Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California. She has studied the mental functioning(运转) of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies includes 136 pairs of twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline(衰弱) as was expected.
However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor(精神运动) speed. This means that it took them longer to finish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor(因素), they lost very little intellectual(智力的) ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning(推理) ability. This is true not only with those in their 30s and 40s, but with those in their 60s and 70s as well.
It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call “loss of memory” is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or was trying to learn the new thing at too fast a speed. In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to get worse, it is not necessarily a sigh of decline due to old age. Often it is simply a sign of a sad emotional state(状态).
48. More often than not, what we call mental decline is actually a sign of ________.
A. a worsening state of health B. old age
C. nervous tension D. a state of unhappiness
49. According to Dr. Jarvik’s studies, middle-aged and older persons are likely to ________.
A. reason better B. earn fewer new things
C. remember less D. lose little ability to remember
50. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. what caused mental decline
B. a new discovery about mental decline
C. the difference between middle-aged and older persons
D. how Dr. Jarvik studied mental functioning of twins

When we walked into Papillion Bleu, a Chinese restaurant around the comer from Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal’s Old Port, the only waiter on duty looked surprised to see us. At 7:45 on a Saturday night, at the height of tourist season, just one young white family sat in the dining room. We walked past them to a table in the back, Chopin(肖邦) drifting(漂浮) quietly from the speakers into the certain shade of dark light that only Chinese restaurants seem to have. At our seats, bright yellow napkins, folded into fans, rested on a blue table cloth next to cutlery(餐具). Sometime in the last 18 years of practice, Papillion Bleu stopped bothering with chopsticks.
“How did you find out about us?” our waiter politely asked. I told him that my family used to own a Chinese restaurant that served peanut butter dumplings and I wanted to taste them again. Papillion Bleu came up when I google. “Best Peanut Butter Dumplings in Montreal”. He shook his head and told us that while it might have been the case a few years ago, they had changed peanut butter brands to cut costs.
But the importance for me wasn’t which brand they used, it was that they served peanut butter dumplings. Commonly known as Hunan dumplings, this specialty exists(存在) neither in China, nor anywhere else in North America. Instead, Hunan dumplings are a unique(独一无二的) Quebecois tradition, and a slowly dying one found in the second-generation Chinese family restaurants.
Peanut butter dumplings taste exactly how they sound, but also unlike anything else. It is a kind of dumpling that coats your mouth with a distinct store-brand quality, a little too sweet, but buttery, and luxuriously(十分舒适地) warm, perfectly suited to fight the bone chilling effects(作用) of the Montreal winter.
51. What can we infer about the restaurant?
A. It still uses chopsticks. B. It is well decorated.
C. The business hour is long. D. The business is not good.
52. How did the author find the restaurant?
A. By accident. B. By frequent(频繁的) visits.
C. By searching online. D. By others’ recommendation.
53. What does the author think of the Montreal winter?
A. Freezing. B. Gentle. C. Cool. D. Warm.
D
Mark Hoffman and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh products from the garden.
The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffman has been experimenting and working with shade(阴凉) plantings. He says, “The bottom line here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.”
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours’ direct sunshine a day, especially morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours’ full sun a day, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients and water. Mr. Hoffman also planted asparagus(芦笋) around a tree. When it rains, all the rain from the leaves of the tree drops down right on the asparagus.
Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.
Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem with leaf hoppers. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticide(杀虫剂). Instead, he planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Leaf hoppers dislike shade, and the hottest part day is when they do the worst of their damage.
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings all influence how much sunlight falls or does not fall on plants. People who are interested in shade planting should also consider different conditions which planting vegetables in the shade.
54. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce Mark Hoffman and his family.
B. To recommend a method of managing a website.
C. To show vegetables can be planted in the shade.
D. To show vegetable must be planted in the shade.
55. Wat can we infer from the second paragraph?
A. Food and flowers produce more in the shade. B. Food and flowers can’t grow without full sun.
C. Planting food in the shade is the best choice. D. Sun can influence the production of some plant.
56. By using asparagus as an example, the writer wants to explain that ________.
A. how plants and trees share water B. vegetables grow better in the shade
C. how leaves get sunshine under the tree D. asparagus prefers to grow in the shade
57. The underlined words “leaf hoppers” in Paragraph 5 may be a kind of ________.
