The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.
Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you,and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.
Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it's for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.
Anyway, adding humor, laughter and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.
4. What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Playing an important role. B. Keeping people in high spirits.
C. Quickly influencing other people. D. Preventing illness from spreading.
5. What can laughter increase according to the author?
A. Cognitive ability. B. Good relationships.
C. A sense of humor. D. Happiness and trust.
6. What does the author think the old should do?
A. They should have a good rest. B. They should play like children.
C. They should prevent cognitive falling. D. They should take part in physical play.
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Humor, Laughter and Play for Health B. Always Keep Our Body Healthy
C. Have an Active and Happy Life D. Let Our Body and Mind Relax
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. A

C
Do you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? Can you? If so, you could be the next great inventor. “But I’m just a kid,” you might say! Don’t worry about a little thing like age. For example, one famous inventor — Benjamin Franklin — got his start when he was only 12. At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Finally his creation led to what we know is called flippers!
So you don’t have to be an adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of: curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways.
So what should you do if you have what is a great idea for an invention? Talk to a friend or family member about it. Get input from others about your idea. Then ask them to help you create a working model — called a prototype (原型) — of your idea.
Once you have a prototype, you can test it. Sometimes your idea turns out to be not as great as you thought. At other times, though, you realize it is a good idea and your prototype can help you figure out how to make it even better.
If your idea is really a good one, an adult can help you contact companies that might be interested in it. You will also want an adult’s help to get a patent (专利权) for your idea, so that it is protected and can’t be stolen by someone else. If you need some inspiration, consider these kids and their inventions:
Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It’s a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves.
At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read.
Chelsea Lanmon received a patent when she was just 8 for the “pocket diaper”, a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder.
8. By saying “But I’m just a kid”, you probably mean you ________.
A. are too young to achieve anything
B. can do anything though you are young
C. are old enough to become an inventor
D have to learn knowledge from other people
9. Which of the following is the right order of an invention?
A. a patent—a prototype—a good idea—an invention
B. an invention—a good idea—a patent—a prototype
C. a good idea—a prototype—an invention—a patent
D. a prototype—a patent—a good idea—an invention
10. Who invented something that helps the blind to read?
A. Jeanie Low. B. Benjamin Franklin. C. Chelsea Lanmon. D. Louis Braille.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A. Kids have curiosity and imagination
B. There are some world famous inventors
C. Kids are exactly like adults in a way
D. It is possible for kids to be inventors
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. D

Salome Thomas-El, the headmaster of Thomas Edison Charter School, has spent more than 30 years teaching his students life lessons through the game of chess. 90% of the students at the school live at or below the poverty level. "These children are playing chess and graduating high school and going to some of the top colleges in the nation," Thomas-El said.
As Thomas-El was looking for innovative ways to teach children math early in his career, he turned to a game from his childhood: chess. "I started actually teaching students math on the chessboard where knights move on right angles, bishops move on diagonals (对角线)…I fell in love with the game as a teacher. Through chess, Thomas-El saw that his students were learning more than just math — they developed confidence and self-respect. Thomas-El decided to get more students involved in chess. He provided chess sets and students began playing during breakfast and lunch. He also opened up the school on Saturdays to give students the chance to play chess, learn and get weekend meals.
Soon, Thomas-El was able to form his own chess team of 40 students. Because some tournaments are all-female, he decided to also create an all-girls team. Over his career. Thomas-EI's all-girls teams have taken on men twice their age and come out victorious. One of his teams even went three years undefeated.
Thomas-El said his proudest moments as an educator do not come from watching his students win games, but from watching them succeed in life. Many of the girls he's coached in chess have gone on to attend schools like Cornell and the University of Virginia on scholarships. Some of them became teachers themselves and come back to help their community.
In the future, Thoma-El hopes to expand chess's impact on students as a board member of America's Foundation for Chess, which has launched a new chess program for kids in school called"First Move."

C. To help students acquire a new skill.
D. To help poor students win a scholarship.

A. They consisted of 40 students.
B. They have performed well in tournaments.

encourage sb. to do sth.
with one’s help在某人的帮助下,该用法是固定用法,所以Under改成With 。
第九处:考查冠词。句意:在她的帮助和鼓励下,我成为了一个独立、自信、外向的高中生。independent是以元音音素开头的词,用不定冠词an,所以a改成 an。
第十处:考查代词。句意:现在我是个成年人了,该轮到我照顾她了。这里指“该轮到我照顾我的妈妈了”,所以him改成her。
