(2021四川宜宾) A Chinese saying goes that “Firewood, rice, cooking oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are the seven necessities to begin a day.” Without doubt, tea is welcomed all over the world. According to the UN, tea is more than just a hot drink. It’s a big part of many cultures around the world.
You possibly know that people in China use top-grade tea to show respect when receiving important guests. Meanwhile, the British tradition of afternoon tea is an important part of that country’s identity. Making Malaysia’s pulled tea has become a sort of art form. As an expression of Moroccan hospitality (好客) and tradition, mint tea—a mix of green tea, spearmint leaves and sugar—is served during gatherings.
Apart from its cultural meaning, tea is also a medicine, used from ancient times to modern days. Li Shizhen, who was a Chinese Ming Dynasty herbalist, once said, “Tea is cold and lowers the fire.” The health benefits of tea are still being discovered today: preventing heart disease, obesity and cancer have all been linked to drinking green tea, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the US.

To forgive is a virtue(美德), but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
How should you start to forgive? Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology(道歉). Many times the person who hurt you does not mean to apologize. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming fiends again with the person who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
Try to see things from your offenders angle(角度). If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness fear and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender's point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge. It can rob you of your self-confidence if you don't do it.

Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254. When he was 17, he travelled along the Silk Road with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. Finally, they arrived in Beijing. They were guests at the Emperor's Palace. Although Marco was young, he was very clever and could speak four languages. The Emperor was impressed by him and they became friends. The Emperor asked Marco to help him and sent him to do many important jobs all over the country.
Marco was amazed by how great China was. He was impressed by the Emperor’s Palace which he described as “The greatest palace that I’ve ever seen”. The walls were covered with gold and silver and the hall was so large.
Marco was also attracted by lots of strange things in China. Marco was surprised to see Chinese people using paper money in the markets. In Europe, people paid for goods with gold and silver. He could not understand how people paid for food and valuable things with paper! He was also puzzled by the black stones people used to burn to produce heat. The black stones were coal, but Marco had never seen coal before!
After he served the Emperor for 17 years, in 1291, Marco returned to Italy. He had a lot of money then. A writer wrote down all the stories that Marco told him in a book called The Description of the World, which became one of the best-selling books in Europe.

Exams are a fact of school life for most people. Almost everyone worries about them and feels stressed, although they have prepared well.
A little stress caused by the exams is useful as it can sharpen your mind and motivate(激发)you to do well. But too much stress can stop you working to the best of your abilities, so its important not to let it get out of control. Here are some ideas to help you.
The keys to being prepared for exams and avoiding unnecessary exam stress are knowing what you need to know, planning and preparing for your revision(复习), and giving yourself enough time to do it.
If you can, find a copy of the syllabus for each subject. This tells you what you need to know and gives you the topics for revision.
Make a week-by-week revision timetable chart to display in your work space. Include the topics you need to cover for each subject.
About 12 weeks before your first exam, record the dates and times for each of your exams in your planner or diary and make a copy to put on your wall at home.
During your exam period you want your brain to work at its very best, so build in relaxation time before bed, avoid late night revision sessions and try to go to bed early so you get enough sleep. If panic(惊慌)starts to creep in, try to replace your negative thoughts with more positive(积极的)ones, such as 'It's going to be OK? If you have difficulty answering a question, leave it and move on to the next one—don't spend time tying yourself in mental(思想上的)knots over each question.
You are not alone while dealing with the stress. Call psychological(心理的)hotline to share your worries and get help from others going through the same experience. Remember that there is life after exams. Things may feel stressful right now, but it won't last forever. And then the rest of your life will still be there.

Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay, and the chance for guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in another country to study or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the north of Pakistan, in the Himalayan mountains The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely beautiful. You can go for long walks and swim in the rivers but there are no shops, cinemas or cafes.
Kate and Julian Foxton
Our two-bed house is by the sea in the south-west of England. It is about five minutes' drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and forests and it is very quiet We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for sports like surfing, kayaking and mountain biking. However, the houses here are expensive, which can be a problem for local people. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without a car.
Chafic and Aline Halwany
Our home is near the centre of Beirut, Lebanon, one of the largest cities in the Middle East There are lots of cafes and restaurants, which open late at night. We love it here because it's so friendly and you can always find what you need—lots of people come to stay to learn Arabic and French. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is quite a lot of traffic during the day.

(2021江苏扬州) Reading is fun! You can also analyze texts(文本) to learn more from the texts and about the texts. One way you can do this with fiction books, passages, or poems is by exploring their themes.
A theme is a central idea running throughout the text, connecting the characters and events. The writer may express his or her thoughts about humanity or a worldview through a theme, Themes can be ideas like friendship, bravery, love, honesty or family. Make sure you know what the writer is saying.
Sometimes, themes are hard to find out. First, the theme may not be able to be included in just one word like the examples above. There may also be more than one theme in the text. What's more, some themes are not presented in the words directly. You have to use clues in the texts to find them.
To start exploring the theme, first you need to make sure you've read the whole text. Since themes develop over time, you can't fully understand the underlying themes until the end of the text. Then, ask yourself to sum up(概括) the text and try to work out a “big idea”. For example, did many characters resolve problems with their families? If there was only one small problem with a character’s family, then "family" might not be the theme of the text. Finally, after finding out a “big idea”, go through the text to find examples that support this idea. You needn't repeat every detail of the story— a few key examples will be fine.
Now you are ready to explore the theme of a text!

(2021四川成都)The Arctic is home to over 21, 000 kinds of animals and plants. Two thirds of it is the Arctic Ocean. In winter, it is completely covered with sea ice. In summer, nearly 50 percent of the sea is ice.
It's also home to about 4 million people, a group of whom are Inuit. Jim is an Inuit boy. At 6:30 am, he wakes up and gets ready to go to school in his fur coat. It keeps him warm in the freezing weather. Half an hour later, he gets to school on a ski or snowmobile. Some of his friends go by car instead. At 11 :30 am, it's time for lunch. There's fish and other meat in his lunchbox. He sometimes eats them uncooked. These foods give him enough energy. Besides local food, some people eat Western food. At 5:00 pm, the snow outside makes everything bright, so he wears snow goggles on his way back home, or his eyes may be hurt badly by the strong light. From December to March, the sun never rises. However, it always shines in the sky during the summer. At 10:00 pm, he goes to bed. Sometimes he stays in an ice house called igloo. I looks cold but it's warm inside. Many local people live in houses made of wood.
The Inuit mainly make a living by hunting and fishing. Now, their life is greatly influenced by climate(气候)change. For example, many animals they hunt for food are disappearing. There is less food for the reindeer they keep, too. They face more terrible weather, such as snowstorms. Hunting becomes more dangerous. Hunters may accidentally fall into water if the ice becomes too thin. Actually, the temperature in the Arctic is 18℃ higher than it was 125 years ago. All Arctic ice may disappear during the summer in less than 100 years.

“According to Happy, these are the world's only invisible fish, and they're especially good pets because they don't need any food. Once a year, the female Ghost Fish lays eggs. Immediately after that, and if everything is completely quiet, she becomes visible. But in a blink (眨眼) of an eye, she's gone again. "Not at all, "Grandad said. "His customers were completely satisfied. Many people told him that they got great pleasure from their invisible fish. It was so relaxing. A few even claimed that they had seen a female Ghost Fish, and it was truly unforgettable. Yes, Happy was a clever man, "

A Frenchman, Niepce, needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera in 1826. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography (摄影术) was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing.
In 1840, photography was developed once more. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. But the photographers had to carry many machines.
With the development of science and technology, a Chinese young man, Wang Mengqiu, invented Hover Camera (无人相机). It can record people and things more wonderfully. He once studied at Stanford University in the United States. He became famous overnight because of the invention.
Hover Camera records movements with a 13MP camera and takes 4K videos. You can use a smartphone to control it. It can follow you, flying or staying in mid-air. In this way, it can get the perfect pictures. It is the best choice for weddings, sports games and holidays because Hover Camera is convenient for the users to carry. It can be folded, so it can be put into a small bag. When the power is low, it can land safely.
In the future, cameras will be designed better and better. People can take more lively photos and videos.

How would you feel if you received a large amount of money all at once?
That’s exactly what happened to Nkosikho Mbele, a worker at a gas station in South Africa. His sudden luck was brought about by an act of kindness he did for a young woman-Monet, a company manager.
One day, Monet stopped at the gas station to refuel (加油). But when Nkosikho was about to serve her. she realized she didn't have any money or cards on her. She immediately tried to stop him. Knowing about her trouble, Nkosikho decided to pay her gas bill of about R100 ( $7) to make sure that she could travel across the highway with enough gas.
“Madam. I’ll pay for you so that you won’t run out of gas on the road. Whenever you are near here again, you can just give me back the money,” Nkosikho said. As for him, the R100 was almost all he made in a day. He had to support a big family. He needed the money very much. He wasn’t even sure if Monet would come back to return his money, but he still volunteered to help her.
Several days later, Monet came back with his money and a box of chocolate. She was so thankful that she also ported their story on the Internet. Great changes took place. Nkosikho became famous in his town. Many people were moved by his act and offered to raise money for him. Nkosikho received around $24,000, as much as about his salary (薪水) of eight years. His boss also heard of his kind act and decided to give him a rise in salary.

Rice is one of the most commonly eaten basic foods around the world. Buying it and cooking it is a daily matter. Yet for many, its presence has been a matter of life and death. It is a main food because it is easy to grow, besides low cost and convenience. A poor community in the developing world may find it difficult to bring in foreign fruits or raise cattle for meat, but it can almost certainly use the land it has in order to grow plenty of rice.
This was the great achievement of Yuan Longping, who passed away on May 22 this year. A great Chinese scientist, Yuan successfully developed what is known as “hybrid rice” which can produce up a 30% higher output. Yuan Longping was born in the year 1930, a time when China was very different. It was a nation, without modern industry, depending on the rice which they grew. The first few decades (十年) of his life were met with major social events, and a rapidly growing population that made food supply not last all the time. This experience left its mark on Yuan Longping, which made him focus on (关注) farming science and work on his research of hybrid rice.
His achievement would see the rice supply in China increasing from 56.9 million tons in
1950 to 194.7 million tons by 2017. By 1991, 20% of the world’s rice output came from hybrid rice, even if only being planted in 10% of fields.
Always remember, human development begins first with the most basic and sample things, such as developing rice. We should be thankful for scientific thinkers like Yuan.

Once upon a time, there was a boy who was out playing on the beach with his friends. While they were playing, the boy found a stone which looked strange. It wasn't the same as other stones. Farmer Pak Sadiman has made it his task to do something about Central Java’s water shortage problem, little by little.
He has changed his dry village into a place rich in ground water by planting trees on nearby land for the last 19 years, and he is encouraging others to join in, too.
Sadiman realized that the land was in need of some water when the Gendol River— previously (以前) the source of water for villagers — was quickly drying up. Even rubber trees, the local people’s main source of income (收入来源), were so dry that they could no longer produce rubber latex (橡胶乳). It was then that Sadiman took action so that his children and grandchildren could take advantage of the planted trees,
“Banyan (榕树) trees, unlike rubber trees, can keep groundwater. The more banyan trees are planted, the more clean water villagers will get,” he thought. Although he went through a hard time, the farmer never became discouraged from achieving his goal — providing his village with a clean water source.
He’s planted at least 11, 000 trees over the last 19 years, and his village seems to have escaped from the dry season, Villagers have joined in Sadiman's efforts and worked alongside him to plant the trees. “Pak Sadiman is our hero. This village used to fight with water shortage, but now we have enough water because of him,” said the head of the village.
Sadiman said as long as he’s healthy, he’ll continue to plant trees to help provide clean water for his villagers.

Screen-Free Days
I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders. Jokingly, I said to the group, “What do you think if we go a week without using our laptops or smartphones?”
They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr. White. They would be too much.” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering single screen-free days. Even that idea left them feeling upset.
According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off, they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”. Others have designed something completely new.
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape(密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important.
While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.
34. How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day?
35. Why have the teachers come up with the idea of screen-free days?
36. What fun activities can the students have at school?
37. How did the students feel after the first screen-free day?

Many of us read news every day. It is probably because we’d like to know what’s happening in the world. Today we can get news from TV or the Internet, but how did ancient people get news?
At the very beginning, information spread by word of mouth. People living in tribes (部落), got news from neighbors or travelers. Ancient Romans changed the way people knew about their communities. They posted a list of daily happenings at public squares in the cities. Ancient Chinese people did it in another way. The government had news sheets sent to officials in the whole country so people could know what was going on in the capital.
The fifteenth century saw big progress in printing technology in the west. The progress brought a sudden rise of news business. Printers sold whatever people loved to read. In the sixteenth century, the first real newspaper appeared. People started to form the habit of reading newspapers. They liked to share their opinions on newspapers. The invention of telegraph (电报) machines led to another big step in history. News stories were sent to the papers in minutes instead of weeks.
Now we get news in seconds from all over the world. We can become some kind of reporters by posting online what happens around us.

Dear Mum and Dad,
I’m very happy to spend some time with Lingling's uncle in Hunan province, and I’m having a wonderful time here in Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area. It’s very large, about 390 square kilometers, and it's a magic land of mountains, forests and rivers. It's famous for the strange shape of its all rocks.
Last night we camped by a small lake. During the night, I heard a loud noise, as if someone was laughing. I woke up Lingling and her uncle, and I asked them what the noise was. Lingling’s uncle told us not to worry, and left the tent to find out what it was. After a few minutes, he told us to come out quickly. Then he pointed into the forest. It was a monkey. When it saw us, it jumped up into the trees and went back into the forest.

Huge Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than Expected
Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean. Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased, however, some of the ice has begun to disappear. Scientists have discovered huge waves in the arctic waters.
The waves were discovered by accident in May, 2010. Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.
The ship travelled east and stopped next to a large block of ice around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen. Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.
“We were ready to go but when I went out, I discovered many cracks around,” he remembers.
He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went, he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones. Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.
Within an hour, Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship’s navigation system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour. Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.
The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waved or depend on sea ice to protect them. Wildlife like polar bears that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger.
Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in icy waters. As waves break up ice, seas will be more open, waves will be stronger. There are stormy times ahead.

Aunt Jia had a snack stand (摊位) in our neighborhood. Her snacks never failed to satisfy my stomach. What’s more, she was always patient with her customers. Even COVID-19 didn’t influence her business.
One day, during the last Spring Festival, I saw a large family visiting her stand. It formed a heart-warming picture: Each family member was enjoying being together. As they were leaving, I noticed Aunt Jia felt a bit sad.
I was amazed. In my experience, she was always smiling. I went forward and ordered my favorite snack. When she was wrapping (打包), I couldn’t help saying, “Happy New Year, Aunt Jia! Why don’t you take a break?” Aunt Jia looked surprised, but she soon replied, “Happy New Year! I love working here in this city. It’s too cold and snowy in my hometown.” I became more curious (好奇的). “Where do you come from? Aren’t your family waiting for you to come home for the celebration?” Aunt Jia stopped for a few seconds. “They sure are.” She answered gently. “But I have to stay here. (2021湖南岳阳) Have you ever taken traditional Chinese medicine? Do you like its taste?
Some people dislike it because of its bitter(苦的) taste, but more and more people are becoming interested in traditional Chinese medicine for the reason that it's an effective way to cure(治疗) illnesses. For example, if you have a sore throat, you could drink hot water with Gancao.
Chinese people have been using traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Before the western medicine appeared in China, Chinese doctors went to the mountains to pick herbs(草药). Then they made the herbs into Chinese medicine soup to cure patients. When we talk about Chinese medicine, we always think of Li Shizhen, one of the most famous doctors in ancient China. He used to travel in the countryside with a bag of herbs and cure patients. He spent 27 years writing Compendium of Material Medica(《本草纲目》).
In 2020, COVID-19(新型冠状病毒) hit China and many other countries. Ever since then, traditional Chinese medicine has played an important role in the fight against COVID-19. It's reported that 91.5% of the COVID-19 patients in China received the traditional Chinese medicine
treatment (治疗), and it worked well on more than 90% of these patients. In September, 2020, ZhangBoli was honored as "the People's Hero" for his contributions(贡献). Zhang shared the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine like Lianhua Qingwen with foreign doctors.
In a word, traditional Chinese medicine is the treasure of China.

A two-week-old baby hippo sat alone on the bank of the Zambezi River in Zambia, a country in Africa. His mother was dead. The morning sun rose and with every passing minute he lost more strength. Without his mother, the baby probably wouldn't make it through the night.
Luckily, Ian Stevenson and his friends saw the baby hippo. They took him back, fed him milk and eggs. The young animal was saved and soon doubled his weight. He seemed happy and healthy.
Later, the hippo, now called Douglas, was moved to an ideal home at Chipembele, a wildlife center owned by Anna and Steve Tolan. They built a sleeping place for Douglas by a pool where he liked to swim. They fed him every three hours. Douglas enjoyed playing with the Tolans' pet dogs and swimming in the pool. Sometimes at night, other hippos came from the nearby river to eat grass. With the development of science and technology, communications are becoming easier and quicker now — people can use telephones, cellphones, fax machines and the Internet. It means that we seldom write letters now. But a TV show, Letters Alive (《见字如面》, is bringing back this old habit.
Letters Alive invites famous actors and actresses, but there are no funny jokes or different competitions. Instead, only one person walks up to a microphone and reads a letter. "Every letter opens another world for us," said Guan Zhangwen, the director of the TV show. “It seems that we can experience the real lives and feelings of the writers".Since its first episode was on. Letters Alive has been widely praised. Many audiences(观众) say that it has provided a breath of fresh air to today's TV shows.
Besides Letters Alive, some other cultural TV shows have also attracted Chinese audiences. It suggests that cultural values and true feelings are becoming our interest.

(2021·湖南湘潭中考) What does taking the train mean to you? Perhaps it’s just a way of getting to your destination(目的地). In fact, the train itself can be part of the fun.
On March 28th. China’s first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu in Sichuan for Zunyi in Guizhou. It soon became the talk of China with its special design and comfortable service.
Its inside and outside are decorated with giant panda pictures. Attendants (乘务员) carry panda toys and passengers can try panda-shaped food and Sichuan snacks. Some people call it a mobile star hotel because it has a bar, karaoke dance hall, and mahjong(麻将)room.
This luxury(高档的) service is one aspect that has attracted travelers. But train travel interests people for other reasons.
In the fast-paced times we live in, travel is a good way to slow down. It gives you time and space to read, sleep, chat with friends, or simply do nothing but watch the changing scenery outside.
One surprising thing is that you might meet new people. Sheng Yawei, 26, once took the longest railway in the world— the Trans-Siberian Railway in the world. Sheng met a Russian student and they became friends. “ I also met a cute boy who gave me melon seeds(瓜子). Though we didn’t understand each other's language, it made me feel nice.”

As an exchange student, I studied in France for two years. The first time I took a class in the chemistry lab, I was surprised to find that students were fully "armed". Everyone was wearing goggles ( 护目镜) and gloves. Safety comes first for science lab class.
My chemistry teacher Mrs. Louise usually gave us the instruction paper the night before the lab class and let us read it. During the class, she first went over the steps and then put us into groups of two to do the experiments (实验). What was special was that for every lab class, Mrs. Louise changed everyone’s lab partner to make them work with different classmates.
The class was often filled with laughter and screams (尖叫). We once tried to burn the chemicals and watch the colors of the flames(火焰). Different chemicals produced different colors of flames, including bright orange and dark green. Many students in my class were surprised. "Wow! That's so beautiful!" they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures, posted them online and sent them to their friends. Mrs. Louise didn't get angry with us at all for our "noises". She herself even took photos with us!
After finishing an experiment, we had to write a lab report. If we had a big mistake in the experiment, we needed to analyze (分析) why it happened and what we should do to avoid it next time. The lab reports were very important. They made up around 25% of our term grade.

Eyes always on us
Video cameras are everywhere; schools, theatres and stores. But in recent years, they have entered our homes. Many parents set up cameras at home to watch their children's online classes and homework. Are cameras really helpful? What do students think about it?

Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and watch videos instead of studying. This affected my studies and made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me.
It worked. With the camera watching, I had to do my homework first and make plans for studying at home. When I was alone at home, the camera made me feel safe because I knew that my parents were watching on the other side. My grades improved after a year.
Zhang Hua
When I was in Grade 8, my parents set up a camera in my room. I really didn't like it because I felt like there were always eyes watching me. I felt so uncomfortable that I couldn't sleep well at night
Knowing there was a camera around when my friends came to my home, they would speak quietly and carefully. We couldn't have pillow fights. I was sad. So I asked my parents to take the camera away They agreed it as long as I promised to behave well. I feel happy and free now.

(2021四川宜宾) Have you ever counted the number of digits (位) in your mobile phone number? 51 You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That’s because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?
52 Each has a different meaning. The first three digits tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is registered. And the last four digits are random.
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. 53 But as mobile phone users grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999. Eleven digits can be used to create tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. 54
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. 55 Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the shortest in the world. They use seven digits.
A. We once had 10-digit numbers.
B. Your number has eleven digits,
C. But short numbers are easy to remember.
D. The 11 digits can be divided into three parts.
E. So they can’t create as many numbers as we can.
F. That’s enough for each of us to use 7 or 8 phone numbers.

The Value of Negative Results
We all avoid failure(失败), and most of us fear it. However, without failure, progress would be impossible. What does success usually come after? Failure. It seems that one cannot exist(存在)without the other.
Accepting failure is not easy for many, though we are often unwilling accept failure because our professional fame depends on success. 73 In the past ten years, for example, some scientific magazines have published reports of failed tests. It is believed that scientists can learn from "negative(负面的)"results and that this can finally lead to positive results.
__74 The ABN AMRO bank started an Institute (机构)of Brilliant Failures to learn more about what works and what doesn’t in banking. Eli Lilly and Company had failure parties to study the drugs(药物)that don't work.
In fact, one of the business world’s most famous failures became one of its biggest successes, in part because the product’s makers learned from their mistakes. 75 The product, though unique(独特的)at the time, was expensive and heavy; besides, some of its most important features(特点)didn’t work properly. As a result, Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, believed in the product and he began to find out ways of improving it. In time, this led to the production of the iPhone and the iPad, two of the company’s most successful products.
76__________ Not only should we try to learn from it if we want to succeed, we must also be persistent(执着的). Though Apple stopped selling the Newton in1998, the first iPhone wasn't available until 2007. It took a lot of research and hard work to go from the Apple Newton to iPhone but in the end, the effort became successful.
All in all, there is a lot we can learn by studying mistakes. Perhaps the most important lesson is that failure and success are two sides of the same coin. 77._______________
A. One truly cannot exist without the other.
B. We are brave enough to face difficulties.
C. In the early 1990s, Apple created a phone called the Apple Newton.
D. The business world already understands the value of negative results.
E. The Apple Newton has won popularity with people all over the world.
F. However, things are slowly changing, especially in business and science.
G. The story of the Apple Newton can teach us an important lesson about failure.

Read these tips, and don’t get fooled by fake news!

3. 14
Look to see if the story you are reading is on other news sites that you know and trust. If you do find it on many other sites, then it probably isn’t fake(although there are some exceptions).

The invention of barcodes(条形码)is based on a very simple idea. We only need to give each product a specific number and print it. 1 We could simply print the number itself. But this can cause problems. For example, an unclearly printed "seven" could look like a "one" to a computer. It's also true for "three" and "eight". _ 2 _ We need a better way of printing numbers so that they can be read correctly at high speeds. That's the problem barcodes solve.
Each number in a barcode is shown by seven blocks of the same size. 3 For example, the number "one" is shown in turn by two white stripes(条), two black stripes, two white stripes, and one black stripe. 4
A barcode includes different parts and each one provides a specific meaning. The first part of a barcode tells you the country where the product was made. For example, 690—692 is the barcode for China. 5_______ The final part is about the product itself. This is how barcodes work.
A. Then computers can read it directly.
B. All information can be shown by barcodes.
C. The next part tells you who produced the product.

Teenagers need 8- 10 hours of sleep a day because they need lots of energy to grow into their adult(成人的) bodies. Grown-ups usually need 6-8 hours of sleep to keep active. 53________ That is why old people sleep less than young people.
Interesting facts

55________
It's not just people that love to snooze(打盹). In fact, many animals have unusual or surprising sleeping habits. Some animals, such as bears and hedgehogs, sleep all through winter. What will the world of tomorrow look like? Many people today believe that technology is going to help solve some of the most difficult problems we have on Earth today. New technology may solve old problems, and it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect. Each has advantages and disadvantages, as these three examples.
When we dream about the future, many of us think that we will be able to fly to the skies in our own personal flying car. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, if the cars become popular, there will be problems with traffic control.
3D printing is another new technology for the future. 3D printers are already used to make life-size models of car parts, and man-made body parts, such as ears. As we move into the future, 3D printing will change the way we make things and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such a machine is very expensive.
Finally, people are trying to build a robot suit(套装). This is an electronic suit. It allows people to lift heavy objects and walk a long way. It might help people walk again after an illness or an accident. However, one disadvantage at the moment is cost.
Looking ahead, it is easy to imagine a future. We will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Although there are some problems to solve before all of this is possible, we can certainly dream of a world. In this world, technology makes people’s life easier and safer. It can solve some of the most difficult problems we have today.

(2021山东菏泽) Poverty(贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary(平凡的) people play a big role in the fight. Here are two of them.
After graduating from Beijing Normal University in 2016, Huang Wenxiu gave up the chances to work in big cities and returned to her hometown of Baise in Guangxi and served as the village's Party chief. A total of 418 villagers were lifted out of poverty thanks to her efforts. Unluckily, she died in a flash flood at the age of 30 while driving back to her village in Baise. She was given the title “role model of the times” by the central government.
When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield (产量) was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capita income(人均收入) reached 12, 670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.

Self-love is the most important if you want to find out your full potentials(潜质) on earth. Accepting who you are makes you feel that you are good enough.
You are good enough does not mean you are perfect. Nobody is perfect. Being good enough means you accept who you are and believe in yourself. The truth is, opinions of other people make it hard for you to find the good part of yourself. So, 73 you need to believe in yourself instead of caring what people think of you. Be sure you are doing it for yourself, not for someone else. Just make efforts to improve yourself and then you are sure to become the best you can be, or a better version(版本) of yourself.
What should we do when someone is stuck(深陷) in the ocean of not feeling good enough? Here are some suggestions to help. First, be a good listener. Listening to someone will not only make them feel they are worthy but also make you know better what they are going through. Then you will get the idea of how to cheer them. Besides, always encourage others. When people talk about their dreams, tell them it’s possible that all dreams can come true. So, loving others in this way will make them feel good enough.

Peter: Let’s welcome Henry, the camp leader of the most popular summer camp in our city to Peter’s Show!
Henry: Thank you, Peter!
Peter: Henry, why did you open up a camp?
Henry: Ten years ago, I spent three weeks at a summer camp and had the best time of my life. I remember every day I was there, and I still have friends from then. So, I decided I wanted other children to have the same experience as me.
Peter: 1
Henry: Well, after I left school, I worked at a few summer camps. I wasn’t a camp leader then and I didn’t get any money for it, but I learned what a good leader needs to do. So, when I opened my own summer camp seven years ago, I was ready to become a camp leader. Since then I’ve organized lots of unforgettable activities. The kids love it.
Peter: 2
Henry: Actually, it’s easy to make such a decision. I will think about what kids want to learn from a summer camp. They want adventure and exciting activities. They want to go home and say “You won’t believe what I did!” So, extreme sports were the best idea.
Peter: 3
Henry: Kids have been coming to my camp for many years now, and I hardly hear any kids or parents complain (抱怨). The only problem I have is when there are too many kids who want to join. I have to tell them to come back the following year. Of course, they aren’t very happy with the news.

Getting English Language Learners to Put Down the Books and Have Some Fun
Even if there’s so much about English that can be learned from a book or even in a traditional classroom setting, a lot of the language can still be learned best in more relaxing situations where students are having fun. Here are some suggestions.
★Communicate with strangers. If you live in an area filled with English speakers, get students out of the classroom. 71 Students may not speak to strangers, but they'll hear conversations taking place and may begin to understand how the words learnt in the classroom are actually used in everyday speech.
★Let their guard down. One difficult thing for learners is confidence (自信) when they speak English. Fun activities, especially those outside of the classroom, give students a chance to feel relaxed. 72 It may take a bit of time at the beginning, but once students get into it, they’ll start to get confidence.
★Make use of English media (媒体). Most recorded language instruction is pretty boring and it can get tiring hearing the same voice repeat the same phrases. 73 They will hear common expressions and more everyday conversations in the movie. If they’re not sure about something they hear, it can turn into a more formal lesson once back in the classroom.
★ 74 Casual (随意的) conversations give learners the chance to hear or use English in situations. They can talk all they want about expressions to use while dining out or informal words to use with friends, but it takes a trip to McDonald’s or a picnic in the park for many of those expressions to truly set in.
A. You can let students go to a movie in English.
B. Put them among other English speakers.
C. They may hate to speak English.
D. Hear or use English in situations.
E. They will speak more freely.

(2021·山东枣庄)第三节 读下面的一篇文章, 在答题卡的 56~60 每个题目下做简单的笔记。(共5 小题;每小题2分, 满分 10 分)
Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people (“Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school. ”)However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year's resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you—will you make any next year?

Does my goldfish know who I am?
I think this is a great question. I do spend my days 48 (study) how fish go about their lives. First of all, fish are much smarter than people think. People often talk of goldfish having three-second memories, but in fact they can learn all kinds of things, and remember them 49 quite a long time.
This shouldn't surprise us too much. Just like other animals, they can find enough to eat, and 50 (know) when it is safe to be out in the open. Being able to learn and remember things helps 51 (they) do this.
Many kinds of fish can tell one from another, according to their group, their relatives, 52 even their own eggs. But fish live in 53 very different world from us. For many kinds of fish, although seeing is important, 54 (sense) such as smell and touch are even more important.
So, does your fish know who you are? I believe your fish will 55 (sure) know when it is feeding time. My own fish become very 56 (excite) when my hand appears near their tank, even before I drop the food in. I'm not sure that your fish will be able to remember what your face 57 (look) like, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it could remember you in other ways, perhaps by the sound of your footsteps as you walk towards the tank.
