He is a 62-year-old superior court judge, but they are former addicts and criminals. All of them, however, are part of one team: the Skid Row Running Club in Los Angeles (L.A.).
Twice a week, before the sun comes up, Judge Craig Mitchell runs the mile from his office at the county courthouse to The Midnight Mission, a social services organization centered in Downtown’s Skid Row — the well-known area where the city’s largest homeless population lives.
At the organization, he meets a group of 30 to 40 people and together they run through East L. A.The group includes runners from all walks of life and all levels of athleticism. Some members are homeless or in recovery, and others are lawyers, social workers or students.
Mitchell developed the program in 2012 after a man he’d once sentenced to prison returned to thank him. “He was paroled (假释) to The Midnight Mission and decided to come back and said ‘Thank you, Judge Mitchell, for treating me like a human being.’ The head of the organization at the time asked me if there was something that I could do to contribute to the organization, and I thought of starting a running club. That was the inception,” Mitchell said.
Every year, Mitchell takes his most devoted Skid Row runners on a free trip to participate in an international marathon. “I come back to the courthouse after any run and check off who is there. And so, I know exactly who has been faithful to the running program and who just comes once in a while,” he said.
Mitchell says he’s seen some participants turn their lives around, attending college, securing full-time employment and possessing calmness. “Running is a way for the participants to build relationships,” he said. “You can be an amazing runner and benefit as much as our fast runners, because at the end of the day you’re going to be surrounded by people who really care about you and want to spend time with you.” Everybody is welcome. Kindergarten represents a crucial environment in which children develop school-related skills and patterns of engagement. They form the basis for the development of later competence which is important for academic success. As for later academic skills, kindergarten achievements have been found to have great predictive value.
Given the long-lasting effects that kindergarten experiences have on later schooling, it is important to understand the factors associated with children's learning and motivation during this time. The quality of teacher-student interaction has been found to be important in terms of many different academic and socio-emotional outcomes. However, much of the previous work in the field has focused on children in later grades in elementary school and has been conducted in the United States. Fewer studies have been conducted in other educational environments and in kindergarten specifically.
Some researchers investigated bidirectional links between the quality of teacher-child relationships and children’s interest and pre-academic skills in literacy and math in Finland. Participants were 461 Finnish kindergarteners (6-year-olds) and 48 teachers.
The results indicated that teacher-perceived(教师感知的)conflicts predicted children’s lower pre-academic skills in both literacy and math. It is possible that when children experience conflicts with teachers, the negative emotions attached to these conflicts are harmful to children’s engagement in learning and curtail their interest in academic tasks. It’s also possible that children experiencing conflicts are missing out on time for learning literacy and math, either because they become separated from instructional activities or because teachers have to spend more instructional time on behavioral management.
The findings highlight the importance of kindergarten teachers being aware of how their relationships with children can influence children’s later schooling. Therefore, it would be important to develop pre-service and in-service programs and interventions to help teachers. Teacher education programs may also benefit teachers not only in academic content and peda-gogical (教育学的)practices but also in strategies used to build supportive relationships with children.
46.What do we learn about kindergarten achievements?
A.They’re closely related to kids’ personalities.
B.They greatly affect kids’ later academic skills.
C.They largely depend on the teachers' competence.
D.They’re mainly about kids’ problem-solving abilities.
47.From Paragraph 2, we know that the quality of teacher-student interaction in kindergarten
A.has drawn little attention from researchers
B.has been considered very important by teachers
C.has resulted from specific educational environments
D.has formed the basis of many good socio-emotional outcomes
48.What does the underlined word “curtail” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Develop. B.Maintain. C.Reduce. D.Assess.
49.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A.To promote the educational programs among kindergarten teachers.
B.To explain the benefits of carrying out pedagogical practices.
C.To call on kids to build up good relationships with teachers.
D.To highlight the importance of kindergarten teachers.
50.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The significance of developing kids' school-related skills.
B.The necessity of improving teachers' academic competence.
C.The ways of reducing teacher-student conflicts in kindergarten.
D.The influence of teacher-student interaction in kindergarten on kids.

Richard is a very a successful businessman. It is common for him to work hard with a non-stop. He wasn’t aware that he might wear himself out or die an early death until he overslept one morning, which was a sort of alarm. And then what happened? He had a week’s leave during which time he read novels, listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach, which has enabled Richard to return to work again.
In our modern life, we have lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world there is a universal but silly saying: “I am so busy.”
We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to successfully deal with stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unable to find time to relax—— this has become the model of a successful life.
Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food providing is with strength, the quiet giving us wisdom.
How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of the week—— for followers of some religions—— for rest and praying. It is a day when we are not supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is a good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world.
Rest is s spiritual and biological need; however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, we may feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us permission to stop work. In fact, “Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply permission to rest; it is a rule to obey and a principle to follow.
51.What’s the function of the paragraph1?
A.To tell us that Richard lives a healthy life.
B.To bring up the topic of the passage.
C.To give us a brief introduction of Richard
D.To tell Richard is a successful businessman.
52.The “alarm” in the first paragraph refers to “_______”.
A.a signal of stress B.a warning of danger
C.a sign of age D.a spread of disease
53.According to Paragraph 3, a successful person is one who is believed to _______.
A.be able to work without stress B.be more talented than other people
C.be more important than anyone else D.be busying working without time to rest
54.According to the passage during the Sabbath, what we should do except_____.
A.Praying for our family. B.Taking a good break.
C.Only working for two hours. D.Enjoying delicious meal.
55.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.We should balance work with rest. B.The Sabbath gives us permission to rest.
C.It is silly for anyone to say “I am busy.” D.We should be available to our family and friends.

I met Mrs. Sase in my senior year of high school. I was struggling greatly in her math class. On top of always struggling with math, I was dealing with the anxiety that came with being a foster youth and worrying deeply about the future that lay in store for me. I had been living with my foster parents (养父母), and our agreement was that after graduation I was to move out and begin my life as an adult to support myself, at seventeen.
What accompanied the burden of the anxiety was a lack of motivation in school. Most teachers didn’t notice me. Mrs. Sase, however, took a closer look. I will never forget the first time she walked over to my desk and handed me a little folded note. It read, “Are you okay?”
I was shocked by her genuine care and interest in my well-being. Not only was she sensitive enough to notice my reserve, but she also took the time to personally make a difference. She listened as I shared my most hidden fears about my past and the uncertain future that was closing in on me. She listened when others seemed to be too busy to show concern. And she agreed to write a letter of recommendation for me when I decided to apply for the Guardian Scholars Program, a program committed to helping ambitious, college-bound students exit the foster care system.
I found new ambition through Mrs. Sase’s support and devotion to my academic and personal success. Gradually, not only did my grades improve, but my confidence also improved.
The most amazing thing about Mrs. Sase was that I was just one of an army of students who would confess that Mrs. Sase had changed their lives. Her entire classroom was filled with letters of utmost appreciation for her and the life-changing impact she had on so many students.
Once, Mrs. Sase was in hospital for a week, during which we students visited her in turns and tried our best to do something for her because in our mind Mrs. Sase was an angel who spread her wings far and wide.
