Vanessa Berlowitz, who studied science at Oxford University, now works as a producer for the BBC. She has worked on many nature documentaries, including the 2006 BBC program Planet Earth. For this series, she travelled around the world to film the world’s greatest mountains.
The job of series producer is very complex. For Frozen Planet, a sevenpart series that explores what life is like on the North and South Poles, Berlowitz had to decide when and where to film. She also had to decide how to tell the story. Every day, she helped set up the cameras, which can take hours. With the crew, she often spent hours quietly looking or waiting for animals. She talked about the day the crew finally found a polar bear and her cubs.
“A mother polar bear was having a hard time finding food for her cubs. But the little cubs were playing, which made her hunt difficult. I was crying with laughter when she put one of the little cubs in a hole so she could hunt. I thought, this is what mothers do!”
Berlowitz is one of very few series women producers. She hopes more women will become producers in the future. She said: “As producers, you do not have to be very physically strong, but you have to be happy to go to extreme areas.”
Berlowitz enjoys seeing new parts of the world and filming things many people have never seen before. But the best part of her work is hearing from the people who watch her documentaries.
“I got a wonderful email from an elevenyearold girl from Iran. She was so excited that women do jobs like mine. She wants to try and follow my example. She wrote me a beautiful poem, which was about the polar bear film. It made me cry with joy.” she said.
4. What can we learn about Berlowitz’s work?
A. It needs to be done independently. B. It always puts her in danger.
C. It takes time and patience. D. It has nothing to do with her major.
5. What feeling did Berlowitz express from her observation of bears?
A. Pride. B. Worry. C. Pity. D. Fun.
6. What did Berlowitz say to possible producers?
A. Grow a strong body. B. Be prepared to travel around the world.
C. Be pleased to go to terrible places. D. Learn to deal with extreme weather conditions.
7. Why did Berlowitz talk about the Iranian girl?
A. To prove Frozen Planet's huge influence.
B. To describe her hope for the little girl.
C. To show her audience’s positive response means a lot to her.
D. To explain she set a good example for girls worldwide.
C
Make Up Your Mind to Succeed
Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s winter.” And their report cards sounded more positive than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweek, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”
Dweek has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:
A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic - you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.
On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.
We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweek’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.
8. What does the author think about the present generation?
A. They don’t do well at school. B. They are often misunderstood.
C. They are eager to win in sports. D. They are given too much praise.
9. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ________.
A. doesn’t want to work hard B. cares a lot about personal safety
C. cannot share his ideas with others D. can succeed with the help of teachers
10. What does the growth mind-set believe?
A. Admitting failure is shameful. B. Talent comes with one’s birth.
C. Scores should be highly valued. D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.
11. What should parents do for their children based on Dweek’s study?
A. Encourage them to learn from failures. B. Prevent them from making mistakes.
C. Guide them in doing little things. D. Help them grow with praise.
D
To solve a big environmental problem, chemists in the Czech Republic have been thinking small. Really small. Their new minirobot has one purpose: to help clean up tiny bits of plastic polluting waterways across the globe.
Each new robot is no bigger than the tip of a sharpened pencil. They are magnetic (有磁性的) and shaped like stars. When sunlight hits them, they produce chemical reactions that push them through water in a specific direction. When they find a piece of plastic, they stick to it and start to break it down. When the light goes out, they let go and are free to be used again.
“This work is great,” says Douglas Blackiston at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. He’s a biologist who did not work on the project but knows about such devices. He’s been designing robots out of living cells, including some that might help with pollution cleanup. Speaking of the new one, he mentions that, “These robots can eat plastic. They chew it up. Or they can recover it and be collected with a magnet. Scientists love robots with all these capabilities. ”
Chemist Martin Pumera at the Czech University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague led the project. He studies ways to build microrobots. About a decade ago, he says, scientists began developing tiny bots that could move themselves in water. Then, they had to find them a mission and thought “Let’s make them do something useful.” Since then, Pumera has focused on the problem posed by microplastics, which are everywhere—from the bottom of the ocean to air blowing onto ice atop mountains. They’ve turned up in drinking water, both bottled and tap water, and some studies estimate that trillions of pieces of plastic end up in the world’s waters. The plastic has many sources, from drinking straws and shopping bags to laundry and cleaning wipes. Plastic doesn’t easily degrade or fall apart, and that’s always been one of its appeals.
Pumera says his final goal is to make cheap and environmentally friendly robots that can be used anywhere in the world.
12. What do the new robots mainly do?
A. To collect tiny bits of plastic in the sea B. To push the pollution in water away
C. To help do research into the plastic D. To deal with the plastic in water
13. How do the new robots get powered?
A. By stars B. By plastic C. By sunlight D. By living cells
14. Why did Pumera take part in the project?
A. Because of public attention to the plastic
B. Because of the challenges from the plastic
C. Because he was asked to do so by other scientists
D. Because he was inspired by the invention of microrobots
15. What is the best title of the article?
A. Small robots, big dreams B. No plastic in water anymore!
C. Robots, winners against plastic D. The fight between robots and plastic

Social Media Detox
January 22, 2021
By Li Hua
With the development of science and technology, there appear an increasing number of social media apps. Many teenagers are addicted to the colorful apps, leading to a bad effect on our life. The activity social media detox aims to raise the awareness of stepping away from social media, and also improve the ability to control ourselves.
Here are some of my suggestions to do the detox. Firstly, you can give your phones to your parents to avoid giving in. In addition, it is a good idea to pick up some hobbies, which helps to spend less time online. What’s more, you can visit your friends and have a proper conversation, realizing the value of real contact.
I really consider the activity makes agreat difference to us teenagers. By staying away from the various social media apps, we can not only concentrate on studies, but also communicate more with people in reality.
