Travelling the world is something that leaves an impact on your being. Here is a list of inspiring destinations that are bound to change your life. Some completely influenced who I am today, and some are at the very top of my bucket list.

    Kenya

The beautiful Maasai people are a symbol of family and love, and although some of their cultural traditions may not be accepted by everyone, their willingness to accept others and cherish the beauty of Kenya is truly hard to ignore.

Kenya’s incredible land showed me the importance of appreciating all living beings and helped me recognize that regardless of our species, we have far more similarities than differences. Visiting this country made me realize that living in harmony with wildlife is something that we all should fight for, no matter where we might be in the world.

    Myanmar

Unlike so many other destination in Asia that have been crowded by tourists, this county’s historic appearance is still entirely existent. Ancient temples are scattered across the land, and the quiet, peaceful Buddhist approach to life is still very much common.

For many people, Myanmar is a destination that brought peace back into their lives. Due to its large Buddhist population. —almost 90% in fact—this country makes you appreciate all life on Earth like never before, while its untouched landscapes make you fall head over heels with the world.

Much like India, this is a diverse country where people live side by side in harmony, regardless of religions.

    India

India is a place that teaches you so many important life lessons. A lot of people have asked me what it was about this country that made me change so much, and I honestly couldn’t tell you. It’s a true mixture of seeing various sights, being absorbed in the unique atmosphere, and learning about spirituality and many diverse religions.

    2. What do Myanmar and India have in common?

    C. The untouched scenery. D. The crowded temples.

    3. Where is the text most probably taken from?

    A. A news report. B. A travel blog.

    C. A science magazine. D. A geography textbook.

    B

I was sitting at my desk when another graduate student in my lab approached me. "Can you help?" he begged. His experiment wasn't working and he desperately needed help. I was a fifth year Ph.D, student, the senior member of the lab at the time. As I had many times before, I gave in and said yes.

I had a hard time saying no to such requests. I was new to the United States, having moved from China for graduate school. I found it difficult to make new friends and discover afterwork activities I enjoyed. My lab-mates served as my primary source of social connection. I feared that if I brushed them off, I'd lose their favor.

After I graduated and started a job in industry, I continued to carry the same attitude with me, and it continued to cost me. It wasn't until my wife gave birth to our first child that I realized how thin I had stretched myself and how misguided my priorities(重要的事)were. While she lay in a hospital bed in the early stages of labor(分娩阵痛), І sat nearby, busy in correcting a work report on my laptop for my colleague. Hours later, after hearing my daughter's first cry and watching her tiny fingers grab tightly onto mine, it dawned on me that I should have been fully present during my daughter's birth.

From then on, I determined to spare more time for my family by reducing my work tasks and carefully considering each request for help. I sill enjoyed cooperating with others, but I dealt with mutually(共同地)beneficial tasks first, rather than accepting everything that came my way.

I noticed many benefits, and few disadvantages. My daily work schedule was not so crowded. I no longer worked overtime, and I was able to improve my work performance by focusing more on important tasks. I was also pleased to discover that "Sorry, I'd love to help but I have a deadline coming, up", is an acceptable response to a request for assistance. Most colleagues seem to understand.

It's hard to say "no" to those you work with. But I've learned that sometimes that's the best way to avoid too much workload and lead a freer and happier life.

    4. Why was it hard for the author to refuse others' requests in school?

    A. He was eager for a bond with others.

    B. He was interested in helping others.

    C. He was fond of doing experiments.

    D. He was the most experienced student.

    5. What made the author carefully consider each request for help?

    A. His graduation. B. His wife's request.

    C. The birth of his daughter. D. The unhealthy state of his body.

    6. What does the author think is the priority now?

A Writing a report. B. Connecting with others.

    C. Accompanying his family. D. Requesting others for help.

    7. What happened to the author after refusing others?

    A. He got along badly with his colleagues.

    B. He got a lot more vital tasks.

    C. He received assistance from his colleagues.

    D. He got less work and more joy.

    C

On a summer day in the remote Transylvanian village of Micasasa, Romanian architect Eugen Vaida is busy organizing a team of volunteers to help breathe new life into a centuries-old castle on the edge of ruin. "It's in a state of damage and it's a symbol of national importance," said Vaida, who launched the Ambulance for Monuments project.

The Ambulance for Monuments has a simple task: to race around the country, giving care to as many historical buildings as possible that are in a state of damage before it's too late. Since it was launched, Ambulance for Monuments has rescued 55 historical structures, including ancient churches, historic walls and ancient UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Situated in a broad valley at the foot of the Carpathian Mountain, the 16th-century Brukenthal Castle is one such endangered building being rescued by the project. The old castle remained unnoticed for more than two decades. Its roof is leaking and its wood is rotting(腐烂). It is in serious need of attention. "It probably would have reached a stage where it could barely be saved. It would have become a ruin you cannot build again," Vaida said, "heritage is not renewable."

The project is supported by dozen of volunteer who are playing an important role in preserving Romania's past. Young people are starting to get more aware of their cultural identity. One person directly involved in the efforts to save the endangered building from ruin is 30-year-old Timotei Pacurar. For him, saving the Brukenthal Castle holds a great significance. "When I started school, I was here in this room, in the first class—we have a lot of good memories here," Pacurar said, "I was disappointed to see that the building almost fell down. The future is in our hands, and we can change things. We can make this building look good again—like a treasure for our community."

Rescuing as much of Romania's architectural heritage is Vaida's chief aim. "Over the next five years, the plan is to expand over the whole country," he said, "every Romanian should at some point come to put a brick or a nail on a roof to save their own endangered buildings."

    8. What is the mission of the Ambulance for Monuments project?

    A. To build new Romanian castles.

    B. To remove ruins of ancient buildings.

    C. To attract people to visit heritages.

    D. To restore damaged old buildings.

    9. What was the public's previous attitude towards preserving Brukenthal Castle?

    A. Prejudiced. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

    10. Why does Pacurar think it important to save the castle?

    A. Because it witnessed the beginning of his education.

    B. Because it stored some treasures at the bottom.

    C. Because it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

    D. Because it reminds him of the importance of the community.

    11. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Historic Buildings Are Threatened.

    B. Romania Races to Save Its Past.

    C. Heritage Is Our Cultural Identity.

    D. Ancient Buildings Are National Symbols.

    D

According to the UN report, nearly 54 million tons of e-waste was generated around the world in 2019. It includes everything from phones and computer monitors to larger items like refrigerators and old fax machine.

Rwanda is one of only 13 countries in Africa that have passed a national law regarding e-waste rule. It has led to the first official recycling and reusing facility in the country. Operational since early last year, this public-private partnership between the government and Enviroserve became a source of pride for Rwanda. The plant can process up to 10,000 tons of e-waste per year. According to managing director Olivier Mbera, Enviroserve has already repaired and reused more than 5,000 computers, which were sold to public schools. To date, it has processed more than 4,000 tons of e-waste and created more than 600 jobs.

Conveyor belts(传送带)sort plastics from metals, while particular space collects phosphor(磷)from old tube TVs. Circuit boards(电路板)pile up in bags and batteries are constantly being tested. Every piece of e-waste is thoroughly collected or pressed. The dangerous materials which can poison the environment are separated from the valuable ones.

"Globally, waste is not only increasing in quantity, but also in its complexity and composition," says Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya, country representative for Rwanda at the Global Green Growth Institute, an intergovernmental organization for sustainable(可持续的)economic growth. "Within an electronic device, there's gold, silver and so on and these sorts of elements could be taken out, providing new business opportunities for small businesses and even for big cities to generate income. Rwanda is one of our earliest pioneer members and they've done really well when it comes to its shift to a green growth pathway," he adds.

Mbera points to Enviroserve's success in Rwanda as a potential beginning for an e-waste movement across Africa. "We're talking with different governments in Africa to establish similar facilities in their countries," he says. One thing is certain: it will take all nations to combat the growing e-waste crisis.

    12. What can we know about e-waste recycling facility in Rwanda?

    A. It is the first plant to reuse e-waste in Africa.

    B. It is managed entirely by the government.

    C. It has already processed 10,000 tons of e-waste.

    D. It manages e-waste in an eco-friendly way.

    13. What can be inferred according to Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya?

    A. Electronic devices are made of gold and silver.

    B. E-waste can contain potential treasure.

    C. Simple electronic devices are in great need.

    D. Rwanda is the only nation to recycle e-waste.

    14. Which word can replace the underlined word "combat" in Paragraph 5?

    A. Create. B. Handle. C. Discover. D. Reach.

    15. What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. Rwanda is coping with the rising e-waste crisis.

    B. Lots of electronic devices are wasted in the world.

    C. A great deal of e-waste is poisoning the environment.

    D. E-waste is increasing in complexity and composition.

Increased hormones(荷尔蒙)and changes to the brain structure arise from normal physical growth. Also, complex social interactions such as conflicts with friends, school pressures and experimentation with romantic relationships can worsen the unstable emotional state of adolescents.

    Personal Identity

Adolescence is a time when teenagers begin to explore and confirm their personal identities. Adolescents often test parents' and teachers' rules and boundaries(界限). Although this behavior might seem opposed to parents in most cases, this behavior is driven by the adolescent's need to develop independence and experience new activities. Even though teenagers can benefit from testing boundaries during adolescence, they still require rules and boundaries if they are to avoid negative influences and achieve their potential.

    Self-centered Attitudes

____20____. This is due, in part, to their still-developing brain structures. Thus, adolescents might come off as self-centered and focused on their own needs without considering others' need. This lack of empathy(同理心)is normal and may disappear once a ten reaches the end of adolescence.
