I can't stop thinking about the video of a 10-ycar-old girl facing her fears at the top of a ski jump. Her fear, her courage, her joy, her pride-the whole thing has really struck a chord (触动心弦) in me. Of course, the video makes me reflect on the times when I experienced the similar feelings. I remember how in those moments every cell in my body vibrated (颤动) with life. But it also reminded me of the times I didn't choose the more risky options.

I've always been a little bit of a chicken when it comes to my physical safety but I definitely pushed myself more when I was younger. Now that I'm a mom, I feel like I have to stay safe. I worry about what my kids would do without me and that leads me to make safe choices.

But as I watch this fourth grader overcome her fears, I think about how much this experience will mean to her in the future; she'll always have this as a reference point when she comes up against something scary or difficult. She'll be able to look back on this and say, “Well, I did that and the worst part was the bad feeling at the beginning.”

I know I want that view for my 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. I know I want them to take risks. Maybe not every day, maybe not ski-jumping, definitely not extreme sports, but I deeply hope that they will push themselves to their limits, facing down fear with whatever tools they can use and enjoying the great rush that comes from attempting scary things and getting to the other side of them.

So if I want that for my kids, I have to honestly look at my own relationship with risk and say that yes... I play it safe. And I have to ask myself another question: Am I doing enough? Or do I need to make some changes in-my life so that my daughter and son can be inspired to make their own brave decisions?

24How did the author react when watching that video?

AShe felt ashamed of herself. BShe realized that sport was dangerous.

CShe thought of her own past experiences. DShe regretted taking part in some risky activities.

25What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 most probably refer to?

AMaking safe choices is important. BTaking a risk isn't as scary as it seems.

CTaking a risk can make you feel bad. DOvercoming fears requires a long time.

26The author most probably thinks that she should ___________.

Alet her kids play with the girl in the video.

Bcertainly allow her kids to try ski-jumping.

Cuse some tools to practice her kids' courage.

Dparticipate in more risky activities to set an example.

27What would be the best title for the passage?

APushing ourselves to our limits BPaying attention to kids' activities

CLearning a kind of risky activity DEncouraging kids to choose what they like

    C

The great Swiss psychologist Jean used to lecture around the world, explaining how children’s minds develop as they get older. Once an American asked, “But Prof. Jean, how can we get them to do faster?” Today it’s no longer just impatient Americans who assume that faster brain and cognitive(认知的)development is better. Across the globe, both parents and policy makers eagerly push preschools to be more like schools.

A wave of new research shows, however, that this picture is far too simple. In 1998 a landmark series of studies looked at the long term effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on children’s growing up. ACEs include physical or emotional overlook or abuse, being poor, losing parent, violence or mental(精神的)illness in the home. Since the original studies, there have been hundreds of similar ones done across the world. It turns out that ACEs are disastrously common.

A new paper by Dr. Mackey, published in Nature Neuroscience Reviews, also concludes that. ACEs seem to make children’s brains grow up too quickly. Dr. Mackey suggests that frequently repeated bad experiences may have the worst speeding up effect, while more varied and unusual good experiences may be particularly likely to keep the brain open to learning.

Why would stress and disasters make us grow up faster and a rich, varied, nursing environment make us grow up more slowly? One influential recent idea takes off from the biological concept of “life history”. An animal’s life history includes how long it lives, how much it invests in its young and how long it takes those young to mature. A “live fast, die young” life history makes more developmental sense when resources are few and life is predictably hard.

In brief, a long, slow life history goes with a big, smart brain. All of this should be able to relieve the parents’ worries about “the American question”. Loving your children and giving them space to learn and explore is more important than designing a particular curriculum(课程).

28What can we infer from paragraph 1?

AAmericans are usually smarter than others.

BAmerican brain science is better developed.

CMost people believed children should skip preschools.

DMost people wish to develop their children’s brains faster.

29What is Dr. Mackey’ s opinion about speeding up children’s brain?

AIt leads to an early death.

    BIt may cause painful problems.

CIt is beneficial to academic learning.

    DIt originates from unpleasant environment.

30What does the author finally advise parents to do?

APush preschools to be more like schools.

BPut middle-high pressure on their children.

CGive children care and freedom to learn and explore.

DAsk teachers to design abundant curricula for children.

31What may be the best title for the text?

    ALive Fast, Die Young

    BFaster Development, Better Future

CAn American Question, the World’s Problem

DACEs, Key to Children’s Brains’ Development

    D

The right paint can add appeal to your walls and now it can also make them smarter. Researchers recently transformed a wall into an outsize trackpad and motion sensor by using low-cost conductive paint to create a large grid of electrodes(电极).

Such a smart wall can sense human touch and track gestures from a short distance. It can also detect where electrical equipment is and whether it is switched on. The technology could someday turn on lights when a person enters a room, track a player's motion in an interactive video game or monitor a child's television use. "Walls are everywhere, so why not turn them into sensors for smart homes?" says Yang Zhang, a computer science doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University. who helped to develop the concept.

To create the high-tech surface, Zhang and his colleagues applied painter's tape in a lattice(格子结构)pattern to a twelve-by-eight-foot wall, and then coated it with commercially available conductive paint. Removing the tape left a pattern of diamond-shaped electrodes, which the researchers connected using thin copper tape strips. Finally, they wired the strips to a custom-built circuit board and covered the wall with standard latex(胶乳) paint. The entire project took four hours and cot less than $200. In theory, Zhang says "Anyone can use the technique to make a wall smart. "

In the wall's appliance-detection mode, the power is turned off. The researchers detected iPads up to 6. 5 feet away from the wall; fans and floor lamps could be sensed from about 10 feet. Zhang and his colleagues presented the wall in April at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

"Engineers have long dreamed of technologies that blend into our surroundings, "says Christiar Holz, a research scientist at Microsoft Research in Redmond, who did not participate in the work. "It nicely questions our understanding of what a device might be and demonstrates how rich sensing technology can combine with everyday objects."

32What can a smart wall do now according to the passage?

ADetect people' locations. BTurn on lights automatically.

CTrack humans' movements at close range. DMonitor a person's television use.

33What can we learn about the smart wall?

AIt is easy to build. BIt benefits people in many ways.

C1t is cheap but tine-consuming. DIt adds appeal to the buildings.

34What materials are required to create the high-tech surface?

APainter's tape and standard latex paint.

BA lattice pattern and conductive paint.

CA custom-built circuit board and iPads.

DDiamond-shaped electrodes and copper tape strips.

35What is Christian Holz's attitude towards this new invention?

    ANeutral. BNegative.

    CPositive. DUnknown.

    第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。

There are numerous “secrets” out there on attaining success. The vast majority of these so called secrets all have one thing in common – Attitude.

     ___36___

The key to developing a successful attitude is to decide that there are certain things in life that you need, rather than merely want. For example, do you want a luxury house? _____37_____ Do you want fame and fortune in your career?

Sure, everyone wants these things. _____38_____ That is because it’s never enough to merely want something. You have to be the type of individual who feels that they need these things in order to survive. This gives you the motivation to work towards your dream and do whatever it takes – except, of course, for breaking laws or hurting people – to get there. And all this must be done with the “fuel” of a positive attitude.

How do you begin to change your attitude?

It is always useful to connect with useful resources outside us in changing our attitude for the better. _____39_____ Try to pay closer attention to your inner thoughts.

Realizing where negative thoughts come from can help us get to the point where we are able to erase them. Once they are erased, it is vital to replace them with more positive thoughts. ___40___

Perhaps your friends and loved ones will not understand the new you. But you can become a role model for them — and it begins by developing a positive attitude!

    AWhat do you need?

BDo you want a lot of money?

CWhat is the secret to Success?

DDo you find yourself constantly in doubt?

EHowever, the change will always begin inside you.

FProblem is, very few people are able to attain them.

GThis is how we begin to make an attitude adjustment.

    Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

Today I want to share with you my gains and pains during high school.

During these two years, I have grown up intellectually and socially. Through learning from the books within and beyond the curriculum, I have gained a deeper and better understanding of academic knowledge and different cultures. Also, I have learned to appreciate the kindness of others, especially my classmates who always reach out their helping hands. Besides, I have set aside enough time to participate in physical activities because I can benefit greatly from good health. However, I need to handle difficulties more maturely rather than being emotional.

From now on, I will not only keep exploring the charm of knowledge, but also make the best use of hardships to become a better me. I will keep growing and I will keep glowing.

    Thank you for listening!
