I have a neighbour we call “Happy”.I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻的) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70,have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours
together working on it. Most of the neighbours watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size
of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans,we all wished we also
had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market,Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month,Happy and Ben invited most of the neighbourhood over for an “all-day food
fest”.We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what
was about to take place.
By 9:00 am,there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra and squash. By 10:00 am,there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner,we played games. As we were leaving,

People in the United States honour their parents with two special days:Mother’s
Day,on the second Sunday in May,and Father’s Day,on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care to their children. These two days
offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people
wear carnations(康乃馨).A red one symbolizes(象征)a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour their parents. It is
also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓地). On these days
families get together at home,as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor
barbecues(烤肉)for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the
value of the gift that is important, but it is“ the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores,
florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
28.Which is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for their parents?
A.Their parents bring them up.
B.Their parents give love and care to them.
C.Their parents educate them to be good persons.
D.Their parents passed away before they grew up.
29.What do you learn from the passage?

C.Not all the children respect their parents.
D.Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
30.On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day,________.
A.people usually have family parties.
B.everyone goes to visit the cemetery.
C.children always go to their parents’ home.
D.handmade cards are the most valuable gifts.
31.What do you think “florists” do?
A.They sell flowers.
B.They sell special clothes for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
C.They offer enough room for having family parties.
D.They make bread or pastry(点心).

Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk(风险)of becoming nearsighted(近视的),new research suggests.
In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found
that the kids who had been instructed(指导) to spend more time outdoors for three years
were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had
not been instructed.
The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was
7 at the start of the study,to attend one additional(额外的)60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also
encouraged to join their children for outdoor activities after school, especially during
weekends and holidays. The other children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years,30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干预) group became nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group.
It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight,
the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release(释放)of the chemical dopamine(多巴
胺)of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制)the type of growth in the eye
that is associated with(与….有关) nearsightedness.
Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However,it's important to protect kids' skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.
32.What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?
A.They attended an extra class of outdoor activities.
B.They just continued to do their usual activities.
C.They spent one hour in doing eye exercises.
D.They participated in outdoor activities with parents.
33.What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine?
A.It can contribute to poor sight.
B.It can damage people's brain.
C.It is beneficial to eyesight.
D.It means low levels of light intensity.
34.What may be discussed in the following paragraph?
A.How to design outdoor activities for kids.
B.How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.
C.How to protect kids' skin and eyes from UV light.
D.How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.
35.Which can serve as the best title for the passage?
A.The More Time Outdoors, the Better
B.Kids May See Better if They Spend More Time Outside
C.It's Time to Join Kids for Outdoor Activities
D.Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness
