Do you like running enough to make it a habit? Tierney Wolfgram does; she has made running a lifelong career and isn't stopping.
In February, the 16-year-old from a high school,US, competed at the 2020 US Olympic Trials, She finished the marathon (42. 195 km) with a time of 2:42' 47"as the youngest competitor in the race and ranked 76th out of 390 runners. However, the cross- country season was postponed to winter because of the COVID-19. So she jumped at the opportunity to train for another race—the Parkway Marathon in California. In November, Wolfgram broke the Women’s American Junior marathon record with her time of 2:31'49". The old record was 2:34'32", which had stood since 1984.
“I'm completely stunned, ” said Wolfgram's coach. “I knew she was going to break it, but she really showed out!”
During the run, Wolfgram once hit a wall pretty hard, but she overcame it to finish. “I guess I can say I gave it my all, ” she told Runner's World.“ When I finished, all I was thinking was I felt super happy,”Wolf-gram said. This was only her third marathon. In 2018 ,when Wolfgram was 15 years old, she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she had the ability to do it. “I believed that I would get faster as the distances got longer... I'm still glad that I did it.”
When preparing for that first marathon, she ran up to 120 miles per week. Although her parents didn't have any background in running, they helped Wolfgram train. At first, her dad would take her out in the morning and run about 13 miles. The distance would gradually increase each day. On top of her runs in the morning, she would do cross-country practice after school.
Now Wolfgram will consider attending the Olympics Games in 2024 after it's scheduled.

Picture a pigeon resting on a telephone wire.Ready for takeoff, it raises its wings, springs into the
air and flies away. This series of actions are so common that you probably do not pay much attention to it. But University of Manchester biomechanical(生物力学)engineer BenParslew does.He is trying
to design robots that can jump and take off like birds.
Most traditional robots roll around on wheels, constraining mobility. “There is a need for more intelligent robots that can jump over the thing that is in their way,” Parslew says. To design such a
machine, he turned to nature. “Birds are really good jumpers,” he notes.
The trouble is, when birds start to take off, they’ll bend so far forward that, according to the rulesof physics, they should tip over and fall onto their beaks (鸟喙). Yet that does not happen.Parslew and
his team used computer modeling to discover how birds avoid this. They discovered that birds turned
their bodies slightly backward while ready to jump.
Parslewthinks engineers can use this information to design robots that can not only jump well
but also send themselves into the air more efficiently. Most human-engineered flying machines requireeither long runways or flat surfaces for takeoff. Either way , they take a while to overcome
gravity and gain altitude.
Universityof Southern California biomechanist MichaelHabib, who was not involved in the
study, says springsenable more rapid speed than wheels do. And many animals are masters of
springs. “A house cat will beat a Lamborghini off the line for the first 100 feet,” he says. While the
car has to speed up, the cat jumps itself into a run. The same movement explains how birds start
flight.
“If you can understand how that works,”Habib adds, “you can build a robot that's good at running around and good at flying, and it will also be good at taking offsuddenly in all kinds of conditions
and landing quickly on a dime. ” Parslew is now designing such a robot, as an alternative to wheeled
plane for exploring other planets.
8. Why do birds' takeoff actions catch Ben Parslew's attention?
A. Because he is fond ofwild animals.
B. Because he wants to design robots that can jump and take off like birds.
C. Because he is a biomechanical engineer.
D. Because he is curious about nature.
9. The underlined word “constraining” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to“_________ ”
A. improving B. robbing C. continuing D. limiting
10. What will happen when birds start to take off?
A.They will jump first before taking off.
B. They will tip over and fall onto their beaks.
C. They will make their bodies slightly backward.
D. It will take birds a while to overcome gravity and fly to the sky.
11. What is the meaning of researching birds' takeoff?
A. Making robot jump and take off like birds.B. Improving the ability of a plane.
C. Inventing a robot which can speed up quickly.D. Making robots fly more efficiently.
D
If all goes well, a balloon will soon rise from SpaceCenter in Sweden. It will float high into theupper atmosphere, where nothing will happen, and then return toEarth. Nevertheless , a collection of environmental groupsis trying to stop it.
The campaigners are against the flight because of whatcomes next. The balloon is a test flight for a research being run by the University of Harvard. The research aims totest an idea called SAI, in which fine dust is added into theupper atmosphere to boost the amount of sunlight reflectedback into space. A future flight will release a small amountof calcium carbonate dust into the upper atmosphere, inorder to help researchers learn more about solar geoengineering— an excellent but theoretical idea of deliberatelyadjusting the Earth’s systems to prevent the bad effects ofclimate change.
Opponents worry about two things. The first is themoral issue. If solar geoengineering works, it could reducepressure to deal with climate change at its source by cutting greenhousegas emissions.Furthermore, in order tokeep temperatures low, the reflective particles (颗粒 )would have to be topped up continuously. A sudden stopcould result in very rapid warming.Raymond Pierrehumbert, a physicist at the University of Oxford, says solargeoengineering is too risky even to research outside ofcomputer simulations (模拟).
Not all environmentalists are opposed. The world islikely to miss the target, set in the Paris agreement, ofkeeping warming to 1.5℃. “We're not well-served by notunderstanding what these technologies represent,”saysSteven Hamburg. Mr. Hamburg favors small-scale geoengineering research. Other green organizations have alsohesitantly approved of exploring the idea.
Exploration is likely to carry on in any case. Once ataboo, geoengineering is being taken increasingly seriously. A recent report on climate change suggested that SAIcould help keep warming below 1.5℃. America has developed a research plan for solar geoengineering. Both Chinaand India have launched research programmesof theirown. Activists will continue to oppose experiments. Butballoons will likely fly anyway.
12.How does solar geoengineering work?
A. Dust is put into the upper atmosphere to trap more heat..
B. Measures are taken intentionally totackle the climate change.
C. Steps are taken deliberately to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
D. Dust is emptied into the atmosphereto reflect sunlight into Earth.
13. Why do environmentalists argue againstSAI?
A.It istobe implemented on a largescale.
B. It has led to global warming againstthe original intention.
C. It is probably to miss the target ofkeeping warming to 1.5C.
D. It may cause people to care little about greenhouse gas emissions.
14. What is the best title of the text?
A. Should balloons , flight be banned?
B. Should solar geoengineering exploration go ahead?
C. How do balloons threaten the earth'sclimate?
D. How has solar geoengineering changedEarth?
15. What is the author's attitude to solargeoengineering?
A. CriticalB.DoubtfulC. PositiveD. Frightened

根据文章第三段教练所说的“I knew she was going to break it, but she really showed out!
根据文章第四段中的“she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she had the ability
to do it.(她跑了第一次马拉松。
根据文章首句“Do you like running enough to make it a habit?" 故选A项。
根据第一段最后一 句“He is trying to design robots that can jump and take off like birds.(他正在尝
Most traditional robots roll around on wheels(大多数传统的机器人都是靠轮子滚动的)和There is a need for more intelligent robots that ‘can jumpover the thing that is in their way,(我们需要更智能的机器人,能够跳过挡在他们面前的东西,)由此可知,划线部分指的是“限制了”灵活性。故选D。

If solar geoengineering works, it could reduce pressure to deal with climate change at its source by cutting greenhouse -gas emissions.
If all goes well, a balloon will soon rise from Space Center in Sweden. “Should solar geoengineering exploration go ahead?(太阳地球工程勘探应该继续进行吗?)”
根据第五段关键句“Exploration is likely to carry on in any case. A recent report on climate change suggested that SAI could help keep warming below 1.5C.

①me改为I。
②the改为a。 As a matter of fact为固定搭配,意为“事实上”,所以将the改为a。
③had改为has。 根据该句中的时间状语since my childhood和语境可以判断,此处应用现在完成时,且主语为being a scientist,所以将had改为has。
devote oneself to. ..
⑦asking后加for。
⑨Therefore改为However。
⑩删除will后的be。
