On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn’t believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy.
I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road.
Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed (抓住) the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word.
I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head.
After this happened, I thought about how thankful I was. Even though the father didn’t say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it’s only a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
I didn’t really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help.

I sat in my seat as my new grade six classmates found theirs. In the front of the class stood our new math teacher, watching us. “Come on .We don’t have all day. Get settled please.”
The bell rang.
“OK. Welcome to a new school year. I’m Mr. Stevens and I’m sure I’ll learn all your names in no time.” He walked around the class handing out math books. When it was done, he returned to the front of the class and looked at us. We stared back. “What are you waiting for? Get started?” he said.
We looked at him----confused(困惑的). Wasn’t he going to teach us?
“Is there something wrong with your ears? You’re not all deaf, are you?”
One brave boy at the back of the class asked what we all wanted to know. “Mr. Stevens, aren’t you going to teach us?”
“Rubbish!” Mr. Stevens replied, “You’re smart kids. Open your books and get down to it. If you have any trouble or any questions, raise your hand, and I’ll come to help you.”
My friend Paul and I exchanged glances and opened our books to the first chapter. A competition began. Paul and I spent all our free time at home working through the lessons. Mr. Stevens, keeping his words, helped anyone who was stuck in a problem. We worked like dogs and finished two and one half math books that first year . It was a turning point in my life. Mr. Stevens made me realize I was good at math and also able to reach the top of any class I attended.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus was a popular television show back then. The actors brought the best British humour(幽默)into our Canadian lives. Mr. Stevens would often act out one of their skits in front of the class. Some thought he was strange, and I guess he was, but he knew how to make a math lesson interesting.

A. Because he came to like school from then on.
B. Because he realized he could be a top student.
C. Because he began to show interest in math.
D. Because he changed his attitude toward life.
10.What’s the author’s attitude(态度) toward Mr. Stevens?
A. Respectful B. Doubtful C. Indifferent D. Disappointed
11.The underlined word “skits” in the last paragraph probably means______.
A. important lessons B. wild animals C. famous actors D. funny performances
D

We did a thorough cleaning
Last Friday afternoon, our class did a thorough cleaning. We were divided into five groups, and each group undertook different activities. I belonged to Group One, whose work was to do the cleaning in the classroom. First, we collected all the books, exam papers and other things scattered on the desk and put them in place. Then we cleaned the windows of the classroom. After that, we swept the floor and the hallway. One hour later, we finished the work. Seeing the tidy windows and shining floor, we felt happy and satisfied though tired completely.
Such activities can strengthen our awareness of work and help us become healthy mentally and physically. We should take part in such activities more often.
