Have you ever been on social media and seen your favorite celebrity talking about a product? These promotions might not be totally random, and are actually seen as a vital part of the marketing process. The question is: How do social media influencers ‘influence’ what you buy?
Human desire for status and making friends, combined with our need to belong to a group, makes us receptive to being ‘socially influenced’. Companies often use that desire to have a similar lifestyle to a celebrity we admire to hawk or launch a product. So, what do these promotions actually do?
Firstly, they can be used to build brand awareness. A social media influencer should have a strong understanding of the platform they operate on, and therefore can create engaging content that not only sticks to the brand image, but sparks their followers’ interests in a product they might never have seen before.
Secondly, influencers can improve a company or product’s relationship with their customer base. According to InMoment’s 2018 US Retail CX Trends Report on customer loyalty, 77% of buyers have been brand loyal for more than ten years. This is also true of 60% of millennials. A popular celebrity can target key demographics and talk or blog about a product, which can create an instant and lasting bond with the consumer.
Lastly, influencers can improve customer buying habits with seemingly “unbiased opinions”. We are more likely to respond to ‘peer recommendation’ than traditional ads, meaning the fact we see an influencer as a ‘friend’ can make us less likely to be doubtful about what we are seeing.
So, the next time you see a celebrity talking about a product, you might want to consider that this could be a carefully crafted marketing strategy designed to target your core needs. If you find yourself examining a product you’ve seen on social media, you may well have been influenced.
24. Why do companies invite celebrities to launch products?
A. Because celebrities can improve the companies' public images.
B. Because celebrities want to make more money.
C. Because consumers like to share similarity with celebrities.
D. Because consumers can make friends with celebrities.
25. According to the passage, which strategy is often used by influencers?
A. Setting up operation platforms.
B. Sending gifts to customers.
C. Taking advantage of their popularity.
D. Recommending products to their friends.
26. What does the underlined word unbiased probably mean in the passage?
A. aggressive B. objective C. subjective D. supportive
27. The passage is mainly about __________.
A. how social media make ads
B. how social media influence our lifestyle
C. how celebrities earn fame
D. how social influencers affect our buying
C
Shinrin-yoku means “forest bathing”. Forest bathing doesn't mean you take a bath in the forest; rather, you simply go for a walk in the woods or a city park, where you slacken by using all your senses to experience nature.
Yoshifumi Miyazaki, from Chiba University, is among a growing number of scientists who have begun studying the science behind the effects of nature on human health. In his book Shinrin-yoku: The Japanese Art of Forest Bathing. Miyazaki explains the techniques of forest bathing.
Miyazaki has an interesting theory about why shinrin-yoku is so effective. He points out that for more than 99.99% of the time, humans have lived in a natural environment. In fact, in 1800, only 3% of the world's population lived in cities, and by 2016, this figure reached 54%. This is only going to get worse; officials predict that by 2050, 66% will live in cities.
This suggests we live in our modem society with bodies that are still used to the natural environment, he writes in the book, because “genes cannot change over just a few hundred years". The science behind the research studies he presents in the book makes a convincing case that forest bathing is an effective method for reducing stress in today's world.
Now city planners are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of nature and are creating new kinds of “parks” out of empty spaces. There're also more city gardens where people can grow vegetables. For kids, kitchen gardens in schools are becoming popular. As Miyazaki stresses, you don't have to find a formal park or garden to practice shinrin-yoku. Instead, you can enjoy the effects of nature wherever there're plants.
Better yet, he says, we can bring nature closer to where we spend most of our time. Miyazaki's research has shown that just increasing the amount of plants in a room can affect the relaxation benefits of the room. What's more, even when people simply look at flowers, their bodies relax and stress levels decrease.
28. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Behave. B. Entertain. C. Sleep. D. Relax.
29. How does the author mainly develop the third paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing figures.
C. By making remarks. D. By presenting research findings.
30. Why does forest bathing work effectively according to Miyazaki?
A. Human genes can change easily. B. Nature is part of the modem society.
C. Human body can integrate into nature. D. People can always get excited in nature.
31. Which of the following will Miyazaki agree on forest bathing?
A. It is easy to operate. B. It is meant for gardeners.
C. It is unaffordable in the city. D. It is inconvenient to practice.
D
The future of space exploration may depend on an art form from the past: origami (折纸艺术), the ancient art of paper folding.
Researchers from Washington State University (WSU), US, have used origami to possibly solve the problem of storing and moving fuel to rocket engines, a key challenge in space travel, according to Newswise. They’ve developed a foldable plastic fuel “bladder (囊状物)” resistant to super cold temperatures, which could be used to store and pump fuel in spacecrafts of the future. Their findings have recently been published in the journal Cryogenics.
“Folks have been trying to make bags for rocket fuel for a long time,” said Jake Leachman, one of the lead researchers. “We currently don’t do large, long-duration trips because we can’t store fuel long enough in space.”
Meanwhile, NASA is also looking to paper folding to help observe distant planets. The agency is currently developing Starshade, a foldable, sunflower-shaped piece of hardware that would help block starlight and enable telescopes to view distant objects more clearly in space.
“A huge part of my job is looking at something on paper and asking, ‘Can we fly this?’” Manan Arya, a technologist in California, said. “Once I realized this is how you fold spacecraft structures, I became interested in origami. I realized I was good at it and enjoyed it. Now, I fold constantly. ”
Using origami for space purposes isn’t new, however. Solar arrays (太阳能阵列), experimental wings for space shuttle programs and an inflatable (可充气的) satellite were also inspired by origami in both past and present space projects.
“With most origami, the magic comes from the folding,” Robert Salazar, who helped design the Starshade and now works on the Transformers project, said in a statement. “There are so many patterns to still be explored.”
32. How could the “bladder” help in future missions?
A. To protect spacecrafts from extreme weather.
B. To be used to store and supply fuel in spacecrafts.
C. To help rocket engines cut energy consumption.
D. To be used to improve energy efficiency.
33. What can we know about NASA’s Starshade?
A. It can be used to get telescopes closer to stars.
B. It can enlarge the view of telescopes in space.
C. It can absorb a star’s light before it enters telescopes.
D. It can help telescopes get clearer pictures of objects in space.
34. What is this text?
A. A travel journal. B. A digest.
C. A science report. D. An advertisement.
35. Which can be the suitable title for the text?
A. Folding into space. B. The art of paper folding.
C. Space exploration. D. The origami-inspired projects.

How to Reduce Gift Wrap Waste
Wrapping paper may have “paper” in its name, but that doesn’t automatically mean it can be recycled. 36 Try these suggestions for cutting down the amount of wrapping paper you throw away.
Reuse what you have. 37 It’s estimated that the U.S. produces 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper annually, and 2.3 million pounds of that stays in people’s homes, awaiting reuse.
Use different materials. 38 Select basic brown thick paper that can be made up with a bow, ribbons, leaves, pinecones or markers. Repurpose newspapers, old posters and children’s school artworks as wrapping paper. There are plenty of other eco-friendly alternatives to wrapping paper that are just delightful and celebratory.
39 Use baskets, fabric, gift boxes or bags, tea towels, and more to contain and display your presents. Learn the Japanese art of wrapping, using beautiful knots(绳结) to fasten colorful, reusable fabrics in attractive ways. This way, you’ll have no wrapping paper waste to deal with.
Ask for better paper. Shops store what customers want, and recyclability should be a top priority, so let that be known when you’re out shopping. As explained by Simon Ellin, CEO of the Recycling Association, a trade body that represents about 90 waste management companies and paper merchants in the United Kingdom, “It’s a campaign we’ve been on all year — do you really need to design a non-paper wrapping paper? Make paper with recycling in mind!” 40
A. Try zero waste.
B. Shop with that in mind, too.
C. You don’t have to choose shining paper to decorate a present.
D. In fact, many types of wrapping paper cannot due to their materials.
E. When wrapping paper is extremely thin, it has few good quality fibers for recycling.
F. Wrapping paper can be used many times if care is taken to unwrap it without tearing.
G. Having a mix of recyclable and non-recyclable papers is a real problem for companies.

Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.
She'd checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.
The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.
She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊) toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers—typically not the type for hiking.
Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing that, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.

Paragraph 1:
Bales faced a dilemma (窘境) about whether to follow the tracks or not. If she chose to follow the tracks, it would add time and risk to her hiking, compromising her safety. But the tracks ahead suggested someone might be in danger, and she couldn’t let this go. Spinning around, she called out into the frozen fog, “Hello! Is anybody out there?” Cautiously, she then walked in the direction of the tracks. Hardly had she rounded a corner than she spotted a man sitting motionlessly.
Paragraph 2:
Her searching now turned into rescuing the man. She approached him instantly and found he was suffering from frostbite on his feet. Without any hesitation, she wrapped his body with warm clothes, and then poured him some sugary drink. The wind roared over and they would die soon if they didn’t get out of there. She supported the man and inched along the trail. With great efforts, Bales managed to save the man’s life. Exhausted, she felt that it was all worth it.
Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not. Her searching now turned into rescuing the man.(她的搜寻现在变成了营救那个人),
If she chose to follow the tracks, she’d add time and risk to her hiking, compromising her safety. She rounded a corner and spotted a man sitting motionlessly. Exhausted, she felt that it was all worth it.
