After months of expectation and secrecy, the official mascot (吉祥物) of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games — a giant panda-inspired cartoon character — made its first public debut with cheers at Beijing’s Shougang Ice Hockey Arena.
The panda is named “ Bing Dwen Dwen ” in Chinese. Bing means “ ice ” in Chinese, while Dwen Dwen suggests “ health and cleverness ” — characteristics also shared by pandas. Pandas are perhaps the most recognized animal species in China, organizers said.
“Pandas combine China’s traditional culture and its modern appearance together with winter sports elements in a fascinating image that shows our great expectations for the Games and shows that we welcome the world, ” said Beijing Mayor Chen Jining, who also serves as an executive president on the organizing committee.
“I have already seen the mascot and from what I’ve seen, it’s a wonderful choice, ” IOC President Thomas Bach said before introducing the character. ” “ The mascot really takes in the best elements and characteristics of China and the Chinese people. It will be a great ambassador for the country and the 24th Winter Olympics. ”
The ring of light surrounding the mascot’s face is suggestive of ice and snow tracks, as well as the flowing “ ribbons (丝带) ” of the National Speed Skating Oval. The oval is one of two new competition sites in downtown Beijing expected to become a landmark of the Games, according to its chief designer Cao Xue.
The introduction of the mascots marks the key point of a journey that began in August 2018, when Beijing organizers started a global design competition for the mascots. A total of 5,816 designs were received from 35 countries, and were reviewed by Chinese and international experts in a comprehensive evaluation and selection process.
The new mascot will serve as spirited symbol of the Games that will take place in the three zones of downtown Beijing, the suburban district of Yanqing and co-host city Zhangjiakou in surrounding Hebei province.
21. What does Thomas Bach think of the mascot?
A. Surprising. B. Entertaining. C. Satisfying D. Puzzling.

It’s nice to feel like a hero or to be the centre of attention every once in a while. Walking barefoot down the worm road, cheered on by the villagers of Bradstone, one would have thought that I should feel full of pride and joy. Those feelings might have been nice, except for this one tiny fact: I had no idea where I was heading, even when I heard my name being shouted out upon entering the village.
Earlier, after painfully recovering consciousness beside the road, the only important things I could remember were my name, Jonathan Grey, and a horribly uncomfortable feeling that I had forgotten something which could result in life or death. So I had followed the road. Shortly I noticed that I had somehow also lost track of my shoes.
I had ended up in Bradstone. Many villagers hurried over and screamed my name. One older woman particularly threw her arms around my waist. “ You made it! I knew you were special,” she cried, “My baby is finally home! ” At a loss for words, with no idea what to do, the best I could offer the crying woman was to put my arms around her, too. When she settled down, she pulled back to look at me properly. “How are you? Really? Oh, you will have to report to Mr. Fredrick first… ”
I was not sure how to answer the woman’s — my mother’s? — questions, so I decided to be honest. “I’m sorry, but I’m not sure who Mr. Freddrick is, or what I must report to him. ”
My mother took a deep breath, then took my hand to lead me into the house. “ Your father will be home soon, so get settled in. I’ll be outside if you need me. ” Taking one last look around, my mother let out a sigh. For the time being, home this would have to be. Breathing deeply, I gathered my courage and mentally prepared myself for what was now my new life.
24. What can we know about Jonathan?
A. He enjoyed the welcome he received. B. The villagers were very sorry for him.
C. He had never been the centre of attention. D. The villagers knew who he was.
25. What happened to him when Jonathan recovered consciousness?
A. He felt relieved. B. He was in pain.
C. He forgot his name. D. He regained his memories.
26. Why did Jonathan hug the crying woman?
A. He would not let her go. B. He recognized his mother.
C. He didn’t know how to reply. D. He was glad to have found her.
27. How did Jonathan feel at the end of the text?
A. He tried to make his mother pleased.
B. He was worried about meeting his father.
C. He was uncertain if he had the courage for a new life.
D. He decided to temporarily accept the present situation.

Notpla is a London-based firm that makes a seaweed-based substitute for single-use plastic packaging. Although some of Notpla’s products are suitable to be eaten, they are designed to be dissolved (溶解) after usage. The company’s film wrap is made of seaweed lining instead of a conventional plastic-based coating. This makes the film fully biodegradable and ideal for use as packaging for cupboard and bathroom supplies like coffee and toilet paper.
According to the United Nations, 331 million kilograms of plastic garbage is produced annually around the world. Roughly 60% of the estimated 9.15 billion tons of plastic produced since the early 1950s has been taken to landfills or abandoned outdoors.
Plastics harm the water, the air, and our bodies. Many experts agree that single-use plastics are unnecessary and dangerous. Some governments and towns in the United States have taken action. New York has banned most plastic shopping bags, while plastic straws (吸管) have been banned in Miami Beach. Overseas, India stated in August that it plans to put a wide ban on single-use plastics this upcoming summer, with the European Union already implementing this ban.
Seaweed comes in a variety of species and can be harvested or farmed. Notpla uses plants that have been farmed. Rodrigo Garcid Gonzalez and Pierre Paslie, the inventors of Notpla, initially considered seaweed as a solution to the world’s plastic problem for several reasons. Seaweed is abundant and grows quickly. Additionally, it doesn’t compete with land crops and is highly favored for its ability to remove some waste products like carbon from the atmosphere.
In cooperation with the online food ordering service Just Eat, the startup recently tested its product. Last year, the two companies handed out 30,000 takeaway boxes at various UK restaurants. Plans are in the works to offer the boxes across Europe in 2022. Notpla’s team intends to replace single-use plastic in the supply chain more generally as they scale. The company recognizes the difficulty of such a job given the volume of plastics consumed around the world.
28. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 2?
A. By comparing facts. B. By giving examples. C. By raising questions. D. By presenting figures.
29. The underlined word “ implementing ” in paragraph 3 can be replaced by ______ ?
A. lifting B. applying C. opposing D. protecting
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The wide use of seaweed. B. The next goal of the new study.
C. The advantages of choosing seaweed. D. The huge market of the plastic bags.
31. What does the company think of its plan to replace the whole single-use plastic?
A. It will be totally unpractical. B. It will be richly rewarded.
C. It will be rather successful. D. It will be really challenging.

Failure is probably the most exhausting experience one ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding. We experience this tiredness in two ways: start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue.
In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it is either too boring or too difficult. 32 Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first. 33 Using my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (字母) order and I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.
34 Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that we fail again and again. Years ago, when planning Encyclopedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its article. Nothing like this had ever been done before and none of the solutions that I came up with worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable. Mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why the problems cannot be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. 35 An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind and proved correct at every step.
36 Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing. Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.
A. This feeling finally weighed me down.
B. Hard as I worked as before, I felt no fatigue.
C. Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle.
D. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.
E. Feeling relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
F. I once was asked to write 102 essays on some famous authors.
G. I racked my brains day and night and wrote the essays desperately.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Three years ago, I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist in a new dental clinic at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush-driving to a new and unfamiliar clinic and getting accustomed (适应) to the different rules and clinical environment.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new setting, I removed my three rings: my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was an anniversary gift from my husband. I wrapped them in a tissue and placed them beside my computer.
During my lunch break, I noticed the wrinkled tissue and thought that it did not look very neat and dropped it into the rubbish bin. I went about my duties and my day went on well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive and efficient.
Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that I had lost my rings. I felt the heat in my body rise, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm down. I felt sick to my stomach and I had that sinking feeling in my heart. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to follow the track of my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few contact numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she informed me that the bins had already been collected.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my most treasured rings — my mother’s wedding ring. Had it not been for my carelessness, all this would not have happened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there rooted in my chair, praying to God for my unforgivable guilt.

Dear fellow students,
The Covid-19 epidemic is becoming serious again and Chinese people are working together to fight against it. However, some unpleasant phenomena shouldn’t be ignored. Some people deliberately give false reports about their trips and take terrible attitude to medical staff and volunteers. Faced with the current situation, we students had better behave as follows.
Firstly, be responsible for ourselves and others. We ought to respond to the appeal from the government and stay at home as much as possible. If we have to go outside, report our trips honestly. Secondly, show respect for those who come to help us. When meeting problems, try to keep our head and put ourselves in their shoes.
Let’s work hand in hand and do what we can. We believe that night will go off and tomorrow is another day.

第二节(满分25分)
After two hours or so, I received a most amazing phone call. My clinical leader excitedly told me that someone had found my rings and returned them to the reception desk. Surprised and relieved, I was moved to tears and asked my leader to hand the phone to the kind person. I expressed my gratitude and promised him a well-prepared gift for thanks. However, he immediately refused and hung up the phone. And my following calls to express my kind reward turned out to be in vain.
I decided to thank the wonderful person face to face. After my leader persuaded him to stay, I hurried back to my clinic. On my arrival, I pushed the door, and a cleaner, wearing dirty overalls, stood there. After giving me my treasured rings, he told me how he had found them. When he classified the rubbish, a tissue unfolded with three rings falling out caught his attention and made him think how important these meant to the owner. I bowed to appreciate him again and finally he left. I looked at him, with respect and appreciation.

M: Then I’ll do the grocery shopping tomorrow.
W: I’d like to go to the grocery store with you.
M: Sure. How about tomorrow around 4:00 p.m.?
W: That works for me.

W: Ralph, do you collect anything? My brother Jim likes collecting coins. Our grandfather used to do it. My brother started after he died.
M: Yes, I actually collect autographs from famous actors and actresses. Do you have a collection, Kelly?
W: I have a little collection of old computers. I think they are not worth much, though. My brother’s collection could be sold for a lot of money. He has some rare coins.
M: I don’t think I have any valuable autographs, but I still like them a lot.
W: What’s your favorite autograph? I would love to get an autograph from Chris Hemsworth. I loved him in the Thor movies!
M: My favorite autograph is from Marlin Brando. I met him at a restaurant once. I really want to get an autograph from Tom Hanks, though. He is the best actor and I love all of his movies.
W: Oh yeah. He is great. The movie Forrest Gump is one of my favorites.

All right, everyone, listen up. We are going to read over the new employee forms that were sent to us. I hope you are all enjoying the free lunch we were given, but please remember I need your full attention. This is important.
I will begin with our new rules on being late. If you are late to work, then we will put a mark against you. The second time it happens, you will have to talk to the management. The third time it happens, you will get a fine. However, if you are not late at all for the year, you will receive a gift during our holiday party.
Next, our customers have asked that we make a magazine about our products, because they think our website is confusing. We will work on fixing that, too. We will also offer lower prices if the customer buys four times from us in a year.
