Their man-servant had been sent one morning to Exeter on business, and when he waited at table, he began to chat with his mistress(女主人).
“I suppose you know, ma’am, that Mr. Ferrars is married?”
Marianne gave a violent start, fixed her eyes upon Elinor, saw her turning pale, fell back in her chair and lost control of her emotions. Mrs. Dashwood was shocked to realize by Elinor’s expression how much she really suffered.
Mrs. Dashwood immediately took all that trouble on herself, and Elinor had the benefit of the information without the effort of seeking it.
“Who told you that Mr. Ferrars was married, Thomas?”
“I see Mr. Ferrars myself, ma’am, this morning in Exeter, and his lady too, Miss Steele as was. They were stopping in a chaise(马车)at the door of the New London Inn, and she knew me and called to me, and inquired after you, ma’am, and the young ladies, especially Miss Marianne.”
“But did she tell you she was married, Thomas?”
“Yes, ma’am.” She smiled, and said how she had changed her name since she was in these parts.
“Was Mr. Ferrars in the carriage with her?”
“Yes, ma’am, I just see him leaning back in it, but he did not look up: he never was a gentleman much for talking.”
Elinor’s heart could easily account for his not putting himself forward, and Mrs. Dashwood probably found the same explanation.
“Was there no one else in the carriage?” “No, ma’am, only they two.”
“Do you know where they came from?”
“They come straight from town, as Miss Steele -- Mrs. Ferrars told me.” “And are they going farther westward?”
“Yes, ma’am, but they will soon be back again, and then they’d be sure and call here.”
Thomas’s intelligence seemed over. Elinor looked as if she wished to hear more. Mrs. Dashwood could think of no other question, and Thomas and the tablecloth, were soon afterwards dismissed. Mrs. Dashwood’s and Elinor’s appetites(胃口)were completely lost. They remained long together in a similarity of thoughtfulness and silence.
    24. What’s Elinor’s reaction at the news from the man-servant?
    A. She expressed mixed emotions. B. She burst out crying.
    C. She went pale from suffering a lot. D. She exploded with great anger.
    25. Why does Mrs Dashwood ask so many questions?
    A. She was only too curious about the couple.
    B. She wanted to find out who Mr. Ferrars married.
    C. She wanted to satisfy her daughters with her questions.
    D. She wanted to cheer her daughters up with the news.
    26. How does the servant sound when answering questions?
    A. Confident. B. Doubtful. C. Joyful. D. Scared.
    27. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Mr. Ferrars was not in the carriage at all.
    B. The lady the servant encountered was not Mrs. Ferrars.
    C. The Dashwoods would never see Mr. Ferrars again.
    D. The news upset the mother and daughter terribly.

A study by Harvard researchers found that mind wandering, or daydreaming, consumes an average of 47% of peoples’ waking hours. This brings about the question: If mind wandering is so costly to our well-being, then why in the world are we so willing to spend nearly half of our lives in this mental state?
Creative thinkers know, despite what their parents, teachers and school leaders might have told them, that daydreaming is hardly a waste of time. But unfortunately, many students learn to suppress(抑制)their natural instincts to dream and imagine -- instead, they’re taught to fit into a standardized model and to learn by the book, in a way that may not feel natural and that very well may suppress their natural desire to create. But as two famous psychologists recently noted, “Not all minds who wander are lost” -- in fact, the mind’s wandering is vital to imagination and creative thought.
Nearly 50 years ago, psychologist Jerome L. Singer established that daydreaming is a normal and indeed widespread aspect of human experience. He found that many people are “happy daydreamers” who enjoy their inner imagery and fantasy. According to Singer, these daydreamers “simply value and enjoy their private experiences, are willing to risk wasting a certain amount of time on them, but also can apparently use them for effective planning and for self-amusement during periods of routine task activity or boredom.”
Singer coined the term positive-constructive daydreaming to describe this type of mind wandering, which he differentiated from poor attention and anxious, obsessive fantasies. By making these important distinctions, Singer was able to highlight the positive, adaptive role that daydreaming can play in our daily lives, under the right circumstances.
    28. Who are aware that daydreaming is not a waste of time?
    A. Teachers. B. Parents.
    C. School leaders. D. Creative thinkers.
    29. According to the text, daydreaming is very important to ______.
    A. learning by the book B. imagination and creation
    C. suppression of inner desires D. instincts and amusements
    30. What does the underlined word “them” in the third paragraph refer to?
    A. Private experience. B. Circumstances.
    C. Fantasies. D. Happy dreamers.
    31. What is true of positive-constructive daydreaming according to the passage?
    A. It is a useful mental state. B. It is similar to poor attention.
    C. It is an anxious obsessive fantasy. D. It is a standardized model.
    D
There are so many rabbits across Australia that it may be surprising to learn that they are a non-native species. A few rabbits arrived with British settlers in 1788, but it was not until 1859, when a British-born farmer named Thomas Austin brought 24 European rabbits to his land for hunting, that they began to live there. They are an excellent example of an invasive(侵入的)species, a non-native species that does harm to its new environment.
Rabbits have lived well in many different environments within Australia, such as grasslands, coastal areas, farmland, and even in towns or cities. Their activities have destroyed crops and plants. They compete directly with other wildlife for food and shelter, including taking over burrows(地洞)of other animals. They have led to dangerously reduced populations of many plant and animal species.
Efforts to control the rabbit population have had mixed success. The first main effort was the Rabbit-Proof Fence. In 1901, the government started building a knee in the state of Western Australia to protect farmland from rabbits. By the time it was finished in 1907, the Rabbit-Proof Fence ran some 2,000 miles from north to south. The Acting Chief Inspector of Rabbits, Alexander Crawford, headed a team whose job was to go around keeping the fence in working order. But over time, the fence proved to be no match for the rabbits.
Other main efforts have included programs to destroy rabbit burrows or use viruses that sicken and kill rabbits. Again, these efforts have been less than successful. The big problem to any efforts to control the rabbit population is simply that their population grows so quickly. One female can have 30 young in a year.
If Thomas Austin had known the damage that the rabbits would cause across the country, he might have had second thoughts about bringing rabbits to Australia.
    32. Why did rabbits begin to live in Australia?
    A. They travelled there by chance.
    B. They were brought in by Thomas Austin.
    C. They were introduced by the government.
    D. They moved there to escape bad environment.
    33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A. Some activities of rabbits.
    B. Rabbits’ ability to live in the wild.
    C. How fast the population of rabbits grows.
    D. The damage rabbits have caused to Australia.
    34. How successful was the Rabbit-Proof Fence?
    A. It failed in the beginning.
    B. It didn’t live up to expectations.
    C. It was unfinished for lack of money.
    D. It failed later for nobody protected it.
    35. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Rabbits and farming
    B. Efforts to control rabbits
    C. Rabbits: experts in burrowing
    D. Rabbits: unwelcome newcomers

W: During the second half, you’ll need to be a lot quieter.
M: OK. OK. Hey, what’s wrong? Were you crying?
W: I didn’t find that scene funny. It reminded me of a fight I had with my friend Sarah on a trip to France. I haven’t spoken to Sarah since then. It was a lot like what we just saw, when the characters were at that dinner party.
M: The disagreement we saw on stage was full of humor and affection. I can see you really care about Sarah. You should give her a call. You’re as stubborn as Dad!
    W: I really miss Sarah!
M: After the play, why don’t you call her?

W: Thanks for coming to the studio today, Mr. Larson. Why don’t you tell me about your last position?
M: Well, I started working at Smith Electronics in Chicago right after I graduated from college. I was in the sales department, and even though I was good at it, I wasn’t really happy. After one year, I was moved to the HR department.
W: Was that a better fit?
M: Yes. I prefer talking to people face-to-face, and I enjoy solving problems. I did quite well in that position.
W: So, why did you leave?
M: I had been working at Smith for four years straight. Then I wanted to take some time off, so I went to Paris. My three-week vacation turned into a two-year stay!
W: Wow! What made you come back to the United States? And why is it a good time for you to join Branson Labs?
M: When my father started Branson Labs here in Los Angeles forty years ago, he wanted to pass it down to me. At my graduation dinner, I promised him that I would take over when the time was right. I’m finally ready to make good on that promise.
    Text 9
W: I have a special deal that says three drinks for the price of one. I printed it from your website, see? So, those three Cokes should only cost me $2, not $6.
M: Oh, I didn’t know about the deal. My mistake. I’ll adjust that right now.
W: I also have special deals for the soup, bread, and sandwich meat. They should all be cheaper.
M: For some reason, our system doesn’t show the deals when the item is scanned. I’ll have to type in the special deals by hand. One moment.
W: Thanks. I need to save all the money I can. I just got laid off.
M: I’m sorry to hear that, Miss.
W: I went to Harvard and studied business. I never thought I’d be out of work when I graduated.
M: I also work as an accountant for a technology company. We are looking to hire some new accountants in various positions.
W: Really? Wow, I guess it’s a good thing I complained to you about getting fired.
M: Why don’t you come by the company office? It’s at 3300 Main Street. How does 1:00 p.m. tomorrow sound?
W: Sounds great. I’ll see you then, and thank you for the opportunity!

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the winner of the 2018 song-writing competition. As you probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our annual spring competition held here in the beautiful Brook Theater. When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago, we had no idea how much it would grow. In 2017, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who participated doubled. It’s wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let’s clap our hands for Maryanne James! Maryanne, where are you? Please join me on stage! There she is! Maryanne, we loved the way you sang about everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we’d like to ask you to perform a song for our audience.
