Basic First Aid Steps
First Aid for Cardiac Arrests (心搏停止)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the most important medical step of all. When a person's heart suddenly stops beating, do as follows:
● Ask someone to call an ambulance.
● Immediately start chest press regardless of your training. Press hard and fast in the center of the chest. Hand this task over to those who are trained if and when they arrive.
● If you are trained, use chest press and rescue breathing.
First Aid for Nosebleeds
Most of us have had a bloody nose at some time in our lives. The first aid for a nosebleed includes:
● Bend the body forward, not back.
● Hold the nose between the fingers just below the bridge.
● Check after five minutes to see if bleeding has stopped. If not, continue holding and check after another 10 minutes.
First Aid for Burns
The first step in treating a bum is to stop the burning process. Chemicals need to be cleaned off. Electricity needs to be turned off Heat needs to be cooled down with running water. For serious bums, you might need to see a doctor.
First Aid for Frostbite
Treating frostbite is a subtle step of gradual wanning. If possible, this should be done by professionals. You need to get out of the cold first. Small areas of minor frostbite may be rewarmed by skin-to-skin contact, but avoid using any heat sources or hot packs.
1. What should an untrained person do first for a cardiac arrest ?
A. Use rescue breathing. B. Do chest press.

My morning started out normally. Having hurried to complete chores, I raced out of the door for my mid-morning appointment.
By the time I finished my appointment, I was starving. I stopped at Moe’s Southwest Grill to order a pancake to take home and eat while working.
Since it was a little before noon, there was a line. A woman, who I soon learned was Marcella, was paying at the checkout counter. She asked the woman behind her in line if she would like a drink and then asked me. We both said no, and must have looked confused, because she said, “I got you.” She continued to pay for both of our meals even though we were strangers.
I asked Marcella why she did this, and she shared that someone once did something similar for her. The person asked that she pay it forward someday and she was making good on her promise.
Before I left, she gave me a warm hug and asked only that I do an act of kindness for a stranger when I could. I arrived home, but instead of working through lunch, I sat and reflected on her kindness.
It reminded me of two things: Firstly, focus on positive interactions instead of the negative ones. Secondly, if you’re able to perform a simple act of kindness, do it. Marcella didn’t need to pay for my lunch. But she did, and it brightened my day. She was kind — with no expectations of receiving anything in return.
As I have promised her, I plan on paying her kindness forward. Maybe, it make a small difference in someone’s life, and the ripple (涟漪)effect will continue, because that’s what being human is all about ——being kind ——even to a stranger.
4. Why did the author go to Moe’s Southwest Grill?
A. To find a job.
B. To buy a pancake,
C. To get a free meal.
D. To have an appointment.
5. How did the author feel when Marcella was paying for her meal ?
A. Excited. B. Moved.
C. Puzzled. D. Guilty.
6. What did Marcella advise the author to do?
A. To help those in poverty.
B. To reflect on her kindness.
C. To focus on positive things in life.
D. To hand kindness on to someone else.
7. What message does the author intend to convey?
A. Live your life to the fullest.
B. Keep your promise to strangers.
C. Be grateful to whoever helps you.
D. Do something good even for strangers.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. D

Did you ever notice how your favorite clothes lose their color and seem thinner with time ? Washing may be to blame.
According to a new study, clothes lose fewer dyes (染料)and fibers when washed in shorter cycles and in cool water. That means they will fade and thin less. These wash settings are greener, too— good for the environment.
As clothes are being washed in a washing machine, some of the fabric's fibers loosen and are washed away. Clothes also lose some of dyes that colored them and the dyes and fibers lost in the water will end up in the environment.
“There is some sort of environmental impact as to almost everything you do," says Lucy Cotton from the University of Leeds. Her research team put together two batches of clothes for tests. One had dark-colored T-shirts. The other had shirts in lighter colors. The team washed each batch in the same machine but used two different cycles. The first cycle lasted 30 minutes and used 25℃ water. The second cycle used 40℃ water and ran for 85 minutes.
After each cycle, the team collected fibers in the wash water and from an extra empty wash cycle afterward. They found that all shirts lost more color when washed in hot water in the longer cycle. Room-temperature water released fewer dyes than the hotter water did. The shirts also lost more tiny fibers in the longer, hotter cycle. Those microfibers matter because they give fabric its weight and strength. When the fabric loses too many microfibers, it will thin and weaken. Those microfibers will also pollute waterways.
And, just as microfibers add up to tons of waste, even small steps to cut waste will also add up. "Everything that you can do can make a difference," Cotton says, “even if it is something as simple as changing your wash settings."
8. What did the new study mainly indicate?
A. The benefits of washing clothes.
B. The frequency of washing clothes.
C. The problems with washing clothes.
D. The influence of washing time and water temperature.
9. What can we learn about microfibers?
A. They are useless at all.
B. They do harm to fabric.
C. They improve water quality.
D. They are bad for the environment.
10. What can we know from the team's experiment?
A. We should wash clothes as often as possible.
B. We must spend more time in washing clothes.
C. We'd better use cool water when washing clothes.
D. We need a proper washing machine when washing clothes.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Wash Quickly, Spend Less
B. Wash Properly, Pollute Less
C. The Research on Microfibers
D. The Way to Prevent Clothes Fading
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. C 11. B

Briefly, music puts you in high spirits, which makes you better at studying - but it also distracts you, which makes you worse at studying. So if you want to study effectively with music on, you can try to reduce how distracting music can be, and increase the level to which music keeps you cheerful.
You may have heard of the Mozart effect -- the idea that listening to Mozart makes you “smarter”, which is based on research that found listening to complex classical music like Mozart improved test scores in mathematics. However, further research eventually debunked the Mozart effect theory: it had not really anything to do with maths; it was really just music that puts you in high spirits.
However, music can be a distraction under certain circumstances. When you study, you’re using your “working memory”--- that means you’re holding and handling several bits of information in your head immediately. The research is fairly clear that when there’s music in the background, especially music with vocals (歌唱 部分),your working memory gets worse. Likely as a result, the reading comprehension ability is reduced when people listen to music with lyrics. Music also appears to be more distracting for people who are introverts (内向的人)than for people who are extroverts, perhaps because introverts are more easily overexcited.
Aiming to figure out the relative effect of these two competing factors — spirits and distraction, researchers had participants do a fairly demanding comprehension task, and listen to classical music which was either slow or fast, and which was either soft or loud. They found poor performances only occurred when people were listening to music that was both fast and loud.
To sum up, research suggests it’s probably fine to listen to music while you’re studying. But you’d better consider if the music puts you in high spirits, if it’s neither too fast nor too loud, if it’s less wordy, and if you’re not too introverted.
12. What does the underlined word “debunked” in Paragraph 2 mean ?
A. Disapproved. B. Developed. C. Examined. D. Proposed.
13. Which of the following can affect our working memory more seriously ?
A. Rapid rap music. B. Background music.
C. Fast piano music. D. Soft absolute music.
14. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Spirits are vital to task performances.
B. Slow music can easily lead to distraction.
C. Fast and loud music isn’t fit for comprehension tasks.
D. Soft music is more suitable to introverts than extroverts.
15. What does the text mainly talk about ?
A. The right choices of music while studying.
B. The benefits of listening to music while studying.
C. The main ways of enjoying music while studying.
D. The influences of listening to music while studying.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. C 15. A

Good morning, everyone!
The other day Mr. Wang asked me to collect the problems in our English writing, and now I’m honored to say something about the survey I did.
Our problems mainly lie in three aspects. Some of us aren’t clear what to write, thus leaving out some key points. Also it’s common that many classmates make spelling mistakes. However, there’ re more students failing to use appropriate verb tenses.
To improve our writing, we must do more drills both in vocabulary and grammar, writing every sentence correctly. And before each writing we should think well, knowing the requirements of the writing topic.
Through the survey not only do I know my weak points in writing, but also I find some classmates whose excellent writings are worth learning. Thank Mr.Wang and my classmates.
