Inventors are always at work, dreaming up new technologies. Some inventions help us solve problems. Others make life easier, or more fun. Here, TFK(Time for Kids) presents 3 of our favorite inventions. See how they make us live a better life.

    Stopping Sickness

Christine Schindler is an engineer. She wanted to help stop the spread of foodborne illnesses. So she created PATHSPOT. It uses light to scan a person’s hands for harmful germs. Restaurant employees hold their hands beneath the scanner. Then the scanner judges whether they must be rewashed. About 100 locations have started using the product since it launched in May.

    Talking Eyes

For people who are blind or have other visual problems, the ORCAM MYEYE 2 could be a game changer. It might also prove useful for people with reading difficulties. Described as “talking glasses,” this AI device can be attached to any eyeglass frame. It can identify faces. It can also read text aloud. Fitting all this power into such a small device is like “putting an elephant in a small closet,” says Amnon Shashua, the inventor of the technology. Now the device can be bought online.

    Sport-safe

On November18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the world famous violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Lincoln Centre in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is not easy for him. He got polio(小儿麻痹症)as a child, and has to walk with the aid of two crutches(拐杖)now.

That night Perlman walked slowly to his chair. Then he sat down and began to play. But, suddenly, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it break---it broke with a loud noise. People thought to themselves, “He would have to get up to either find another violin or find another string for this one.”

But he didn’t. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had stopped. He played with such passion and such power. Of course, everyone knows that it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him changing and recomposing the piece in his head. When he finished, there was a silence in the room. Then people rose and cheered. We were all on our feet, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done.

He smiled and then he said in a quiet tone, “You know, sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can make with what you have left.” His words have stayed in my mind ever since I heard them. That is also the way of life. Perhaps our task in this quickly changing world in which we live is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left.

24Holding a concert is challenging for Perlman because ______.

AHe is just a world famous violinist

BHe has never performed on stage before

CHe has difficulty in moving his body

DHe is physically disabled as a result of a disease

25When Perlman had just begun playing, ______.

    AHe fell ill suddenly

BThere was something wrong with the violin

CAn accident happened and caused a disturbance

DA very loud noise arose from the audience

26If one of the strings suddenly broke, what would an ordinary player do?

    AHe would play another violin.

    BHe would cancel the concert.

    CAnother performer would play instead.

DThe concert would be put off.

27The lesson we draw from the story is that ______.

AWhat we have is more important than what is lost

BWe should not care about what is lost

CWe should make the best of what we have

DThe way of life is to always live with music

    C

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut —— A surprise awaited students in Yale who showed up for Professor Laurie Santos’s class. They got slips of paper that said, “No class today.” There was only one rule for the students ‘ unexpected free time——They were not allowed to study, but to relax. Since exams and papers were coming up, everyone was tired and stressed. At this moment they were touched. With around applause, nine students hugged Santos, and two burst into tears.

Yet, cancelling class was not just a break. It was also a challenge, as she was asking them to stop worrying about their grades, even if it was just an hour. One student went to the Yale University Art Gallery for the first time in her four years at Yale. A group of students went to a recording studio and played a new song. More people were outside, and more were smiling. That’s why about 1,200 students were taking Santos’s class, called “Psychology and the Good Life,” the largest class in Yale’s 317-year history. Even non-Yale students had the chance to take Santos’s class. It was offered as an online course and she immediately became an Internet hit.

Skyler Robinson, one of her students, was at a loss for a while about what to do during his break, and then decided to take a nap. “It was a great nap,” he commented. Santos designed the class after she realized that her students kept busy through long days that seemed far more depressing and joyless than her own college years. “They feel they’re in this crazy rat race. They’re working so hard that they can’t take a single hour off. That’s awful.”

The ideas behind the class are simple. Santos said, “It is the hope that science can help students find peace among all the stresses and difficulties they face at college.” The lessons include showing more gratitude, performing acts of kindness and increasing social connections. The students really wanted to learn to lead a happy life in a science -driven way. Santos also noted the psychological happening of “mis-wanting”, which led people to work towards the wrong goals in life.

One week, Santo asked students to exercise. Another week, she wanted them to get more sleep. They worked hard to keep some new habits. Social science research led to many new understandings of how people find happiness. She thinks her class can change Yale, or rather, not just Yale.

32How did students respond to the cancelling class?

    AThey expressed their concern.

BThey were at a loss what to do.

CThey showed gratitude to the teacher.

DThey were eager to study individually.

33How can we know Santo’s class was popular?

AFrom the attendence in her class.

    BFrom the subject she taught.

CFrom the long history of Yale.

DFrom the release of the online course.

34What can students learn from Santos’s class?

    ATo develop good study habits.

BTo let exercise become their routine.

CTo better understand how to find happiness.

DTo do something joyful during the stressful time.

35What can we infer from the text?

ASantos had a more stressful time in her college.

BStudents would be in rat race after Santos’s class.

CSantos’s influence can reach a wider range of people.

DSantos is going to cancel more classes for better effects.

Overall, most of my diet contains food that is good for my body, such as fish, eggs, and fruit. The fruit and vegetables I eat are full of vitamins and minerals.

However, I do have some bad eating habits. Frequently, I buy the grilled cold noodles on the street, which are delicious, but by no means healthy. Worse still, I have a hard time refusing sweets.

I should improve my eating habits by cutting down on desserts. I should also eat slowly and enjoy the food. And of course, eating a modest amount of food each time is a must.

Personally, a fundamental key to healthy eating is to follow a balanced diet, without too much or too little of any one thing. Most importantly, it starts with having a healthy attitude. It is up to us to make the right decisions about our diet.
