The past year has been full of tragedies and tears, but we still have music一which can both reflect the times and lift us up when we're down. We picked three songs from Time magazine's Top 10 Best Songs of 2020.
    People I've Been Sad
“If you fall apart, then I'm falling behind you/ You know the feeling/ You know the feeling.” These words were written by Heloise Letissier as she grieved the death of her mother. A lot of people resonated with (和...产生共鸣) the lyrics in this troubling year. “It's a principle of acceptance of common suffering and of making peace with tragedy — and her open voice makes it nearly impossible not to how along.” Time wrote.
    WAP
WAP is a hip-hop song by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. It was Cardi B's fourth No.1 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 in the Us.
“As a track, WAP is simple yet effective: a juicy bassline(低音声线)... of Cardi and Megan trading verses(歌曲的段落), with barely a break to catch a breath. It is infectious.” Time wrote.
    Think About Things
This Icelandic pop song became popular on social media after a special quarantine(隔离) dance challenge set to the song spread rapidly.
“The song showcases parental love with a modern twist, making the song instantly palatable and attractive regardless of the song's meaning.” Maggie McHale wrote on At Wood Magazine.

I grew up in a poor family with a single mom addicted to drugs. Often there was no money for food, and I was always hungry.
On my fifth birthday, some close family members were invited to go to a park to celebrate my birthday. No cake. No presents. Except for my auntie, she had an envelope in her hand.
Before everyone sang Happy Birthday, I saw a little boy, probably my age, and a woman, digging in the park dustbin for food. I begged my mom to invite them to my party but my mother was not a fan of strangers. She said no.
I was attracted by them. I didn't know others struggled like me, and it hurt my heart. I watched them as everyone sang. I watched them when my auntie handed me the envelope. I watched them as I opened it until I saw the contents, a one hundred-dollar bill. My mother was enraged because my auntie gave me such a large amount of money. Maybe she thought my auntie trusted me more than her with cash.
We were poor. I didn't eat 3 days a week and I had a very hard childhood. But I had never dug in a dustbin for food.
My auntie kept talking it over with my mother. Finally, she told me I could do anything I wanted with that money. So I did. I walked to the boy and his mother. I explained to the boy that it was my birthday and my present was $100, and I wanted to give it to them. There were so many tears and thanks.
I, and my auntie, understood how powerful it was to give the only money I'd ever seen away. My mother never did. I paid dearly for the action that night. But it was worth it.
I think about that boy and his mother often.
    24. Why did the author's mother refuse to invite the boy and the mother to the party?
    A. She thought they were too dirty.
    B. She didn't like staying with strangers.
    C. She thought it was a waste of money.
    D. She didn't prepare enough food for them.
    25. Why did the author always observe the boy and his mother?
    A. He failed to join in his family's talking.
    B. He was curious about what they were doing.
    C. He was touched seeing them struggling like him.
    D. He was sad because his mom refused his invitation.
    26. What does the underlined word “enraged” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Admired. B. Delighted. C. Frightened. D. Annoyed.
    27. What can we infer from the author's behavior?
    A. It was worthless to pay such a high price.
    B. All his family supported his behavior.
    C. His kindness was more important than money.
    D. He had a deep effect on the boy and his mother.
    C
The Atlanta-based Coca-Cola company is cooperating with a Danish company to create a 100% recyclable soda bottle.
Plastic is one of the biggest polluters in our environment. And Coca-Cola was named the world's number one plastic polluter in 2020. It is the most frequently littered plastic bottle in 51 out of 55 countries!
While plastic is incredibly useful, it is also unfamiliar to Earth. The bacteria in the soil cannot degrade(降解) plastic back into carbon dioxide and water, because it cannot recognize the molecules (分子) in plastic. This is not the only issue. When plastic eventually does degrade, thanks to the sun, it releases greenhouse gas emissions and harmful chemicals into the environment, only worsening the climate issues already present.
Coca-Cola has finally responded to growing concerns, one of which is to replace the plastic bottle with a paper bottle.
Creating a paper bottle is challenging. The paper bottle must still follow the same safety standards as the plastic bottles. Another issue is the possibility of paper flaking into the liquid.
The first paper bottle will be tested in Hungary this summer. The bottle is made of a single piece of paper-fiber-based material instead of separate parts, which would weaken the bottle. Because paper cannot come into direct contact with the drink, a water-resistant plant-based coating is inside the bottle. There is no clear solution for the paper top yet.
Even if the paper bottles are successful, it will be some time before companies use them to replace cheap and easy-to-produce plastic. Despite this, Coca-Cola's steps towards sustainability are still steps towards a brighter future.
    28. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
    A. The uses of plastic. B. The trouble with plastic.
    C. The degradation process of plastic. D. The difficulty in degrading plastic.
    29. What do we know about the first paper bottle?
    A. It has a waterproof coating.
    B. Its separate parts will weaken the bottle.
    C. It will go into production before next summer.
    D. It is made entirely of paper-fiber-based material.
    30. How does the author feel about the future of Coca-Cola's paper bottles?
    A. Unconcerned. B. Doubtful. C. Promising. D. Disappointed.
    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Say Goodbye to Coca-Cola Bottles
    B. Coca-Cola Company's Contributions
    C. Plastic, a Threat to Our Environment
    D. Coca-Cola May Come in Paper Bottles
    D
Did you know that the current population of one-horned rhinos(独角犀牛) in Nepal is greater than it has ever been in 20 years?
In the latest count by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, the number of one-horned rhinos was 752, as compared to 645 in2015. The majority of the rhinos were found in Chitwan National Park. The species headcount took 1 month and required 350 trained forest managers to travel the park to count each individual rhino.
Nepal was once home to a thousand one-horned rhinos. However, political instability and large-scale settlement of people in the 1960s wiped out the population to a mere 100.The species was nearly extinct as a result of hunting, deforestation, and habitat loss.
Today, the one-horned rhino is extinct in Bhutan and Bangladesh, and 2,200remain in India and Nepal. The greatest threat to the species is hunting. The one-horned rhino is hunted by wildlife traffickers for its horn, which is traditionally used in some Asian medicines. However, there is no scientific evidence that suggests that the horn provides any health benefits.
Additionally, like other animals, the one-horned rhino suffers from disturbances in its natural habitat, which contributes to the decrease of the population. Natural causes and natural disasters also cause death on top of hunting.
The revival of this species resulted from several changes, including increased investments in habitat management, anti-poaching efforts, and the transfer of rhinos between habitats.
On top of these changes, the Covid-19 pandemic has enabled the growth of the population. Lockdowns prevented tourism, which allowed the habitats to come back to life and the animals not to be bothered by humans. However, several other conservation projects have been less successful during the pandemic. The drop in tourism has reduced funding for reserves in parts of South America and Africa.
Even as we celebrate the growth of the one-horned rhino population in Nepal, itis important that we learn the lessons to protect vulnerable and endangered species elsewhere.
    32. Which of the following best describes the headcount work?
    A. Boring. B. Dangerous. C. Effortless. D. Time-consuming.
    33. What is the main reason for the reduction of one-horned rhinos?
    A. Deforestation. B. Natural disasters. C. Hunting. D. Habitat loss.
    34. Why did the Covid-19 pandemic contribute to the recovery of the one-horned rhino population?
    A. It kept one-horned rhinos away from people's disturbance.
    B. One-horned rhinos weren't infected by the novel coronavirus.
    C. The government increased investments in their habitat management.
    D. Conservation projects were carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic.
    35. What is the purpose of this text?
    A. To inform good news of one-horned rhinos.
    B. To show the measures taken to protect one-horned rhinos.
    C. To introduce an endangered species—the one-horned rhino.
    D. To complain about the rise of the one-horned rhino's population.

Giving students music lessons won't just introduce them to a world of rhythm and melody, it could also significantly influence them in many ways. 36 The benefits of it are as follows.
It cultivates thinking ability. Scientists have discovered that reading music or playing an instrument helps develop students' thinking skills. The students who have excellent musical skills will stand out in the way of solving and problem analysis. Reading music requires the ability to use the same parts of the brain such as the implementation (实施) of mathematical thinking. 37
It develops physical skills. 38 For instance, drums are great for high-energy students. String and keyboard instruments, like the violin and piano, demand different actions from your right and left hands together.
39 Group classes require peer interaction and communication, which encourage teamwork. If a student is playing his instrument too loudly or speeding up too quickly, he'll need to adjust. It makes students aware of their individual part in a large music group. This can encourage socialising and teamwork.
It helps students learn to be patient. Learning an instrument teaches students to wait for a later reward. 40 Before you can make a single sound, you must first learn how to hold it, how to hold the bow, and where to place your feet. Playing an instrument teaches students to persevere through hours, months, and sometimes years of practice before they reach specific goals, which will surely make them become patient.
    A. It improves social skills.
    B. It enables students to communicate with others.
    C. For example, the violin takes a long time to learn.
    D. That is why many famous musicians are excellent at math.
    E. Learning to play this traditional musical instrument is easy.
    F. Students of all ages can improve their life with music education.
    G. Certain instruments require movement of the hands, arms, and feet.

William Allard is a photographer for National Geographic magazine whose pictures often appear in it. As Mr. Allard travels around the world, he looks for good photos to share.
All of Mr. Allard's pictures show interesting people and places. But one photograph of a young boy tending his sheep in Peru is different.
One spring afternoon, he was driving down the road. The scenery was so peaceful and quiet, and the fresh air was fragrant with scents, awakening all his cells to breathe them in. The sun cast a warm golden glow on his face. All these were enjoyable. Suddenly, he saw a little figure standing at the edge of the road .One more look and he noticed a boy crying. William pulled over and set the brake. He was told that another driver had come down the road and driven straight through the boy's dozen sheep. About half of them were dead. The driver never stopped. But William did.
The boy was nine or ten years old. His name was Eduardo. Eduardo's family depended on those sheep to earn money and he was responsible for them. Now he must go home and tell his family that half of their sheep were dead. However, he was frustrated to imagine the disappointed look on his parents faces.
William just took a few photos. He saw that Eduardo was very upset, but left quickly. He did not give the boy anything because he had nothing to give. He did not give the boy any money because it is not something he did when he was working. However, when he got back to his hotel, he thought about Eduardo, his dead sheep and his tears. He also thought about Eduardo's family. He realized what it would mean to lose that many sheep: the mountains of Peru can be a hard place to live and work.
    Paragraph 1:
As soon as William returned home, he spoke with the people at National Geographic magazine.

    Paragraph 2:
Thanks to the published pictures, William gave the money donated by readers to Eduardo's family.

As soon as William returned home, he spoke with the people at National Geographic magazine. He also wanted people to see what it's like in Peru for the poor people. National Geographic printed the pictures. William didn't expect what happened next. Readers from all over the world responded to the photographs and were very generous, sending in a lot of money.
    Paragraph 2:
Thanks to the published pictures, William gave the money donated by readers to Eduardo's family. Holding the money, Eduardo burst into tears. The money meant that they could survive. The family appreciated everyone who had helped them. With this money, Eduardo and his family replaced their sheep, had enough money to build a pump for the village and help the local school. Eduardo was also proud of his pictures which could improve a whole family's life. William made up his mind to help more people like Eduardo. Sometimes a small act could make a big difference.
