Edward O. Wilson, known as “ant man”, was born on June 10, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was moved frequently throughout his childhood. Wilson grew up exploring the forests and wildlife. One of these adventures left him partly blind, but they also set off his lifelong fascination with ants and their social structures.
Wilson earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1955, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard and worked there until retirement.
Wilson's early study of ants led to his first major discovery in 1959: how ants communicate through the release of chemical signals.
Later,in 1990,Wilson and German biologist Bert Hölldobler published their Pulitzer- winning The Ants. It detailed the insects’ social structure that was both valued by scholars and accessible to general readers.
Another of Wilson's major works started in the early 1960s when he teamed up with Robert MacArthur. The pair published The Theory of Island Biogeography, where they sought to explain why different places have different numbers of species.
What many consider to be Wilson's most important contributions to evolutionary biology came in 1975 when he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. The work explored the genetic roots of animal behavior and argued that genes shaped human behavior.Wilson faced accusations for these ideas but his work finally largely proved true. In 1978, his ideas on the role biology plays in human culture peaked in On Human Nature, which won him a Pulitzer in 1979.
Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 20 books. These achievements offered him a type of superstar status, but friends and colleagues say the polite Southerner remained down to earth. “Professor Wilson really listened and engaged with whomever he was interacting with,” said Corrie S. Moreau, who was one of Wilson's final advisees.
24.What contributed to Wilson's passion for ants?
    A. His boyhood time spent in nature. B.The discovery he made about ants.
    C. The school education he received. D. His disability.
    25.What is Wilson's first Pulitzer-winning book about?
    A. The social structure of ants.
    B. The distribution of different species.
    C. The links between biology and human culture.
    D. The role of chemical signals in communication.
26.According to the last paragraph, which word best describes Wilson?
    A.Imaginative. B.Modest. C.Open-minded. D.Independent.

Away from the bright lights of the city, if you look up at the night sky you will see an ocean of bright stars. But in the illuminated (灯火通明的) concrete (混凝土) jungles we humans have built ourselves, it’s a different story.
This year, Earth Hour was observed on March 26. The annual tradition, started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, was created to raise awareness for climate change. Those celebrating turn off all their electrical appliances (家用电器) for one hour. It also draws attention to another serious problem that the world is currently facing – the threat of light pollution.
Light pollution happens when too much man-made light harms nature. Scientists have found that it is especially harmful to nocturnal (夜间的) animals. These creatures rely on the natural light cycle provided by the movement of the sun to help coordinate (协调) their sleep cycles. When this is disturbed by constant bright lights from man-made structures, it can seriously disorientate (使……失去方向感) the animals and harm their physical health. “Wildlife species have evolved on this planet with biological rhythms – changing that has profound effects,” said Travis Longcore, a biogeographer with the Urban Wildlands Group in Los Angeles, US. A lack of darkness at night can also cause difficulties for animals in other ways.
Newly hatched (孵化) baby sea turtles rely on the brighter horizon over the ocean to guide them from the beach to the sea. However, with artificial lights next to the oceans, the small animals are easily led away from the right path. “Hatchlings are attracted to lights and crawl (爬行) inland, or crawl aimlessly down the beach, sometimes until dawn (黎明), when predators (天敌) or birds get them,” said Michael Salmon, a biologist at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
Artificial light has caused a “drastic (激烈的) change” to the natural environment of animals, research scientist Christopher Kyba told the International Dark-Sky Association. “Predators use light to hunt, and prey (猎物) species use darkness as cover,” Kyba explained. If a predator has such an extra advantage in hunting its prey, this can lead to an imbalance in the ecosystem as the hunted species are no longer able to maintain their population when they become over-hunted.
    28.Why was Earth Hour created?
    A. To raise awareness of air pollution.
    B. To call on people to get closer to nature.
    C. To draw public attention to environmental issues.
    D. To reconsider the necessity of electrical devices.
    29. How does light pollution affect nocturnal animals?
    A. It slows their growth.
    B. It changes their sleep cycles.
    C. It lessens their dependence on the sun.
    D. It reduces their difficulties caused by darkness.
    30. What trouble does artificial lighting cause baby sea turtles?
    A. It can prevent them from reaching the ocean. B. It can affect their biological rhythms.
    C. It makes them lose their way to the beach. D. It exposes them to predators in the sea.
    31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The argument over artificial lights.
    B. Animals that benefit from artificial lights.
    C. The impact of artificial lights on environment.
    D. The dangers of an imbalance in the ecosystem.
    D
Despite advances in technology, many companies still plan routes for their delivery vehicles the same way they did a decade ago. Managors create routes the day before, and then hand printouts(打印资料) to drivers to follow or import(传输) them into the hand-hold devices. But when drivers get stuck in traffic jams while on their rounds, they're simply out of luck and behind schedule. The same thing happens if there's a surprise snowstorm that makes roads impassable(不能通行的).
Wise Systems, a Boston start-up, is dealing with this age-old problem by pairing machine learning with data collected from drivers' mobile phones. It deals with information like the driver's driving speed and location with other details including traffic, weather, where the orders are being delivered, and when customers are available to receive their orders.
What emerges is a delivery journey that can be tweaked depending on any problems that come up. If the technology determines that a driver will miss a scheduled stop because of road closures, for example, it will change the schedule for the entire day. If that's not possible, the driver will receive reminders on his or her mobile phone as a not-so-hidden clue to pick up the pace.
The goal of the technology is to create routes that allow drivers to work more quickly and effectively, which companies put more and more effort into now as they fight for customers who expect their orders almost immediately. By doing so, companies can save money by increasing the number of deliveries that drivers can make during shifts and make customers happier by raising the likelihood that their orders will arrive on time, or be delivered by the driver they prefer.
    32. What is the author’s attitude towards the commonly used delivery routes?
    A. confident. B. uncertain. C. negative. D. approving.
    33. What does the underlined word “tweaked” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. monitored. B. stopped. C. adjusted. D. predicted.
    34. What is becoming increasingly important for companies?
    A. order volume. B.customer satisfaction.
    C. decrease in costs. D. increase in efficiency.
    35. What is the purpose of the passage?
A.to advise a company. B. to introduce a new technology.
    C. to compare different route plans . D. to discuss problems with delivery.
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been stuck indoors. Online classes and working from home mean a lot of sitting around on your butt. We already know that if we don’t move much, we get fatter, we get heart problems and we may get diabetes (糖尿病).    36   .
A study of 937 Brazilian adults during the pandemic found that about one-third of them sat around for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression.
37   . It found that each extra hour of sitting time at ages 8, 10 and 12 led to higher depression scores by age 18. Eighteen-year-olds who sat most often had depression scores 28 percent higher than those who were more active.
38   . But according to Mats Hallgren from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, “sitting for too long can slow blood flow (流动) in the body, including blood flow to the brain.” It might also affect the growth of neurons (神经细胞) in the brain. And couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as snacking (吃零食) on junk food. All these may lead to depression.
The good news?    39   . Aaron Kandola from University College London, UK, said “all types” of movement might help, even light activity. “It is great to exercise and play sports,” said Kandola. “But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long ...... will help with mood, stress and thinking clearly.”    40   .
    A. Scientists are not sure yet about the link between too much sitting and depression
    B. But new studies have shown that it could hurt our mental health too
    C. Sitting for a long time may cause more damage to children than adults
    D. It’s easy to overcome
    E. The key message is just to move more, more often
    F. Another study looked at children
    G. Sitting for too long affects us in many ways
