Even thugh he's yung, he's already experienced the dark side f life. The pening sentence f the bk gives a sense f Jj's unnatural maturity—"I like t think I knw what death is. I like t think that I culd lk at it straight. "
But wh, r what, is t blame fr these sad circumstances? Fr Ward, it's clearly the past. She admires the wrk f fellw nvelist William Faulkner. When she thinks abut the past, she's f the same mind as him.

In mst cuntries. cigarette packages display images r texts that warns smkers f the increased risks f heart attacks, cancer and s n that accmpany lighting up. The researchers expsed lab-grwn crneal epithelium cells t cigarette smke extract—a slutin(溶液)that cntains mst f the ingredients inhaled by cigarette smkers. They fund that after 24 hurs f expsure, mre cells died in the cntainers cmpared with cells that were nt expsed t smke r tbacc. Taken tgether, these signs indicated that expsing crneal cells t the tbacc prducts had caused a frm f cell death.
It starts when cmpunds in the tbacc prducts make cntact with the crneal cells, which leads ferritin(铁蛋白)inside the cells t start breaking dwn and releasing stred irn, Otsu explains. Sme f this irn stays tgether and reacts t prduce chemicals that can harm cells. Nrmally the cells' repair systems can cpe with these chemicals, but when t many accumulate, they damage fats in cells, triggering the cells t die.
Because the study invlved cell cultures rather than live human eyeballs, the researchers are nt yet able t say hw quickly smking r heated tbacc prducts damage a persn's crneas. The next steps will invlve cnducting animal experiments and testing the impact f vaping prducts n crneal cells, Otsu says.
