AWhen film was first invented in the late 1800s and early 1900s, moviegoers could actually see images of far-away places, like China, and that fueled interest in the area. Throughout history, many Chinese Americans are devoted in this area. Now, the backroom of the Formosa Cafe looks like a museum that honors the works of Chinese Americans and their contributions to Hollywood.Chinese stereotypes(刻板印象)Stereotypes of the Chinese in America were strengthened by the otherness of theUS and China towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s.There was an idea that the Chinese was the “Yellow Peril”, who you couldn’t trust. And that resulted in the character called Fu Manchu. Fu Manchu was an evil character who wanted to destroy the western world. He appeared in movies and in a television series. In 1926, Charlie Chan, a Chinese investigator from Hawaii, appeared for the first time in a movie. This created a different, yet still problematic Asian stereotype.“Yellow face” actorsCharlie Chan and Fu Manchu may have been Chinese characters, but the actors were usually white men made up to look like Asians. Actors Sidney Toler, Roland Winters and Ross Martin all played Charlie Chan. Yellow face meant they actually yellowed up their skin. White actors just played the lead characters in The Good Earth, a 1937 film about Chinese farmers. Asian actors had parts in the film, but they needed bankable actors, however, there were no Asian American bankable actors.China factorsOver the years, Asian and Chinese Americans did find work in Hollywood, and a few earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hollywood is also changing the way it presents the Chinese culture. As the biggest market for movies outside the US, Hollywood has been making films that will not offend moviegoers in China or the country’s government. The industry has been careful not to show Chinese as evil. Co-productions between Hollywood and Chinese companies put Chinese charactersand China in a favorable or satisfactory way.1.Why is the backroom of the Formosa Cafe mentioned?A.To show appreciation for Chinese American filmmakers.B.To display the richness of Chinese American films.C.To attract more customers to enjoy coffee in the Formosa Cafe.D.To recommend a place to moviegoers to learn Chinese American films.2.What can be known about Charlie Chan?A.He could be found in a TV series.B.He was an actor bearing evil reputation.C.He represented an investigator from Hawaii.D.He wasn’t much appreciated by moviegoers then.3.What can be concluded about Chinese American films?A.Chinese actors were preferred in casting Chinese roles.B.They focused on evil Chinese eager to ruin America.C.China factors are positively viewed in them.D.They have been introducing Chinese stereotypes.BWalter Carr and his mother just moved from New Orleans, Louisiana to Birmingham, Alabama after losing their home in Hurricane Katrina.Walter Carr, a college student in Alabama, walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job. Walter Carr’s car broke down the night before starting a new job at Bellhops, a furniture moving company. Carr was unable to find a ride. He left at midnight so that he could make it to the customer’s house by 8:00 am the next morning.Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4:00 am and they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am. The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey.Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest and started working. Lamey thought he worked in a down-to-earth way. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen.Lamey later wrote this on Facebook: “I just can’t tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is kind and cheerful and he has big dreams! He is hardworking and tough.” She then started a GoFundMe page to help Walter with money to get his car fixed. When the CEO of Bellhops, Luke Marklin, learned of Carr’s story, he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to give Walter his own Ford Escape.Walter Carr’s story touched many others around the United States. Within a few days, people gave over $ 73, 000 to his GoFundMe page. Carr has decided to give a part of the donations to the Birmingham Education Foundation. Trees suck enormous amounts of carbon dioxide out of the air and fix the carbon in their wood and the soil. A recent study found that planting new trees over an area the size of the US could suck away two thirds of all the carbon dioxide discharge that humans have pumped into the atmosphere.“Without animals, it is harder for forests to absorb carbon, as tree species (种类) important for protecting the climate could be lost without animals”, Susanne Winter, a program director said at the WWF.In Africa, many of the tree species that absorb the most carbon rely on large birds and primates (灵长类动物) to eat their fruits and spread their large seeds, according to the report. Without them, those trees would have difficulty reproducing and forests would lose their best carbon-storing trees.“Forests are our greatest natural ally in the fight against global warming, ”Winter said.“If we want to hold back the worldwide decline in biodiversity and prevent the climate crisis, we need to protect the forests and the species living there.”Forests also filter (过滤) water—as water makes its way to lakes or groundwater reserves, the roots and soil separate it from deposits and pollution that it collects along the way. What’ s more, forests regulate the global water cycle, since trees’ leaves, branches, and roots store or send out water vapor.Climate models show that forest-cutting down in Central Africa could lead to a 15% drop in rainfall in the US Midwest, and Amazon deforestation (森林滥伐) could cut Texas rainfall by 25%.Humans also get food, wood, and medicine from the abundance of plants and animals in forests. Worldwide, 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livings, according to the United Nations. About 300 million people live in forests, according to the WWF.8.What’s the purpose of Paragraph 3?A.To tell where the large seeds go.B.To show the tree species in Africa.C.To draw readers’ attention to Africa.D.To support Susanne Winter’s opinion.9.What does the underlined word“ally” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Winner. B.Competitor.C.Partner. D.Victim.10.How do forests change the climate according to the passage?A.By affecting air and water.B.By feeding birds and animals.C.By providing life necessities.D.By increasing the variety of trees.11.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Water should be filtered.B.The more forests, the more rain.C.Forests should be globally protected.D.Half of the carbon dioxide is sucked away by trees.DAs a kid, Joanna Buckley wasn’t interested in science—until she had a chance to try it. That happened when she got a chemistry set for Christmas.“Over the course of a few weeks, I’d completed every experiment. But in the process, I polluted my parents’ dining room carpet and burnt the kitchen worktop with the spirit burner,” she says. Now science is Buckley’s job. She works in the chemistry department at the University of Sheffield in England. “I realize, first-hand, how important it is to have something or someone to show you why science is so great,” she says. Now the good news is that citizen science appears.Citizen science takes the fun of experimenting a step further than Buckley’s at-home chemistry kit. That’s because these experiments are real, looking for novel answers.“Compared with a one-off experiment, what’s cool about citizen science is that students get that this has a purpose,” Prunuske says. “Students want to do a good job, because they know scientists are going to use the new data in their own research.”Long agrees. “Kids like that it’s real. And they like that it’s important, that it matters.” Citizen-science projects have made big discoveries. One found a previously unknown galaxy cluster(星系团). Another project helped assess how much damage a big earthquake had caused in Japan. And one of the first citizen-science projects helped scientists learn where butterflies go every winter. Some adults worry about teens losing interest in science. That’s one reason they hope that fun, exciting citizen-science projects can help them keep in touch, Long says. And she has some evidence that it’s working, “Last year, we did have a couple of students say, ‘I really think I want to be a scientist now.’”12.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?A.To support trials can make teens interested in science.B.To prove failure is the mother of success in science.C.To state Buckley has a talent for science.D.To praise Buckley for her strong will.13.Why is citizen science more fun?A.It carries out experiments frequently.B.It must carry out experiments in groups.C.It needs to seek for new solutions.D.It demands to handle complex problems.14.What can we know from what Prunuske said?A.She participated in the experiment.B.She took pride in what students took up.C.Citizen science is popular with students.D.Scientists are willing to employ students.15.What is Long’s attitude towards citizen science?A.Concerned. B.Supportive.C.Doubtful.     D.Unclear.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。You’ve been focusing on your application for a long time.16. .As you look forward to the future, you start to think about your new life. The university experience starts with orientation week (迎新周). One day after dinner, Susan’s mother sat on the seat, announcing to the children the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Susan reflected carefully and seriously on what her mother had said. She resolved that she would keep in mind and follow the rule. One Saturday afternoon, she went to farmer Jason’s inn (小旅馆) to get the pay for her mother’s washing for the guests there, which amounted to five dollars. She found Jason in the yard, who, as all the villagers knew, was selfish and mean. His eyes clouded with anger, as he had just finished a quarrel with one of his guests. He held in his hand an open wallet, full of bills. He barely noticed Susan until she made her request for the money. Instead of shouting at her, as usual, for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a bank note.Feeling relieved for escaping from Jason so easily, Susan hurried out of the inn. When carefully putting the money into her pocket, she discovered that Jason had given her two bills instead of one, and her first reaction was joy at the unexpected prize. She looked around and there was nobody nearby to share her discovery. “It is mine. All mine.” she said to herself. “I will buy mum a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday School with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for brother Tom too.”Just at that moment, she realized that Jason must have given the extra money to her by mistake, and therefore she had no right to own it. But a voice of temptation (诱惑) whispered, “He gave it, and you can keep it. He will never know, even if it is a mistake. ”注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。Paragraph 1: As Susan hurried home, this conflict went on in her mind.                         Paragraph 2: Susan’s face became red with embarrassment and annoyance.
