Mohammed Ali Jinnah was born on 25 December 1876 in Karachi, now in Pakistan, but then part of British-controlled India. His father was a successful Muslim(穆斯林)businessman.
Jinnah studied at Bombay University and at Lincoln's Inn in London. He then ran a successful legal practice in Bombay. He was already a member of the Indian National Congress(印度国大党), which was working for freedom from British rule, when he joined the Muslim League in 1913. The league had formed a few years earlier to stand for the interests of Indian Muslims in a predominantly(占主导地位的)Hindu country, and by 1916 he was elected its president.
In 1920, the Indian National Congress launched a movement of non-cooperation to be against British rule. Jinnah was against this policy and quit from the congress. There were by now serious differences between the congress and the Muslim League.
After provincial elections in 1937, the congress refused to come to power with the Muslim League in mixed areas. Relations between Hindus and Muslims began to deteriorate. In 1940, at a Muslim League meeting in Lahore, the first official demand was made for the separation of India and the creation of a Muslim state of Pakistan. Jinnah had always believed that Hindu-Muslim unity(联合)was possible, but unwillingly came to the view that separation was necessary to protect the rights of Indian Muslims.
His insistence on this point through negotiations(谈判)with the British government resulted in the separation of India and the formation of the state of Pakistan on 14 August 1947. This occurred against a background of widespread violence between Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, and a vast movement of populations between the new states of Pakistan and India in which hundreds of thousands died. Jinnah became the first governor general of Pakistan, but died of a serious disease on 11 September 1948.
24. How old was Mohammed Ali Jinnah when becoming a member of the Muslim League?
A. 37. B. 40. C. 44. D. 47.

27. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By using examples. B. By giving instructions.
C. By following time order. D. By making comparisons.

Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body, say experts in children's nutrition. And taking in those morning calories are worth it, even for people concerned about their weight, a new study finds. Middle-school students who ate breakfast were more likely to have healthy weights than those who skipped breakfast. This was true even for students who ate two breakfasts-one at home and one at school.
“Not skipping breakfast sets you up to not overeat later in the day,” concludes Marlene Schwartz. This psychologist studies obesity(肥胖)and directs the Rudd Center for Obesity & Food Policy at the University of Connecticut in Hartford.
Breakfast is considered so important that many schools now serve it as well as lunch. But at least one study has found that a lot of these kids who take part can end up eating two breakfasts, Schwartz says. People became concerned that kids who ate breakfast at home and at school might become obese.
In fact, Schwartz now says, that's not what her data have turned up.
Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools—in fifth, sixth and seventh grades -were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34 to 44 percent of all students said they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17 percent, or almost one in every six kids, regularly ate breakfast at school. On the whole, about one in every 10 kids reported downing breakfasts both at home and at school.
Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For instance, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade,22 percent of the studied kids skipped breakfast frequently.
Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight.
28. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. Breakfast is more important to your brain.
B. Eating two breakfasts is better than eating one.
C. Eating breakfast mightn't cause kids to gain weight.
D. People concerned about their weight should skip breakfast.
29. What's the possible result of skipping breakfast according to the passage?
A. Being more popular. B. Putting on weight. C. Becoming thinner. D. Being sick.
30. What can we learn about Schwartz's study?
A. It took her four years to finish her study.
B. Eating habits remained the same as the kids got older.
C. Three different grades' students took part in her study.
D. The number of students who ate breakfast at home was smaller.
31. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Breakfast is more important than lunch.
B. Eating habits should change as the kids grow.
C. Kids who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight.
D. It is important to develop a good habit of eating two breakfasts.
D
First of all, African Americans aren't the only ones with big lips(嘴唇). Most people whose ancestry(血统)is from a hot climate would develop larger lips. African Americans are descendants(后代)from Africa where summer and the sun are changeless. Larger lips are one of the evolutionary(进化的)ways of dealing with this kind of climate.
With evolution, our bodies slowly change to help us survive whichever climate we live in. Over many years, Africans have developed ways of dealing with this, including larger nostrils(鼻孔), lips and darker skin.
When it is hot outside we breathe more to cool ourselves and get more oxygen(氧气). A larger nasal passage(鼻腔)helps get more air for faster cooling. Larger lips allow more surface area for the cool air that's breathed in and out to cool the body faster. In an African climate this would give a great advantage.
Dark skin is also an evolutionary feature from this region of the world. Dark skin comes from the body developing a melanin pigment(黑色素)that helps the body take in UV rays from the sun.
There are many stereotypes(刻板印象)as to why Africans(not just African Americans)have big lips. Though most of these are just unfriendly jokes toward their race, some of them are true based on the fact that more air over a surface allows for faster cooling.
Big lips, big noses and dark skin are all just ancestry. That ancestry has been developed to help them deal with the extreme heat that they have faced for thousands of years in Africa(and other warm climates).
32. What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A. African Americans like a hot climate. B. People with big lips only exist in Africa.
C. Large lips have something with their ancestry. D. Africans are good at dealing with a hot climate.
33. Why do Africans have larger nostrils, lips and darker skin?
A. To get used to their environment around them. B. To protect themselves from the sun.
C. To be different from other races. D. To breathe more air.
34. What can help the body absorb UV rays from the sun?
A. Large nose. B. Long hair. C. Big lips. D. Melanin pigments.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What do African large lips depend on? B. Why do African Americans have big lips?
C. How does the climate affect African Americans? D. What effects does ancestry have on African Americans?

Diligence is a must for us to reach our goals. I never realized it until I tried every efforts to win the English speech competition last year.
It was quite a big challenge for me because I was not that confident about your oral English and I was shy to speak in public. To give a better performance, I made fully use of my spare time to prepare for it. I recorded my lines and ask my foreign teacher to correct my pronunciation. Then I kept practise day and night. Besides, I seized every chance to speak in the front of my family or friends. The more I practiced, the much confident I became. In the end, I won the competition but got a prize.
It was such great that all my efforts paid off. I was so proud myself.

参考范文
Dear Tony,
I'm glad to receive your e-mail. I am sorry that you are so angry these days. I think you should help your parents do housework.
First, doing housework can make us know how hard our parents are working and understand them better. As a result, we should often do housework at home, such as making the bed, watering flowers, cleaning the rooms, taking out the rubbish and doing the dishes. What's more, doing housework helps to develop our independence and teach us how to love others, which is good for our development. In a word, it's not enough that we just get good grades at school.
I hope my advice is helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
