As the world holds its breath, waiting to see if the coronavirus is going to be defeated or if we will experience a second wave, many of us are looking to the future and find how our lives have changed. The virus has caused many people to work from home. If companies decide to continue allowing this, it will ease the burden on public transport. Many train and subway systems in major cities were struggling with the number of daily passengers. With restrictions and social distancing in place on many modes of transport, people have been shifting towards cycling as an alternative way to get around. During June 2020, the UK saw cycling levels rise by 300%. This was pushed by a government policy that allowed people to buy a bike tax free, allowing savings from 25% up to 39% depending on the cost of the bike. The coronavirus has also seen significant impact on jobs, with over 650,000 people in the UK having lost their roles during lockdown, mainly in the retail (零) and service section. However, other sections such as technology were much better as people try to find technical solutions to lockdown, such as video calling. Although it has been a shock, the world has adapted quickly to coronavirus, and many are hoping that these changes are here to stay, highlighting the fact that traditional ways of living and working should remain in the past.

A second-grade education has not stopped garbage collector Jose from bringing the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian children.
Jose started rescuing books from the trash almost 20 years ago, when he was driving a garbage truck at night through the country’s wealthier neighborhoods. The rejected reading material slowly piled up, and now the ground floor of his small house is a temporary community library piled from floor to ceiling with some 20, 000 books, ranging from chemistry textbooks to children’s classics.
He says books are luxuries for boys and girls in low-income neighborhoods such as his, with new reading material at bookstores too expensive. There are 19 public libraries in Bogota, but they tend to be located far away from poorer areas. “Books are our salvation and that is what Colombia needs,” says Jose.
The 53-year-old Jose has a love of reading he attributes(归因于) to his mother, who always read to him even though she was too poor to keep him in school. “She used to read me stories every night,” said Jose, “To me, books are the greatest invention and the best thing that can happen to a human being.”
Jose still searches through the rubbish for additions to his library though he is very famous in Columbia. Jose is also a greedy reader of works by famous authors. He says he doesn’t reject technology that allows books to be read digitally, but says he prefers to read the printed word on paper. “There’s nothing more beautiful than having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car,” he says.
    24. How did Jose start his library?
    A. By receiving textbooks from kids.
    B. By collecting rejected books from garbage.
    C. By rescuing used books from public libraries.
    D. By getting donated books from local communities.
    25. What is the barrier to public libraries in Bogota for kids in poorer areas?
    A. High cost. B. Limited access. C. Bad location. D. Long distance.
    26. Why did Jose quit school?
    A. He hoped to found a library for poor kids.
    B. He loved to stay at home studying alone.
    C. His family couldn’t afford his tuition fees.
    D. His mother taught him at home every night.
    27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Jose gains fame for collecting trash.
    B. Jose has become a well-known author.
    C. Jose takes an objective attitude to digital books.
    D. Jose prefers to read pocket books inside his car.
B 25. D 26. C 27. C
根据第二段中的“Jose started rescuing books from the trash almost 20 years ago, (Jose大约20年前开始从垃圾堆里捡书)”和“The rejected reading material slowly piled up, and now the ground floor of his small house is a temporary community library...(废弃的阅读材料慢慢堆积起来,现在他的小房成为了一个临时的社区图书馆)”可知,Jose20年前就开始从垃圾堆中收集书本,并且这些废弃的阅读材料慢慢在他的小房子里堆起来成为了社区的一个临时图书馆,由此可知,Jose是通过从垃圾堆收集废弃的书本来建立这个图书馆的,故选B。
根据第三段中的“There are 19 public libraries in Bogota, but they tend to be located far away from poorer areas(在Bogota有19个公共图书馆,但它们往往位于远离贫困地区的地方。)”
根据第四段中的“The 53-year-old Jose has a love of reading he attributes(归因于) to his mother, who always read to him even though she was too poor to keep him in school.(53岁的Jose热爱阅读,他把这归功于他的母亲,尽管她太穷了,不能让他上学,但是母亲总是给他读书。)”
根据最后一段中的“He says he doesn’t reject technology that allows books to be read digitally, but says he prefers to read the printed word on paper(他说他并不排斥数字阅读技术,但他更喜欢纸质书。)”
    C
A sharp rise in US pedestrian(行人) deaths has been partly blamed on people using their smartphones while driving or crossing the road. A recent report estimates that there were 6, 000 pedestrian deaths in 2016, the highest number in more than 20 years. In the last six years, fatalities(死亡数) have grown at four times the rate of overall traffic deaths.
The report say a number of factors are to blame, including mobile use. “A more recent factor contributing to the increase in pedestrian fatalities may be the growing use of smartphones by all road users, which can be a significant source of distraction for both drivers and pedestrians,” the report stated. Other factors include increased driving and more walking for exercise and environmental reasons. Alcohol is also blamed.
The report is based on data from all states for the first six months of 2016. The UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said it also saw mobile phones as dangerously distracting.
“More and more teenagers and young adults are being injured as a result of distraction, as a result of crossing roads while using their phone. This can be as a result of having a conversation, listening to music, texting or using the net,” said road safety manager Nick Lloyd.
Some cities around the world are taking measures to counter the issue of smartphone distraction. In the Bavarian town, the station has fitted red and green lights in the ground to warn people who stubbornly look at their smartphone. Officials in the Dutch town ran trials in February of traffic lights that project a red or green lighting strip across the pavements to alert smartphone zombies who were glued to their mobiles as they cross the road. Social media, games and music are major distractions in traffic. Dutch road safety group VVN said that the idea rewarded bad behavior.
    28. What is the purpose of the report?
    A. To tell the readers a sharp rise in traffic deaths.
    B. To state the reasons for the increase in pedestrian fatalities.
    C. To remind people of the negative effects of using smartphones.
    D. To appeal to the public not to use their smartphones on the road.
    29. What is the major cause of pedestrian distraction?
    A. Traffic flows. B. Exercise on the roads.
    C. Smartphone use. D. Alcohol addiction.
    30. Which can replace the underlined word “counter” in Paragraph 5?
    A. Prevent. B. Calculate. C. Expose. D. Clarify.
    31. What is the VVN’s attitude towards to trials in the Bavarian town?
    A. Flexible. B. Conservative. C. Approving. D. Critical.
B 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据第二段中的“The report says a number of factors are to blame, including mobile use.(报告称,许多因素都是罪魁祸首,包括移动设备的使用。)”
根据第三段“More and more older teenagers and young adults are being injured as a result of distraction, as a result of crossing roads while using their phones.(越来越多的年纪较大的青少年和年轻人因为分心而受伤,因为在过马路时使用手机。)”
根据画线单词所在句子下文“In the Bavarian town, the station has fitted red and green lights in the ground to warn people who stubbornly look at their smartphone. ;“Officials in the Dutch town ran trials in February of traffic lights that project a red or green lighting strip across the pavements to alert smartphone zombies who were glued to their mobiles as they cross the road. 可知,一些城市在采取措施来解决手机分散注意力问题,比如有些地方安装了红绿灯,有些地方做测试,结合划线单词所在句子“Some cities around the world are taking measures to counter the issue of smartphone distraction.(世界各地的一些城市正在采取措施...... 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Dutch road safety group VVN said that the idea rewarded bad behavior.(荷兰道路安全组织VVN表示,这一想法奖励了不良行为。)”和“Social media, games and music are major distractions in traffic.(社交媒体、游戏和音乐是交通中主要的干扰。)”

The oceans are warming faster than previously estimated, setting a new temperature record in 2018 in a trend that is damaging marine life, scientists said on Thursday. New measurements showed more warming since 1971 than 2013, they said.
And observational records of ocean heat content show that ocean warming is accelerating. Man-made greenhouse gas emissions are warming the atmosphere and a large part of the heat gets absorbed by the oceans. That in turn is forcing fish to flee to cooler waters. “Global warming is here, and has major consequences already. There is no doubt, none!” the authors wrote in a statement.
Data due for publication next week will show “20l8 was the warmest year on record for the global ocean, surpassing 2017, ” said lead author Lijing Cheng. He said that records for ocean warming had been broken almost yearly since 2000. Overall, temperatures in the ocean down to 2,000 meters rose about 0.1℃ from 1971 to 2010, he said. The 2013 U. N. assessment estimated slower rates of heat uptake but did not give a single comparable number. A separate study on Monday said 2018 was the fourth warmest year for global surface temperatures in records dating back to the 19th century.
Ocean temperatures are less influenced by year-to-year variations in the weather. It can take more than 1,000 years for deep ocean temperatures to adjust to changes at the surface. The deep ocean reflects the climate of the deep and uncertain past. Among effects, extra warmth can reduce oxygen in the oceans and damages coral reefs that are nurseries for fish, the scientists said. Warmer seas release more moisture that can stoke more powerful storms. Warmer ocean water also raises sea levels by melting ice, including around the edges of Antarctica and Greenland.
    32. What forces fish to flee to cooler water?
    A. Greenhouse gas. B. Ocean warming.
    C. High record temperature. D. Man’s massive killing.

    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Oceans Are Warming Faster than Expected
    B. Ocean Warming Is Damaging Marine Life
    C. Climate Change Raises Ocean Temperature
    D. Global Warming Causes Extreme Weather
B 33. C 34. C 35. A
根据文章第二段“Man-made greenhouse gas emissions are warming the atmosphere and a large part of the heat gets absorbed by the oceans. That in turn is forcing fish to flee to cooler waters.(人为排放的温室气体正在使大气变暖,大部分热量被海洋吸收。
根据第三段“He said that records for ocean warming had been broken almost yearly since 2000.(他说,自2000年以来,海洋变暖的记录几乎每年都被打破。)”
根据第四段“Among effects, extra warmth can reduce oxygen in the oceans and damages coral reefs that are nurseries for fish, the scientists said. Warmer seas release more moisture that can stoke more powerful storms. Warmer ocean water also raises sea levels by melting ice, including around the edges of Antarctica and Greenland.(科学家们说,额外的温暖会减少海洋中的氧气,破坏作为鱼类苗圃的珊瑚礁。
根据第一段“The oceans are warming faster than previously estimated, setting a new temperature record in 2018 in a trend that is damaging marine life, scientists said on Thursday. 故选A。
Honesty and humility best predictors of job performances
A latest study finds that ratings of honesty and humility among employees may predict how their bosses view job performance. ____36____.
Over a period of a year and a half, Dr. Wade, a professor Baylor University, and his team conducted online surveys of about 270 employees from 25 companies in the health care field. ____37____ These results were then compared to performance reviews completed by the employees’ inspectors, who rated each worker according to 35 job skills. ____38____.
Employees who self-reported high levels of honesty and humility consistently received better job performance reviews by their supervisors.
Wade acknowledges that honesty and humility will not predict job performance in every field, especially for jobs where a high level of self-promotion is necessary, such as sales roles or entertainers. He said, however, that in many workplaces, employees who show honesty and humility will be liked by their colleagues. ____39____ They probably get along with their inspectors and co-workers, and this is driving some of the better performance ratings.
____40____ Many humble people may not self-report that they are humble, Wade said, while narcissists(自我陶醉者) might fake humility to make themselves more appealing. While he admits his study did not have a control for such behavior, previous studies of peer ratings of humility have shown that self-reports usually connect with those of colleagues. Honesty and humility are socially desirable qualities, there's really no way around that.
    A. Those invited are honest and humble.
    B. Honesty and humility in jobs are essential.
    C. Partly difficult to measure, humility is alternative.
    D. They are trustworthy, down-to-earth, and easy to relate to.
    E. Most worked in jobs that involved one-to-one care of challenging clients.
    F. As honesty and humility increase, inspector ratings of job performance increase.
    G. Participants in 20 states were asked to self-report on their own character qualities.
F 37. G 38. E 39. D 40. C
根据上一句“A latest study finds that ratings of honesty and humility among employees may predict how their bosses view job performance.( 一项最新研究发现,员工的诚实度和谦逊度可能会预测老板对工作表现的看法。)”
    2. 根据上文“Over a period of a year and a half, Dr. Wade, a professor Baylor University, and his team conducted online surveys of about 270 employees from 25 companies in the health care field.(在一年半的时间里,Baylor大学教授Wade博士和他的团队对医疗保健领域25家公司的270名员工进行了网上调查。)” Wade和他的同事进行了网上调查,后文“These results were then compared to performance reviews completed by the employees’ inspectors, who rated each worker according to 35 job skills.( 然后将这些结果与员工检查员完成的绩效评估进行比较,检查员是根据35项工作技能对每个员工进行评估的。)”是对调查过程的具体描述,由此可知,G项“Participants in 20 states were asked to self-report on their own character qualities.(20个州的参加者被要求报告他们的性格特点)”也是对调查过程的描述,符合语境,其中“Participants”代指上文提到的“about 270 employees from 25 companies”,故选G。
    3. 根据上文“These results were then compared to performance reviews completed by the employees’ inspectors, who rated each worker according to 35 job skills.( 然后将这些结果与员工检查员完成的绩效评估进行比较,检查员根据35项工作技能对每个员工进行评估。)” E选项“Most worked in jobs that involved one-to-one care of challenging clients.(大多数人从事的工作涉及对具有挑战性的客户进行一对一的护理)”补充说明这些参与者的工作情况,符合语境,故选E。
    4. 根据上文“He said, however, that in many workplaces, employees who show honesty and humility will be liked by their colleagues.( 然而,他说,在许多工作场所,表现出诚实和谦逊的员工会受到同事的喜爱。) D项“They are trustworthy, down-to-earth, and easy to relate to.(他们值得信赖,脚踏实地,共情能力强。)”
    5. 根据下文“Many humble people may not self-report that they are humble, Wade said, while narcissists(自我陶醉者) might fake humility to make themselves more appealing. C“Partly difficult to measure, humility is alternative.(在一定程度上谦逊难以衡量,因为谦逊是具有选择性的。)”

故填were added。
故填Therefore或者Thus。
由空格前most和前面的largest可知,“the largest”和“most_______”同为形容词最高级的表达,所以空处应用形容词famous,the most famous意为“最有名的”。
故填who。
故填where。
故填has become。

I heard her sing when I opened the door. And I saw my crippled(跛腿的) grandmother was dancing. I was absolutely shocked. Her legs were crippled as long as I could remember. She once was the pet of the dancing world. And then she had her accident and it was all over. I read that in an old newspaper. She turned around and saw me. Grandmother sighed and turned towards the kitchen. I followed her and saw she was walking fine. So, out of curiosity, I asked her “what’s going on?”
Oh Dear, let me share a little story of mine. “When your grandfather went to war, I was so afraid of losing him, the only way I could stay sane was to dance. And I became very good. Critics praised me, the public loved me, but all I could feel was the ache in my heart, not knowing whether the love of my life would ever return. Then I went home and reread his letters until I fell asleep. He always ended his letters with‘You are my joy. I love you with my life’ and after that he wrote his name. And then one day a letter came. There were only three sentences: ‘I have lost my leg. I give you back your freedom. It is best you forget about me.’”
“I made my decision there and then. I bought myself a cane and start pretending to be crippled. I told a reporter I had a car accident, and couldn’t dance again. Then I went to see your grandfather.” I told him “you’re not the only one who lost a leg; I am not going to let you feel sorry for yourself. There is a whole life waiting for us out there! I don’t intend to be sorry for myself, so youd better snap out of it too.” Grandmother giggled and continued. “I limped toward him and showed him two engagement rings. ‘Now show me you are still a man,’ I said, ‘I won’t ask again.’ He bent to take his cane from the ground and struggled out of that wheelchair. And so he managed it on his own and walked to me and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.”
I looked at the drawing on the kitchen wall, sketched by my grandfather. “You are my Joy. I love you with my life.” I murmured quietly.
Grandmother looked me in the eyes and asked me to make a promise.

Paragraph 1
Grandmother looked me in the eyes and asked me to make a promise. “I want you to promise me that you will tell no one.” grandmother said. “Why not?” I said, “You sacrifice your career for the love of your life.” “What I did was my own decision, I don’t want others to talk about your grandfather or my fake accident.” “But it’s the most heart touching story I know, I still have tears in my eyes.” “Just make me the promise, at least not before the end of my days.” she said it with a demanding tone and sighed...” “Alright grandmother, I respect your decision, I promise you. But, I have a little request for myself!” I said it with a big smile across my face. “A request?” she asked. “Will you dance for me again? Please?” I asked with begging eyes, and we both laughed.
    Paragraph 2
A few years went by. Six months after grandmother’s funeral. I made a decision to share her story with the world. But, it needed to be very formal and respectful. So, first I took a photo of the drawing on the kitchen wall, sketched by my grandfather; and showing both grandfather and grandmother’s cane under the drawing. The photo was for the cover page. Then I had a hard time choosing the topic between ‘I love you with my life’ and ‘Happiness’. And, I went with ‘Happiness’. Because, I believe this story makes others feel happy. Then, I had a formal sit-down with my parents, I wanted their approval before I moved forward, to show respect to the family. Finally, I had everything I needed for the story, and I posted on my Facebook, twitter, and blog. I had tons of feed-backs, and the story is still spreading, spreading grandmother’s love for grandfather, spreading happiness in the world.
