In 1918 a doctor and his pet dog walked with a blind man. The doctor was away for a short time. When he came back, he saw his pet guiding the blind man to walk safely. So he trained his dog to be a guide and it worked out well. Germany helped him start a program to train dogs to be guides. Dorothy, an American woman, went to Germany to find out about the guide dogs. Then she wrote about it for a newspaper in New York in 1927. Soon more people knew of the guide dogs.
The best dogs for the job are clever and fit. It takes more than two years to train a little dog to be a guide dog. When the dog is fourteen months old, it learns many instructions. Then the owner and the dog meet, and they practice for four weeks.

If you want to make films then you’ll be interested in our competition. If you’re between 12 and 16, you can enter this year’s film-making competition. The film should last no more than 12 minutes and you should have at least three main characters.
We have seen some great films over the years from very exciting young film-makers. Last year’s films were about the family, and we saw some wonderful films. This year, however, we want films about the weather—it can either be about how it makes you feel or how it can change a day. A challenging topic!
There are some fantastic prizes. Our first prize winner will visit Paris. We have other prizes to give away---there are 200 books and also some of the latest cameras to win.
You can send your films to us by post or bring them to our office in the Market Square. If you have any questions about the competition, we’ll be glad to hear from you. You can telephone us at 16355934.

When some people say teenagers are getting worse, most people disagree. Teenagers say they are growing up. They can make their own decisions and have part-time jobs. Their parents say,“Our children are good. They like loud music but they play it in their own rooms. They help in the house. But they feel bored sometimes because there’s nothing interesting in the neighborhood.”A teacher says that he believes most teenagers are very kind. Also, lots of them study hard. In my opinion , a lot of teenagers are very kind. They often join community work groups. Sometimes they help old people, and they also volunteer in local hospitals or primary schools.
