The high school entrance exams (中考) for Chinese Junior 3 students are mainly about academic (学术类的) subjects, such as math and Chinese. But starting from 2022, they will be tested in areas like music and art.
On Oct 16, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said that fine arts will be included in high school entrance exams in more provinces and cities by 2022. Twelve cities in six provinces have already started the practice, including Nanjing and Qingdao. The scores for these subjects are from 10 to 40 points.
This is being done to encourage primary and secondary schools to provide more fine arts classes. They should cover subjects such as music, painting, calligraphy (书法), dance, drama and opera, The Paper noted.
“Aesthetic (艺术的) education is not just about teaching students how to paint, sing or dance – it’s about the ability to appreciate artistic beauty, which is very important for students’ mental (心理的) health,” Fan Di’an, president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, told China Daily.
However, the change has caused heated discussion. Many students and their parents worry about this new policy will bring too much extra (额外的) work. They think that since students already have heavy academic workloads (压力), adding new testing material would make things worse.
It was also pointed out that not every student would be talented enough to be good at these subjects. “It’s really hard for tone-deaf (五音不全的) people like me to remember melodies (旋律). So I need to do extra practice before music tests,” Zhao Hanfang, a 15-year-old student from Yunnan, told newspapers. “So if music is included in the high school entrance exams, I might be too much stressed.”
In response to (作为对……的回应) this, Jiangsu authorities said that the tests would be based on basic knowledge that comes from the students’ textbooks. But China has done a good job of dealing with it. On Feb 25, President Xi Jinping announced that China has made a “complete victory” in its fight againstpoverty, which was one of the goals listed in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20). It has also met the poverty reduction goal listed in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule, Xinhua reported. This has paved the way (铺平道路) to promote higher-level rural development during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, as well as achieve long-term goals through 2035.
China has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary people and good partnerships (合作) play a big role. President Xi honored role models and places in the fight. Here are three of them.Zhang Guimei, 64
Principal of the Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Lijiang, YunnanBorn in Heilongjiang province in 1957, Zhang traveled to Yunnan at the age of 17. She has been helping girls pursue (追求) education for more than 40 years.
As a teacher, Zhang was heartbroken when she saw her students quit school (辍学) after finishing senior high school. It was possible for many of them to go to college. However, they couldn’t do so because their families couldn’t afford it.
So in 2008, Zhang started a free school for poor girls. Since then, Zhang has been busy asking for donations to provide money for the school. She has convinced (说服) parents to send their daughters back to school. The school has sent more than 1,800 students to universities and colleges.Mao Xianglin, 62Village head of Xiazhuang village, Wushan county in Chongqing In 1997, 38-year-old Mao started to work as the Party secretary (党支书) of his village. Around the village are 1,000-meter-tall cliffs (悬崖峭壁), and there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. It took villagers three days to walk to the nearest town. Mao decided to build a road.
“We can’t stay poor forever. I’ll lead us as we try, even though it will be hard,” Mao said.
He led more than 100 villagers to build the road with their hands. They hung from ropes and used hammers and drills (钻) to create the road. Falling rocks led to the deaths of six villagers.
It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. But their work has improved people’s lives. It now takes just one hour to drive to the nearest town.
Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield (产量) was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online.
By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capita income (人均收入) reached 12,670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.Minning town
Yongning county, Ningxia Hui autonomous regionHave you seen the hit TV series Minning Town (《山海情》)? It tells the story of people who move from mountains in Ningxia to build new homes on the plains (平原) in the 1990s.They learn to grow mushrooms from experts from Fujian. Some of them go to Fujian factories to make money. In the end, they get rid of poverty.
The show is based on a true story. It is a good example of China’s “pair-up” practice. In 1997, Fujian and Ningxia paired up as partners to fight poverty. The name Minning comes from the short nicknames for Fujian (Min) and Ningxia (Ning). Since the work started, Fujian has sent 183 officials and around 2,000 experts in science and technology, education, and medical care to Ningxia, according to the local government.
The population of Minning grew from 8,000 to 66,000. In 2020, the per capita yearly disposable (可支配的) income of its people reached nearly 15,000 yuan. 阅读完成表格 Model examples in the fight against 1.___________ AchievementFactsMao Xianglin* By the end of 2019. 2.____________had been lifted out of poverty. * He led over 100 villagers to build a 3._________* They spent 4._________ years building it. Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) announced that they have found more than 500 cultural relics (文物) in six pits (坑) at the site, which dates back over 3,200 years. The relics include bronzeware (青铜器), gold and bronze masks, ivory, jade (玉器) and textiles (纺织品). The Sanxingdui Ruins, which were first discovered in 1929, are believed to be the remains of the ancient Shu Kingdom. The kingdom was a center of civilization (文明) along the upper reaches of Yangtze River. In 1986, archaeologists discovered two pits that they believed were used for sacrificial ceremonies (祭祀仪式). At that time, over 1,000 artifacts were found, including bronzeware, face masks and “divine (神圣的) trees” - bronze sculptures of trees. The discovery of Sanxingdui raised an important question about the origins of Chinese civilization. The ancient Shu civilization that built Sanxingdui is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Chinese civilization. The site, along with the Liangzhu and Shijiahe sites along the Yangtze River, shows that the birthplace of Chinese civilization might not have been only along the Yellow River Basin (流域) in north China. The newly-discovered relics are similar to those found in 1986, as they also include divine trees and bronze masks. They further support the idea that the pits were used for sacrificial purposes.New kinds of cultural relics have also been dug up. For example, experts found two square zun (尊), a kind of ancient bronze jar (罐子) that was used for holding water or wine. They also found cong (琮)-a jade artifact commonly found at the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins in Zhejiang province. “These artifacts show that the Sanxingdui site had a close connection with Central China, but it also marks an original ancient civilization (in Sichuan) with strong creativity,” said Chen Xiandan, a member of the excavation (发掘) project.1. What do we know about the relics that were recently found at the Sanxingdui Ruins?A. They are made of gold. B. They were all found in the same pit.C. They were created about 3,200 years ago.D. They were used for sacrificial ceremonies in 1986. 2. What does the word “artifacts” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. The remains of a building. B. Ancient ceremonies. C. Historical objects.D. Bronze sculptures. 3. The discovery of Sanxingdui shows that Chinese civilization _____.A. started earlier than was believed beforeB. might have several different origins C. was centered along the Yangtze River D. developed from the ancient Shu civilization4. What do the newly-discovered relics suggest?A. Sanxingdui is more important than the sites in Central China. B. The Sanxingdui Ruins are part of the Liangzhu Ruins.C. Sanxingdui was built by the ancient Shu Kingdom. D. The ancient Shu civilization was creative.【答案】CCBB【解析】1.C细节理解题。Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) announced that they have found more than 500 cultural relics (文物) in six pits (坑) at the site, which dates back over 3,200 years. The site, along with the Liangzhu and Shijiahe sites along the Yangtze River, shows that the birthplace of Chinese civilization might not have been only along the Yellow River Basin (流域) in north China. 这个遗址,连同长江沿岸的良渚和石家河遗址,表明中华文明的发源地可能不仅仅是华北的黄河流域。可知答案选B。4.推断题。They also found cong (琮)-a jade artifact commonly found at the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins in Zhejiang province. 他们还发现了聪(琮),这是在浙江省有5000年历史的良渚考古遗址中常见的一件玉器。从这里可以推断三星堆遗址是良渚遗址的一部分。答案选B。五、阅读理解Chinese space exploration (探索) made great achievements in 2020, with the most significant event being the Chang’e 5 mission (任务), China Daily reported.
The Chang’e 5 was China’s first sample (样本) return mission. It traveled in space for 23 days and brought back 1.7 kg of lunar (月球的) rock and soil samples to Earth. This was the world’s first lunar return mission since 1976 and made China the third country to complete a lunar return mission after the United States and the former Soviet Union.
As the country’s most complicated (复杂的) mission yet, Chang’e 5 marked a major step forward for China’s space exploration, President Xi Jinping said in a letter. The lunar samples have been sent to laboratories for research that will improve understanding of the state, temperature, and material content (物质含量) of the moon.
Some of the samples will be put on display to encourage scientific interest. “This will greatly encourage people, especially young people, to study and explore the worlds beyond Earth,” Xiao Long, a planetary scientist at the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan, told Nature magazine.
China also views the mission as part of mankind’s exploration of the moon as a whole.
The Chang’e 5 landing site was very deliberately (审慎地) chosen. The Mons Rumker site, which had never been sampled before, is geologically younger than the sampling areas of the US and Soviet missions. Scientists believe the new samples could help fill a gap in understanding the moon’s volcanic (火山的) activity and evolution (演变).
China has promised to share its samples with scientists from other countries. Some foreign scientists have shown interest. Lunar exploration is not for commercial purposes, but for the benefit of international scientific research. Mankind will explore the moon together, as large exploration projects will require international cooperation in the future. China will play a leadership role in the international scientific community, China Daily noted.
According to President Xi, the mission was also the latest achievement by China’s overall system (制度), which is characterized by its ability to mobilize (调动) all available resources to deal with difficulties and achieve its goals. This will play a big role in future space missions. 1. What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 1?
A. dangerous B. helpful C. important D. painful2. What do we know about the mission?
A. It was done secretly.
B. The mission’s landing site has never been sampled before.
C. It involved cooperation with other countries.
D. It was the first lunar return mission ever.3.Which statement is Not right? A The Chang’e 5 landing site is different from that of US or Soviet. B. China will share the sample with scientists from other countries. C. The sample (样本) return mission was the world’s first lunar return mission. D. President Xi Jinping wrote a letter to praise the mission.4.What are the third and fourth paragraphs talking about? A. The mission is very valuable. B. The mission is very difficult. C. The mission is very deliberate(慎重的). D. The mission is very interesting. 5. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. What China’s future space missions will be like.
B. China’s ability to unite other countries.
C. The role China will play in future space exploration.
