Have you got any gadgets hanging around your home that you no longer want or use? Between us, we have millions of bits of tech stockpiled in drawers that could be given a new lease of life.
Part of the problem for our unloved gadgets is that many become obsolete quickly because their software doesn’t get updated. Other items are left unused because they’ re broken or they’ve become replaced by a fancy new version. Many of these items are electronics, but despite them appearing to be past their sell-by date, they don’t need to end up in landfill. And here are some tips for you to make the most of our unwanted gadgets.
    Recycling is the obvious solution
Materials used to make them can be extracted and reused in other things. As an example, Elisabeth Ratcliffe from the Royal Society of Chemistry told the BBC: “There are about thirty different elements just in a smartphone, and many of them are very rare. ” These can be used in touch screens and solar panels.
    Repairing is the best approach
Probably the best approach to our throwaway culture is to repair our broken tech. This takes patience and skill, which can be learnt at repair clubs and repair cafés—free meeting places where you’ ll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. In the UK, the interest in mending our stuff and giving it a new life is reflected by the popularity of a TV series called The Repair Shop, where craftspeople rescue and resurrect items their owners thought were beyond saving.
    Upcycle is a final option
You can breathe new life into unwanted stuff by transforming it into valuable pieces or collectable retro items. These could be sold on, meaning you can make some cash from your junk and create much needed space in your home!
    21. Which of the following isn’t the reason for the problems of unwanted gadgets?
    A. Their software doesn’t get upgraded B. They are substituted with senior versions
    C. They need to end up in landfill D. They may have passed sell-by date
    22. In which way can you make some profit from dealing with thrown-away gadgets?
    A. Recycle them B. Repair them C. Upcycle them D. Reuse them
    23. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. How to make our gadgets last longer
    B. How to protect environment better
    C. The ways to use gadgets effectively
    D. The problems of unwanted gadgets
    B
Maria and her parents moved to the US from Brazil one year before the pandemic(流行病). Better education opportunities lay ahead, and they were excited to get Maria into an American high school to prepare for college.
Each parent got a job, and Maria started studying. She also signed up for a service club because she wanted to meet people, practice her English and be a part of the community. “I love to serve, ” Maria says. “I think it is my thank-you for the opportunities I have. ”
She worked at the local food bank with other kids of her age, organizing bags for families who were having a hard time making ends meet. But when the pandemic hit, she found herself at the food bank for another reason: to bring home groceries to her parents. “We were all shocked when my mother lost her job. My friends at the food bank got me through it,” Maria said.
Luckily, her father kept his job. And with classes moving online, Maria was able to secure a full-time job and do her class work at night. Three of her courses were college prep classes that demanded a lot of work. During her senior year, Maria worked 40-hour weeks and studied even more. Yet, in her spare time , she packed food bags for others before taking hers home.
Just before graduation,Maria came into the food bank. One of the volunteers started getting a bag ready for her. “I don’t need one today,” Maria said. “My mother got a job. I’m here to help. ”

Are you a movie-goer? If, like me, you’ re a fan of film, then there’s no better place to watch something than on the big screen at the cinema. You enter the dark auditorium and take your seat, ready to be entertained. But while you enjoy yourself in some movie magic, many others are now getting their film fix at home.
Over the last few years, cinemas have seen a revival. Customers have been attracted by comfortable seats, and lots of choices of things to watch. Multiplexes in particular can screen up to twenty films at the same time, catering for all different tastes. In addition, 3D and even 4D movies can give the audience an extra immersive experience.
So, why are people reluctant to make a trip to the cinema? One answer to that question is its lack of convenience. Rather than going out, it’s so much easier to stay in and watch an action movie on a high-definition TV screen via a streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. There’s plenty of choice, and it’s relatively cheap as well. But, personally, I find there are too many distractions, and watching at home is not such an event. I miss the trailers too!
But the corona-virus pandemic has put the future of cinemas under the spotlight. Some have had to close because of reduced ticket sales. And in the UK,it’s brought about a boom in TV watching and online streaming, according to media watchdog, Of com. It also found that half of UK adults will keep and continue using their new streaming subscriptions.
This isn’t great news for cinemas. The rely on the release of a big blockbuster to bring the crowds back, but the launch of new films, such as James Bond: No Time To Die, are being delayed. And Disney has released its $200m blockbuster, Mulan, online instead of in movie theatres. But John Fithian, from the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Variety magazine: “This idea of waiting out the pandemic to make your movies more profitable doesn’t make sense to me. There won’t be as much of an industry left to play your movies in if you do that. ”
    28. Why does the author ask such a question in the first paragraph?
    A. To show the challenge cinemas are facing
    B. To describe how popular movies are
    C. To share some personal preference
    D. To introduce the topic of the passage
    29. What service have cinemas rarely provided to the consumers over the past few years?
    A. Some cozy seats to enjoy B. Multiple optional movies to watch
    C. An extra immersive experience D. Much convenience and low cost.
    30. What may not be a barrier for the development of cinemas according to the passage?
    A. The release of some blockbusters is put off or shown on line.
    B. The corona-virus pandemic has led to less ticket sales even some cinemas’ bankrupt.
    C. Multiplexes can screen up to films of different styles at the same time.
    D. TV watching and online streaming are gaining more popularity
    31. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of cinemas?
    A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Subjective. D. Indifferent.
    D
The scientist who created the world’s first known genetically modified babies, stunning the global scientific community, has been sentenced by a Chinese court to three years in prison, state media reported.
He Jiankui said in November 2018 he had engineered twin girls, offspring of a healthy mother and an HIV-positive father, to be resistant to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, using a nascent gene-editing technology called Crispr-Cas9. His revelation drew immediate condemnation from bioethicists and fellow scientists in China and beyond, including the inventors of the gene-editing technology. Chinese authorities said in January they were investigating Dr. He, and he was fired from his post as an associate professor at Southern University of Science and Technology, based in the southern city of Shenzhen.
On Monday, a Shenzhen court convicted Dr. He and two others on charges of illegally practicing medicine related to carrying out human-embryo gene-editing intended for reproduction, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. “In order to pursue fame and profit, they deliberately violated the relevant national regulations , and crossed the bottom lines of scientific and medical ethics, ” the court said, according to the report. Dr. He also received a lifetime ban from working in the field of reproductive life sciences and from applying for related research grants, Xinhua said, citing local health and science authorities.
Gene editing of embryos is taking place for research purposes in countries including the U. S. and the U. K. , in lab settings. Scientists have said they are unaware of any current efforts involving gene editing of embryos for implantation and birth. But policy experts and scientists expect it will happen.
China doesn’t have a law, and although a 2003 guideline prohibited the genetic manipulation of human embryos, it didn’t outline penalties. In February, China’s National Health Commission drafted new rules governing “high-risk” biotechnology, including gene-editing, that would introduce criminal charges and lifetime research bans if breached, but they have not come into effect. The commission is trying to create suggested guidelines and advice for scientists, clinicians and governments regarding human embryo gene editing. Some countries, Dr. Dzau added, might eventually conclude that human genome editing in embryos is acceptable under certain circumstances such as preventing lethal disease, and move forward. “Then it is up to each country,” he said. “Some decisions may be culture-dependent. ”
    32. Which of the following about Dr. He is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. He was condemned by bioethicists and fellow scientists at home and abroad.
    B. He was the first to have created the well-known genetically modified babies.
    C. He once worked as an associate professor in Southern University of Science and Technology.
    D. He was the only one who was convicted on charges of illegally practicing medicine for reproduction.
    33. Why did Dr. He violate the relevant national regulations?
    A. China doesn’t have a law to regulate gene editing of embryos
    B. He tried to cross the bottom lines of scientific and medical ethics
    C. Guidelines governing “high-risk” biotechnology will come into effect.
    D. He hoped to pursue fame and profit by commercializing gene editing of embryos.
    34. Which of the following best explains “breached” underlined in the last paragraph?
    A. violated. B. observed C. affected. D. created
    35. One can probably read the text from ______.
    A. a fashion magazine B. a culture brochure D. a celebrity biography C. a news report

A girl, called Selina, lost her arms in a traffic accident that caused her father’s death--who was the main source of support for the whole family. 37 For the sake of caring for her, her elder brother became her shadow , never leaving her alone for years. Except for writing with her toes, she was totally unable to do anything in her life. Then one day, her elder brother wanted to live his own normal life, and they had no choice but to separate. The girl complained to the TV host about her uncertain future at being left on her own, but the boy was full of enthusiasm for his life. 39 The girl wrote: My elder brother’s arms are my arms. However, the boy wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.

The concerns of the people are what I always care about, and the aspirations of the people are what I always strive. Having been worked in the countryside myself, I know precisely what poverty feels like. Thanks to the sustained efforts of the Chinese people from generation to generation, those who once live in poverty no longer have to worried about food or clothing, or access to education, housing and medical insurance. Realization of a prosperous society in all respect is what the CPC has delivered to our people, but it is also a contribution to the world. To ensure that everyone leads a good life than ever before, we must never rest on that we have achieved, and there is still a long way to go. To accomplish our great mission, we must always remain truly to our original aspiration. Let us all work together for a sharing future. May our country enjoy prosperity and our people live in peace and harmony?

W: Hello, Finn. Sorry, I’m not actually going in to the office today. I’m taking care of my niece.
M: Oh, what a sweet baby!
W: Isn’t she adorable? You know, I’m thinking about becoming a full-time babysitter!
    M: Oh, really?
W: Hang on, Finn. (To the baby) Time for your bath, little one!
M: But Feifei, you don’t actually want to change your job, do you?
W: Well, I enjoy my job. But sometimes, you know, it can be very stressful. I feel like a change...
M: Really? But you’re so good at your job! Know how you love completing projects. And we’d all miss you so much.
W: I know. But dealing with babies is so much easier.
M: Well, just don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, Feifei.
W: What do you mean? I know how to take care of a baby. Why would I throw her out?
M: Sorry! “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” is an English idiom which means: “Don’t lose something valuable while we’re getting rid of something else that we don’t want”. So I was talking about your job, Feifei. Just because you find it stressful -that’s the thing you don’t want-don’t stop completely and lose what’s valuable.
W: Ah, I see. Thank you, Finn.
    Text 10
Tropical rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate, and according to a new report by Rainforest Foundation Norway, humans are to blame. Tropical rainforests once covered 14. 5 million square kilometers of Earth’s surface, but now, just one-third of that remains intact. Of the original area tropical rainforests once occupied, 34% is completely gone and 30% is suffering from degradation. All that remains is roughly 9. 5 million square kilometers, and 45% of that is in a degraded state, the report says. Researchers blame human consumption for the loss. While agriculture has always been a driving factor of rainforest loss, the report says that energy consumption, international trade and the production of soy and palm oil, logging and mining have been the largest threats over the past century. Tropical rainforests are home to more than half of the Earth’s biodiversity and have more carbon in living organisms than any other ecosystem. Along with supporting significant animal life, tropical rainforests are also essential to slowing down global warming. The researchers also believe that the loss of tropical rainforests puts the whole world at risk of future pandemics.
