    Books keeping your brain busy
If you're in need of a little literary escapism at the moment, look no further. Here are book recommendations from several celebrities to help keep your imagination occupied.
    Romesh Ranganathan: Life of Pi
Stand-up comedian (单口相声演员) Romesh Ranganathan picks Yann Martel’s bestseller Life of Pi. The novel tells the story of Pi Patel, a boy who spends months at sea, trapped on a lifeboat with a tiger. As the adventure unfolds, it becomes increasingly exciting. There’s also a surprise ending.
    Stacey Dooley: The Bees
TV presenter and journalist Stacey Dooley recommends The Bees by Laline Paull. Set inside a beehive (蜂窝) ,this imaginative novel follows the fortunes of Flora 717, a lowly cleaner bee who works her way up against the odds in a strictly graded society. It’s interesting to watch someone start with nothing and achieve incredible success.
    Sindhu Vee: Little Fires Everywhere
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is stand-up comedian Sindhu Vee’s top literary pick. Set in suburban Ohio, Vee says it’s a “minutely observed” novel exploring family, motherhood, race and class. At the centre of the story are two opposing women: uptight, controlling Elena Richardson and chaotic (吵闹的) artist Mia. Warren, whose arrival in the neighborhood quickly causes problems.
Phil Wang: Deep Sea and Foreign Going
Stand-up comedian Phil Wang unearths an unexpected gem (宝石) in Deep Sea and Foreign Going by Rose George. In the book, George describes the journey she took on a container ship from England to Singapore, elegantly mixing the story with insights into the global shipping industry. The book’s humanity is what stands out most for Wang. “Even in these most desperate circumstances, human compassion (同情) does break through.”

I’d gone snowboarding in France with my little brother, and what we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm. That day, fresh snow had been falling, and we were in high spirits. We stopped near the top of an off-path section that went through forests. I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.
I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. Just as I was regaining control, I ran into the trunk of a large tree.
It was like hitting a solid wall. The pain was instant. I knew immediately that my back was broken and quickly realized the situation could get very serious. Nobody would be coming past. There was no phone signal. It was snowing and cold. If I waited, I would probably be rescued eventually. But the chance of freezing to death before that happened was too high for me to risk staying put.
I tried to stand but fell down and almost blacked out with pain. I managed to get the board off from my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and used the board to slowly drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope.
It took about two hours before a skier found me and I got help. The mountain rescue team came, with my brother arriving shortly afterwards. I couldn’t feel my hands or my toes from the cold, but the relief at knowing I was safe was enormous.
A helicopter took me to hospital. I had broken one of my backbones, so I had an operation where the doctors inserted plates. The constant pain was huge, but it wasn’t as bad as seeing the pain and worry I put my family through.
The recovery road was tough, but I was lucky. Gradually, I was able to walk, then swim, then cycle and then run. I haven’t been back to the slopes yet, but it might happen someday—I will, however, be sticking to the paths.

    A. He decided to seek help himself. B. He intended to phone his brother at once.
    C. He was to remain where he was. D. He intended to give up asking for help.
26.What’s the author’s attitude towards his chance of snowboarding again?
    A. Optimistic B. Pessimistic
    C. Uncertain D. Concerned
27.What’s the best title of the passage?

If you look around your city, you might spot girls wearing hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets. A new trend is taking hold in China——guochao, or “China-chic”.
The term characterizes the rise of China’s native fashion trends. It has expanded the concept of “Made in China”, which has been recognized as the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics (美学) offered by homegrown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.
China-chic came into the spotlight in 2018. Before that, big-name foreign companies, such as NIKE, ADIDAS and PUMA, dominated the world market. To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of these Western brands. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection. The collection not only had a trendy look, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad. As a result, the company recorded 20 percent revenue (税收) growth in 2018, marking the first time the brand’s revenue had hit the 10-billion-yuan mark since its founding.
The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, launched its perfume (香水) and lip balm. “We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share,” Shen Qinfeng, the company’s marketing manager, told People’s Daily.
Now, the guochao trend is “moving to the next stage, where its success will rely, first and foremost, on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western recognition.” according to Kerra Zhou, founder of brand strategy consultancy Kerrisma.
No matter how the guochao trend develops, there’s one thing that won’t change: Behind the craze (狂热) is people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and their recognition of growing confidence in national culture, said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.
    28. Which of the following does NOT belong to guochao?
    A. ANTA bags with dragon pattern. B. Perfume of White Rabbit.
    C. The sports shoes of NIKE. D. The Wu Dao T-shirts of Li-Ning.
    29. Why does the author mention “White Rabbit” in paragraph 4?
    A. To show domestic brands opened up new development paths.
    B. To explain how domestic brands called up childhood memories.
    C. To prove guochao trend has moved to the next stage.
    D. To tell western brands no longer dominate the world market.
    30. What does Kerra Zhou’s words mean in the last but one paragraph?
    A. Chinese is still following the western trend.
    B. Guochao’s success relies on western recognition.
    C. Cultural confidence is the key to winning market share.
    D. National pride arouses the passion for Chinese elements.
    31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. The development of Chinese native brands.
    B. The boom of China-chic.
    C. The recognition of national culture.
    D. The campaign to gain cultural confidence.
    D
Eavesdropping (窃听) doesn’t just belong in the playbooks of police officers and spies. It is also a phenomenon that plays out among animals. Two biologists from the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Linnea W.Havmoller and Rasmus W.Havmoller spent nine months in a Panamanian rainforest studying how coatis (长鼻浣熊) cash in on the messy table manners of monkeys.
“Monkeys are messy eaters. After just a few bites of a fruit, they let it fall to the ground. Other species benefit from this habit. But to do so most effectively, they need to know where and when the monkeys are eating. Here, our study demonstrates that some animals use eavesdropping,” says Linnea W. Havmoller.
The eavesdropping consists of the fact that terrestrial (陆栖的) fruit-eating animals—coatis, in this case—listen in when spider monkeys eat fruits up in trees. The monkeys’ half-eaten fruit falls and becomes a tasty treasure for the creatures below. And these animals are ready to move in as soon as they hear the sound of fruit falling to the ground.
“In the bigger picture, this means that in areas where monkeys have been removed from the local environment—typically as a result of hunting or destroyed forest—there can be a large and negative effect. Not only will the species of animals which depend on the fruit being dropped by monkeys suffer—there can be an impact on the entire rainforest ecosystem because terrestrial fruit-eating animals help spread the seeds that allow the forest to reproduce,” says Rasmus W. Havmoller.
While previous observations of the eavesdropping phenomenon have been recorded by pen and paper—and were at risk of misinterpretation—the UCPH researchers adopted a variety of technologies. They collected data using GPS collars, camera traps, speakers playing monkey sounds, and traps that collected fallen fruit. Data from the study show that over 90% of the fruit which landed in the traps had bite marks and was half-eaten by monkeys, and that the fruit that fell outside the traps was eaten almost immediately.
    32. What does the underlined part “cash in on” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Fight with. B. Take advantage of.
    C. Make fun of. D. Pick out.
    33. How might coatis get their food?
    A. They rely mainly on windfalls.
    B. They climb up trees to eat fruits.
    C. They steal stored fruits from other animals.
    D. They wait for dropped fruits from spider monkeys.
    34. What can we infer from Rasmus W. Havmoller’s words in paragraph 4?
    A. There is a shortage of seed spreading animals.
    B. The damage to the rainforest ecosystem is severe.
    C. The loss of one species affects biodiversity in the rainforest.
    D. Hunting makes terrestrial animals decrease in great number.
    35. What does the author say about the research results by the UCPH?
    A. They were supported by reliable data.
    B. They ran the risk of being misunderstood.
    C. They were recorded by pen and paper.
    D. They used previous observations for reference.

    Road Rage(路怒症)
We all know driving can be stressful. 36 Manoeuvres (巧妙的移动) like that can make us consumed with anger. So what is road rage, and what things can cause it?
Road rage, simply put, is a sudden burst of anger that motorists experience when they feel angered by something another driver, cyclist or pedestrian has done. Road rage can show itself in several ways. 37 The drivers themselves may feel anxiety and stress, which can cause them to speed or change directions across the road.
38 Being tailgated (紧跟前车), undertaken on a busy motorway, seeing someone moving across several lanes, chatting on their phone, or hogging (独占) the middle lane in front of us are just some of the things that may stress us. And what about parking? Someone stealing the space we wanted at the last second could make us more annoyed and madder! 39
So what can we do to keep relaxed? Try driving in a good mood, and if you see a traffic jam, just remember that they can’t be avoided. 40 Also, if you see someone who is really angry, try not to maintain eye contact, and don’t get out of the car to confront them. And if you feel stressed and anxious, try pulling over somewhere and resting while you calm down.
    A. Just remember road rage can happen to anyone.
    B. Being aware of what can generate these feelings of rage may be key to controlling it.
    C. They include verbal or physical threats, insults, and even dangerous driving.
    D. One minute you’re minding your own business and the next someone cuts you up.
    E. What does road rage lead to?
    F. And try leaving a little earlier in future.
    G. So what can cause us to experience road rage?

It was Saturday. Whether it was sunny or cloudy, hot or cold, I cannot remember it was a Saturday because the mall was packed with people. I was with my mom. Mom is short and skinny. It is easy to overlook her in a crowd simply because she is nothing extraordinary to see.
On that day we walked down the road, taking quick looks at window boutiques(精品店)because we both knew we wouldn’t be buying much, like always. I remember I was looking up at the people we passed as we walked. Ladies wore five-inch heels that clicked importantly on the floor and bright, luxury clothing. An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. I tried to push it out, but once it took root it refused to go. It got more unbearable with every second until I could deny it no longer; I was ashamed of my mother.
We were in a high-class neighborhood, I knew that. We lived in a small, overpriced apartment building that hung on to the edge of our county that Mom chose to move to because she knew the schools were good. As I looked at the passers-by and then turned accusing (谴责的) eyes on Mom, I realized for the first time that we didn't belong there. I could see the heavy lines around Mom’s eyes and mouth. She wore cheap, old clothes, and shoes with the soles (鞋底) worn down. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make ends meet and her hair was too gray for her age. I looked at her, and I was ashamed.
My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment she stood out because she was just so plain. Saying I’d meet her at the clothes outlet (专营店) around the corner, I hurried away to the bathroom. I didn’t want to be seen with her, although there was no one important around to see me anyway. When I finally made my way to the outlet with hesitant steps, I found that Mom wasn’t there.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
With no other options, I had to search the other stores in the area for her.

I felt like I’d been dropped into a cold lake, facing Mom's offer— the beautiful sweater.

    Dear Eileen Gu,
Congratulate you on your remarkable achievements of being awarded two gold and one silver medals as well as being admitted to the Stanford University. Words fail to convey my admiration for you, and I'd like to ask you for advice on how to balance study and hobbies.
Recently, I have just devoted all myself to study with no time for my hobbies. I stay stuck in the mud of confusion and anxiety on how to balance them. I also feel the colour of my life is fading away on account of the absence of hobbies. Knowing that you can always find the way out, I am eager to turn to you for constructive advice.
I'd appreciate it if you could spare time to reply to me. Best wishes!

Reluctant and impatient, I was almost running out of my desire to look for her. However, I couldn't have been more wrong. Mom was standing in the middle of a high-end store, holding a sweater that looked much too expensive. She said, “This will look good on you. Do you want it?”And I almostagreed, carelessly, thoughtlessly. Then I took a closer look at the small, weary woman with a big smile stretching across her narrow face and a sweater in her hands, happy to be giving me something so nice, and my words died in my throat.
I felt like I'd been dropped into a cold lake, facing Mom's offer--the beautiful sweater. I was stunned as if time froze with tears uncontrollably welling up in my eyes. The expensive sweater on her hands was in marked contrast to the cheap and old clothes on her because she spent her money buying me new ones. She looked so tired and unattractive all the time because she was busy working to provide for me. She had nomake-up on because she was just content with me. What was behind her plain appearance was the unconditional love she had for me. Suddenly, Mom was beautiful and extraordinarily wonderful in my eyes.I was no longer ashamed of her, but of myself."Do you want it?" Mom repeated. “No, thanks.”

    A篇
Romesh Ranganathan: Life of Pi部分,再根据Yann Martel's bestseller可知,这本书的作者是Yann Martel。
根据“Stacey Dooley: The Bees”中的 “graded society”与 “Sindhu Vee: Little Fires Everywhere”中的“race and class” 可知。
根据 “Phil Wang: Deep Sea and Foreign Going” 中的 “George describes the journey she took on a container ship...”

    24. B 从文章第三段 “ I knew immediately that my back was broken” 可知。
I haven’t been back to the slopes yet ,but it might happen someday ...

    28. C 从文章第一段举的例子和第二段对国潮的解释 “the rise of China’s native fashion trends”以及 “the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics(美学) offered by homegrown Chinese brands” 可以看出包含中国文化和美学元素的服装或产品都属于国潮。
    29. A 从文章第四段 “The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles.”
    30. C 从文章倒数第二段 “its success will rely, first and foremost, on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western recognition.”

Monkeys aremessy eaters. After just a few bites of a fruit,they let it fall to the ground. Other speciesbenefit from this habit可知,猴子的进食习惯会使一些动物受益。由此可推知,cash in on意为“利用”。
根据第三段中的coatis ... listen in when spider monkeys eat fruits up in trees .. falls and becomes a tasty treasure for the creatures below ... hear the sound of fruit falling to the ground 可知,蜘蛛猴在树上吃水果的时候,长鼻浣熊会偷听,接着猴子吃了一半的水果会掉到地上,成为树下的长鼻浣熊的美餐。

第三十六部分 D 根据空后的 “Manoeuvreslike thatcan make us consumed with anger (像那样巧妙的移动会使我们生气)”可知。
第三十七部分 C 根据上文 “Road rage can show itself in several ways.” 可知,C选项中的 “They” 和上文 “in several ways” 对应。
第四十部分 F 根据空前 “if you see a traffic jam, just remember that they can’t be avoided.”

43.A根据首段中的that turns out to be big和末段中的The cost of opportunities missed…
    44. D45.D根据 After the highly successful of his 1894 comedy, a couple of Viennese writers approached Shaw for the purpose of 和rights to turn his play into an operetta可知,1894年萧伯纳“发表(release)”的喜剧《武器与人》大获成功,之后有两位维也纳的作家与萧伯纳联系,想“得到(obtaining)”将其戏剧改编成轻歌剧的专有权。
47.D根据第三段的one of the most distinguished composers of operetta’s so-called Silver Age可知,奥斯卡·施特劳斯在当时还是一个“相对而言没有名气的(unknown)作曲家。
48.B49.C根据turn his play into an operetta;to be a shame of his masterpiece和to the possibilities the new business presented可知,萧伯纳认为这次“改编(adaptation)”是自己屈尊俯就,这 “阻碍他 (prevented)”看到新兴行业的发展前途。
50.B根据He allowed them the adaptation rights but proudly和下文made a fortune in royalties except Mr.Shaw可知,萧伯纳给了他们改编专有权,但他明确“拒绝(turn down)”他们给予的版权使用费。
52.C53.B根据to be produced in London and on Broadway and its tickets were sold out quickly, a fortune in royalties except Mr.Shaw可知,这部轻歌剧“持续(continuously)”在伦敦和百老汇演出,每次演出都一票难求,这使得除萧伯纳以外的“创作者们(creators)”都得到了丰厚
    54.D根据第三段首句中的shame of his masterpiece以及proudly……a royalty they offered,可知,萧伯纳错过这次机会是由于“傲慢(pride)”。
55.C根据You may miss the next Oscar Straus可知,本句要表达的是:在“拒绝(say no to)”别人时要谨慎,因为你可能错过的是下一个奥斯卡·施特劳斯。

    (Text 1)
M: Hiya, what’s in the big backpack?
W: Oh, I’m just coming back from my first yoga class.
M: Oh yeah? How’d you find it?
W: Yeah, it was way harder than I thought it was going to be. I’m exhausted!
    (Text 2)
W: Chris, have you heard about Jane’s leaving?
M: Really? How do you know that?
W: She told me. Actually, I’m not as surprised as you are. I don’t think she is happy here.
    (Text 3)
M: Excuse me, can we leave our backpack and suitcase here?
W: OK. That’s 4 dollars for the suitcase and 3 dollars for the backpack.
M: Fine, thanks. We’ll come and get them around 2 this afternoon.
    (Text 4)
M: Don’t forget to brush your teeth, sweetheart.
W: Okay, dad. Will you read me a story?
M: I’d be glad to. I’ll read you your favorites when you get under the covers.
    (Text 5)
W: David, I won’t be able to meet you in the afternoon. I have to take my car to the repair shop.
M: That’s OK. That way I’ll have time to see my doctor after visiting a customer.
    (Text 6)
W: Is there any way I can get to Los Angeles as soon as possible? My flight from New York didn’t arrive on time, so I missed my connecting flight.
M: Well, let me check. We don’t have any direct flights, but if you’re willing to stop over in San Francisco, there’s a flight leaving in 20 minutes. That will be your best choice for now.
W: As long as it gets me to Los Angeles in one piece, I’ll take it. Would there be any extra charge?
M: No, ma’am. You’re fine. Here is your ticket and please hurry to gate number 20. The ground crew will be waiting for you.
    (Text 7)
W: It’s almost our lunch break. Let’s try something different for lunch today! How about some Indian food at the restaurant down the street from our office? They’ve recently opened and have become quite famous for tasty food.
M: Oh, I already took my family there last weekend, but it was not as impressive as people say. There were too many people and the service wasn’t good at all because it was too busy.
W: Really? I had no idea. Where should we go then?
M: Actually, why don’t we just have some delivery food and eat here? There is still much to be done before the afternoon’s meeting.
    (Text 8)
M: Good morning. This is Greenville Document Disposal. How can I help you?
W: Hi. Our office generates a lot of confidential paperwork, and we are looking for a secure way to get rid of it. Your company handles that kind of thing, right?
M: We do. And we send trucks to pick up the documents.
W: Oh, yes... I’ve seen your trucks. But I really wonder... are the bins you provide really secure?
M: Absolutely. All of our bins are fitted with a lock.
W: And how often do you pick up the bins?
M: We can pick them up daily, weekly, monthly... as often as you’d like.
W: Once a month would be enough for us.
    (Text 9)
W: Hi Sven, how are you doing recently?
M: Oh Sally, you can’t believe what happened to me last weekend.
    W: Tell me about it.
M: Well, last Friday I was looking forward to a relaxing two days of skiing in the mountains. But the weekend didn’t work out exactly as I had planned.I worked until late on that evening. Then I locked my office and got into the lift.I pressed the button for the ground floor and the lift started going down but then stopped. I pressed the alarm and shouted but nobody heard me.
W: Oh, how awful! Did you try to make a phone call to others?
M: Yes, I tried to phone Silvia but my mobile didn’t work in the lift… Silvia was very worried when I didn’t come home at that time and she couldn’t understand why my mobile wasn’t going. She turned to the neighborhood police for help. They looked for me but in vain.
W: So when did you get out?
M: I was in the lift until Monday morning. When the office workers arrived, they phoned the emergency number and somebody came and repaired the lift.I was very happy to get out. And you know what? I believe I will soon be the fittest man in my office — from now on I’m going to take the stairs every day — even though it’s 12 floors.
    (Text 10)
W: Good morning everyone, and welcome to the 2nd Annual Wullaballoo Conference. Before we get underwaywith today’s programme, let me fill you in as to what’s going on tomorrow.
At 9:00 a.m. right here in the Main Hall, we’ll be hearing a lecture from Dr John Smith about “Computer as Teacher”. An hour later, there will be a presentation of papers by various experts. Thatwill take place in the Garden Room on the ground floor. We’ll be gathering at the west end, the slightly raised area called Level 2.
After all that thinking, talking, and listening, I expect everyone will be a bit weary. So at 11:30, there will be a break for coffee, cookies, and other light refreshments. These will be available at the Refreshment Stand, placed by the door back here in the Main Hall. Also, if you choose to skip the formal lunch, you can buy a packed lunch at the stand for a reasonable price.
I strongly urge you, however, to join us at the formal lunch. That won’t be till one o’clock sharp, so you have time to walk around the town. We’ll be eating at the Sea View Restaurant. The restaurant is located right here in the hotel, on the top floor.
After lunch, we’ll come back downstairs to Level 2 in the Ballroom for the presentation of further papers, which will begin at 2:00 p.m. Please try to be on time. Thank you in advance.
