[2021·南昌市一模] Cecilia Chiang, whose San Francisco restaurant, The Mandarin, introduced American diners in the 1960s to the richness and variety of authentic Chinese cuisine, died on Wednesday at her home in San Francisco.

Ms. Chiang was not a chef, nor was she a likely candidate to run a restaurant. She was born near Shanghai in 1920 as the seventh daughter in a wealthy family. After her parents died, Cecilia managed the businesses' finances while still in her teens.

Ms. Chiang came to the United States from China to flee the Japanese during World War traveling nearly 700 miles on foot. Once in San Francisco, she met two Chinese acquaintances who wanted to open a restaurant. Ms. Chiang agreed to put up large funds. But when the two women quit, Ms. Chiang found to her horror that the funds were not refundable (可退还的). She took a deep breath and decided to open the restaurant herself. I began to think that if I could create a restaurant with Westernstyle service and the dishes that I was most familiar with the delicious food of China maybe my little restaurant would succeed she wrote in her book.

The Mandarin, which was opened in 1962 as a 65seat restaurant, introduced customers to mainly Sichuan, Shanghai and Canton dishes. The early days were difficult. But little by little, Chinese diners, and a few Americans, came regularly. Overnight the tables were filled and the restaurant became a huge success.

Ms. Chiang continued to work as a restaurant consultant into her 90s. I think I changed what average people know about Chinese food Ms. Chiang wrote. They didn't know China was such a big country.

4When did Ms. Chiang start to manage the businesses' finances ?

AIn the 1920s.     BIn the 1930s.

CIn the 1950s.     DIn the 1960s.

5What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

AWhen Ms. Chiang came to the US.

BHow Ms. Chiang earned her deposit.

CWhat Ms. Chiang wrote in her book.

DWhy Ms. Chiang opened her restaurant.

6What do we know about The Mandarin?

    AIt survived the early hardships.

BIt provided all kinds of Chinese dishes.

CIt could seat less than 60 people at first.

DIt attracted many Americans once opened.

7Which of the following can best describe Ms. Chiang?

    ASmart but stubborn.

    BDevoted and brave.

    CAdventurous but careless.

    DEnthusiastic and ambitious.

    C

[2021·南昌市一模]Prince William, second in line to the British throne, gave his first TED Talk on Saturday to launch his Earthshot Prize, a competition that will award five 1 million prizes every year for the next decade to those who can come up with solutions to environmental problems.

Any person, group or organization around the world is qualified, and any suggestion is welcome, so long as it is applicable globally. It could be a new technology, a new approach, a new governmental policy or any other ideas toward five environmental goals fixing the climate, purifying the air, protecting nature, cleaning the ocean and handling waste.

Earthshot was inspired by John F. Kennedy's Moonshotan ambitious 1961 mission to get a man on the moon within a decade. The purpose of the prize is partly to arouse excitement and offer what Prince William called a bit of a catalyst,__a bit of hope, a bit of positivity at a time when the world needs those. The money will come from donors around the world. The prize committee includes many celebrities.

Prince William has environmental activism in his blue blood. Both his grandfather and his father Prince Charles were active environmentalists. Prince William said he had always listened, learned and believed what they were saying about the environment. Besides speaking wise words, he also puts forward a good prize. A million pounds is significantly more than a Nobel Prize and should inspire some serious and creative thinking about the difficulties of the planet Earth. Unlike the Nobel Prize money, the Earthshot money is supposed to be spent on the winning project. If we achieve these goals, by 2030 our lives won't be worse, and we won't have to sacrifice everything we enjoy. Instead, the way we live will be healthier, cleaner, smarter, and better for all of us he said.

8What can be learned about The Earthshot Prize?

     A. It will be awarded to Britons.

     B. It aims to solve social problems.

     C. It is named after a moon mission.

     D. It offers 50 million in total.

9A person can win the prize for ________

Aa method to monitor sea level

Ba new technology to forecast the weather

Ca new approach to recycling the waste

Da local government policy to ban fishing

10What does the underlined wordcatalyst in Paragraph 3 mean ?

    AEncouragement.     BAlarm.

    CChallenge.     DSurprise.

11What can we infer from the last paragraph?

AThe Earthshot Prize equals the Nobel Prize.

BPlanet Earth will be cleaned by 2030.

CPrince William only talks the talk.

DPrince William is influenced by his family.

    D

[2021·日照市高三阶段适应性考试] There are around 100 tribes(部落) that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language. Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they've had more contact with the outside world.

Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic (游牧的) and started hunting animals in the forest.

The Awa live in the Amazon forests of Brazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.

Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的) humans on the planet and that's why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us. After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil's government to clear nonnatives from the Awa land. All nonAwa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back.

But some think it's impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is: Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

12What can we learn about the Sentinelese from the first paragraph ?

AThey resist contact from the outside world.

BThey speak the same language as the Jarawa.

CThey are wild about fighting with other tribes.

DThey have got help from the Indian government.

13Why did the Awa choose a nomadic lifestyle?

    ATo protect their hunting land.

    BTo search for food sources.

    CTo avoid threats from Europeans.

DTo maintain their original way of life.

14Which of the following would Survival probably agree with?

AThe tribes should be left undisturbed.

BThe tribes should fight for more living space.

CThe tribes should live in harmony with nature.

DThe tribes should adapt to the connected world.

15What can be the best title for the text?

AThe Nomadic Tribes in the World

    BSeeking Survival of Tribes

    CThe Unavailable Tribal Environment

    DProtecting the Tribal Forests
