look stupid.

True to Myself
When I was six years old,I developed a type of cancer called leukemia(白血病). I spent most of my days at the Chicago Children's Hospital. Just when I was starting middle school,my cancer came back. With hope, challenge and will,I went through two stages of treatment and survived.
School was the last thing on my mind. I couldn't walk very well,so I had to use crutches(拐杖). Besides, the medicine I had to take made me weak and my hair fall out. Losing hair was not fun, especially for a girl. Luckily, the teachers were very kind and did their best to help students understand my cancer.
Middle school was even harder to deal with because you have to switch classrooms for every subject. Since I couldn't walk well, my teachers let me leave class a few minutes before the bell rang. This gave me enough time to get to and from my next class without all the other kids rushing through the hallways.
On one particular day when I felt super weak to make it to my next class, I rested for a minute against a wall while leaning on my crutches. Suddenly the bell rang, the classroom doors swung open, the hallways filled up with students trying to get to their next class. I took a deep breath and tried again. I didn't make it very far. Just then, the final bell rang and all the students in the hallways dashed into their classrooms, leaving the hallways empty except for me. Suddenly, a boy from nowhere rushing to the classroom stamped on my crutch without noticing it so I lost my balance. I fell flat on my face. I tried to find enough energy to get up. After several fruitless attempts, I felt embarrassed, in pain, and most of all, defeated. At that very moment I hated everything about what was happening to me: My health,my weakness. I never wanted to go back to school again.

第二节
The next morning I had to make a choice. I could stay home and feel sorry for myself or I could go to school and accomplish what I had set out to do. I closed my eyes and thought a while. I thought about the children I had met at the hospital who were also sick. I even thought about the kids I went to school with who had other types of problems. Right then and there I opened my eyes, sat up, and decided tomorrow was a new day and no matter how the day played out, I was going to make it.
To my surprise, that school day seemed to go smoother than usual. I had regained a little bit of confidence, enough to keep trying my best and to not let other's behavior or words bother me. I even made a new friend that month. Eventually I got healthier and my cancer went away. Later, I even became the fastest runner in my class! I didn't choose my cancer or disabilities, but I conquered them. I stayed true to myself and that is what matters.
