I was sure this was the worst day of my life. Being diagnosed with Type I diabetes felt almost like a death sentence. My life changed in an instant, and I was terrified of not being able to cope with a chronic(慢性的)disease and afraid that I would never get to be a normal child. Little did I know that this condition would later on allow me to give back to my community through my volunteering initiatives and pursue a career where I could help others.
The impact that my disease had on my family was profound. We all had to learn to adjust to a new reality. I knew that it was up to me to make this work, but I felt lost. After a few days, the initial shock was replaced by denial, then came anger, and little by little, I later gained acceptance. By exercising determination and courage, I decided I would not let it dictate who I was or what I could become.
Meanwhile, I realized that some things in life are better dealt with by having a support system. With this in mind, I looked for volunteering positions where I could share my experience with others and listen to their own struggles. After I got involved in different initiatives, I decided to organize a support group for students who were dealing with difficult situations. The group was so successful that I was invited to other schools to talk about the difference we made in our members, lives by just listening to one another.
We all have challenges in life. Looking back, what felt like a death sentence at first turned into a way of supporting others in my community. It proves that the lessons we take from the setbacks we encounter can, in fact, be fundamental to later success.
24. Why did the author describe illness diagnosis as a death sentence?
A. Because the diagnosis was deadly.
B. Because the condition disabled him.
C. Because the disease ruined his career.
D. Because the illness robbed him of his normal life.
25. How did the author eventually adjust himself to the new reality?
A. He sought support from his family.
B. He lost himself in mood swings.
C. He relied on strong will and courage.
D. He gained acceptance from others.
26. What did the author do to give back to community?
A. Extending a helping hand to difficult students.
B. Inviting volunteers to share their experience.
C. Organizing donations to help those in a struggle.
D. Starting up a support group for students in need.
27. What lesson did the author draw from his experience?
A. Cheerfulness is the promoter of health. B. Helping those in need is a delight.
C. Obstacles bear the seed of success. D. Life is measured by depth than by time.
C
One thousand critically endangered radiated tortoises have been released into the wild in Madagascar, a large island country off the east coast of Africa. The reintroduction is part of a project that aims to boost the tortoise’s numbers and to support declining forests that provide habitats for other wildlife.
The radiated tortoise ( named after the radiating, star-like patterns on its shell ) is native to Madagascar, where it is common. However, since 2000, numbers have dropped from around 12 million to just 3 million. That might still sound a lot individual animals, but the speed of the fall, caused mainly by illegal hunting, has worried conservation groups. Adult tortoises are captured for their meat. Younger ones are taken alive and sold illegally, mostly to countries in Asia. Habitat loss, as forests are cleared for farming, is another cause of the decline.
The Turtle Survival Alliance ( TSA) is a conservation partnership formed in 2001. It has rescued around 25, 000 live radiated tortoises from poachers, and it protects them in secure enclosures around the country. As part of a programme to return them to the wild, it recently moved 1, 000 tortoises to a secret location near the town of Tsihombe in southern Madagascar. Up to 40 of the animals have been fitted with satellite tags so that experts can track their movements after release.
The tortoises play an important role in the health of Madagascans forests because seeds they eat can pass through their digestive system undamaged and be dispersed in their scat ( animal poo) , allowing plants to spread to other areas. “Tortoises contribute to forest regeneration,” said Herilala Randriamahazo, director of TSA’s Madagascar programme. “If the radiated tortoise species disappears, it could have a significant impact on the plant life in the southern part of Madagascar.”
28. Which of the following is NOT a cause for the decline of the radiated tortoise?
A. Over hunting. B. Climate Change.
C. Habitat loss. D. Illegal trade.
29. What did TSA do to secure the lives of the 1, 000 radiated tortoises?
A. Purchased them from private owners. B. Formed partnership with local government.
C. Tracked their movements via satellite tags. D. Transferred them to public secure shelters.
30. What can we infer from Herilala’s words in paragraph 4?
A. The tortoise is a key factor in keeping balance of the forest.
B. The scat of the tortoise fertilizes the plant life in the forest.
C. The decline of the tortoise makes room for plant life in the forest.
D. The disappearance of the tortoise will help restore the forest.
31. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Radiated Tortoises Are Critically in Danger B. TSA Rebuilds Habitat for Radiated Tortoises
C. Radiated Tortoises Keep Forests Healthy D. Endangered Radiated Tortoises Return to Wild
D
Last week, the social media giant Facebook paused its planned launch of Instagram Kids, an app targeted at kids aged between 10 and 12.
It’s rare to see Facebook retreating on its business ambitions. But even Silicon Valley executives, who insulate their own kids from the products they push on the rest of the population, can’t ignore that social media is contributing to an unprecedented mental health crisis among kids and teens. The percent of teens reporting moderate or severe depression has risen substantially from just two years ago —from 25 percent to 38 percent, according to survey results published earlier this year by Common Sense, Hopelab, and the California Health Foundation, correlating with the time period when the pandemic forced kids to spend even more time in front of screens.
In 2017, psychologist Jean Twenge wrote an article in The Atlantic called “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?”—and the backlash was swift. Critics said Twenge was overreacting because she had relied on observational studies, was unable to show a “direction of causality,” and didn’t note social media’s positive outcomes. What permeated these criticisms was a belief that while social media was a problem, some teens who were struggling may have already been vulnerable, and that ultimately, it could be managed if parents encouraged better digital habits.
Teenagers are experiencing significant physical, mental, and hormonal changes that contribute to intense emotions, yet the ability to recognize and process these emotions is much less developed. “I think social media fundamentally changes the way you grow up as a human and turn into yourself,” says Maddie Freeman, 20, who started an initiative called No Social Media November. This emotionally and developmentally difficult age, one in which mental health issues start to arise, is “the same time this platform swoops you up,” Freeman explains.
Since 2012, the year that a social media use moved from optional to ubiquitous among adolescents,” teen cases of mental problems have risen dramatically, as Twenge and Jonathan Haidt recently wrote. Throughout the pandemic, increased social media use was linked to higher levels of depression and anxiety symptoms, according to research by the Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health at Brown University.
32. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A. Instagram Kids was canceled for no apparent reason.
B. Social media employees are blind to the harm of their products.
C. Teenage mental crisis has been dramatically worsened.
D. The percent of teen depression victims will decline.
33. What does the underlined word “insulate” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Shelter. B. Benefit. C. Foster. D. Abandon.
34. The criticisms on Jean Twenge’s article imply that ______.
A. the positive effect of social media cannot be overlooked
B. there is a direct link between social media and teen mental struggle
C. the present teenagers are resistant to the impact of social media
D. parents are to blame for teenagers’ mental health crisis
35. The article is intended to ______.
A. promote the public awareness of teenagers, mental health
B. balance the virtues against drawbacks of the social media
C. analyze the link between social media use and teen mental issues
D. criticize the wrong belief held by some people in social media

Coping with Dry Eye
Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, the tears don’t work correctly, or they evaporate too quickly. 36 “The burning can feel like sand is in your eyes , and this can cause extreme eye tiredness, light sensitivity, and blurry vision,” says Angela Bevels, an eye specialist in Tucson, Arisona.
37 It can last for a long time, though, when caused by immune system diseases such as lupus. Skin issues on or around the eyelids are also contributors. Previous eye surgeries such as LASIK can lead to dry eye too. 38
39 First, take frequent breaks from staring at computer and phone screens. Turn off fans or other direct air to your face, as this can increase the evaporative loss of tears as well. The American Optometric Association (AOA) suggests making sure to get a good night’s sleep. The AOA guide lines suggest aiming for eight to ten glasses of water every day.
Over-the-counter eye drops can help ease symptoms. But when they don’t provide relief or you find you are using drops more than six times a day, it’s time to see an eye doctor for treatments that are available only by prescription or when provided in a medical office. 40 Placing temporary plugs in the eyelids to keep the tears around longer is also one of the treatments.
A. Some life style changes can minimize the discomfort.
B. It is considered common and often ignored.
C. These include heat and compression treatments of the eyelids to improve the tear film.
D. There are many contributors to the condition of dry eye.
E. It is much more than a nuisance.
F. Sometimes dry eye is a temporary condition caused by a variety of irritants.
G. People who wear contact lenses are also at a higher risk.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As 17-YEAR-old Torri’ell Norwood drove through St. Petersburg, Florida, last February, the laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to screams. As they approached a crossroads, another car T-boned (侧面撞击)them, sending their black car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree.
As smoke rose up from the other car, a bystander shouted, “It’s about to blow up! Get out!” The impact had caved in Norwood’s driver’s side door, jamming it shut. Shaken, but otherwise OK, she crawled out through the window. Along with two of her friends, who’s also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life.
But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, A’zarria Simmons, wasn’t with them. Norwood shivered a little as she watched her friends, running back to the car and found Simmons slumped in the back seat. “She wasn’t moving,” Norwood told Inside Edition. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out, avoiding the broken glass as best she could. She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. “I checked her pulse after calling 911.” Nothing. “I put my head against her chest.” No sign of life. Without immediate medical care, Simmons would die. “That’s when I started CPR(心肺复苏).”
Had the accident happened a few weeks earlier she might not have known what to do. But Norwood, who wants to pursue a career in medicine, had earned her CPR certificate just the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. But she knew the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly. “It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death,” says Norwood. Kneeling on the lawn and looking down at her dying friend, Norwood knew she had precious little time to practice what she’d learned.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She started pressing Simmons’s chest with her interlocked(扣紧)fingers.

Dear Tom,
I am Li Hua, a senior 3 student. I am writing in the hope that you will be kind enough to offer me some detailed suggestions to improve my English writing.
Having been learning English for so many years, I have no difficulty in understanding reading materials of moderate levels. What bothers me is that despite my large vocabulary and my relatively good understanding of English grammar, I still fail to write beautiful sentences, let alone good articles. I am really at a loss what to do to improve it.
With the College Entrance Examination approaching, I am terribly pressed for time and in desperate need of your help. So your timely suggestions as specific as possible are highly appreciated.
Yours,
Li Hua

She started pressing Simmons’s chest with her interlocked(扣紧)fingers. At the same time, she tilted her head, lifted her chin and pinched nostrils shut, breathing into her friend’s mouth in hopes of filling her lungs with the kiss of life. No response. She continued the process in a relatively fast rhythm. And then, after the 30th compression, Simmons began coughing and gasping for air. The CPR had worked! Tears scalded her eyes and she was overjoyed at her success.
Soon, doctors arrived and rushed Simmons to the hospital. She received stitches for a gash in her forehead. The doctors gave her a general checkup so as to make sure there is nothing wrong with her. Two weeks later the accident, Simmons went back to school. And then she heard how her best friend had saved her life. “I wasn’t shocked,” Simmons told CNN. “She will always help any way she can. ”
