Sidney Keys, 14-year-old, has started a youth-led book club program, with the support and help of his mom, to help empower both himself and many other boys with mental or physical problems through literature.
“I used to have a really bad stutter (结巴) and perform badly in school and I would get laughed at for it, ”Sidney Keys, the founder of the book club Books N Bros said. “Reading was kind of my escape from my stutter because in my head I was able to imagine things and play out all the events clearly.” He said, “I wanted to startup Books N Bros so that I could talk to other people, especially boys, about books I love in a relaxing way because it’s like a brotherhood”.
The reading club that he started at just 10 years old now has over 250 “bros” aged 7 to 13 from the U.S. and Canada, most of whom are changing actively and positively. Marvels Hero Project, which reveals the remarkable, positive change young men make in their communities across the country and turns them into superheroes, selected Keys to be featured in the Disney series.

As for the future of Books N Bros, Keys and his mom hope to expand the programs reach throughout the country. “Getting Books N Bros in schools across America, we don’t want transportation to be an issue for getting that physical brotherhood and bond. It just benefits so many people, and it keeps me going,” Keys explained.

Have you ever noticed there is some difference between city trees and forest trees? A new study finds city trees grow faster but die younger than trees in rural forestry.
As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without carbon dioxide. However, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise. Human activities, especially the widespread burning of fossil fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases in to the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe.
Studies had shown forests readily absorb carbon dioxide, but there hadn’t been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb carbon dioxide at the same rate as forest trees do. So some researchers decided to find out.
To figure out how quicky trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree’s diameter increases as it grows, just as a person’s waist size increases as they gain weight. The research has shown about half the weight of a tree is carbon, while most of the rest is water. Over the nine years’ tracking, the researchers found city trees absorbed four times as much carbon dioxide from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die. So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more carbon dioxide.
City trees grew faster because they have less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors. Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮) in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak.
8. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The greenhouse gas does harm to the earth.
B. Carbon dioxide plays apart in keeping the earth’s temperature.
C. Carbon dioxide can heat the earth.
D. Only human act iii es make the temperature rise.
9. What information can a tree diameter tell?
A. How a tree is transplanted. B. How long a tree is.
C. How old a tree is. D. How much water a tree contains.
10. How do city trees differ from forest trees of the same type over the lifetime in the research?
A. They could live twice longer than forest trees.
B. They took in less carbon dioxide than forest trees.
C. They could absorb more carbon dioxide than forest trees.
D. They weighted heavier than forest trees.
11. What advantage do city trees have?
A. They have no competition. B. They grow closer together.
C. They get more nutrition like nitrogen. D. They have better access to rainwater.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. C

There are many reasons to skip deep-fried fast food, one of which is the challenge of dealing with used cooking oil. But researchers at the University of Toronto have discovered amusing method of transforming this useless waste product into an affordable plastic ink for 3D printers. And there’s more good news! The ink can breakdown naturally, unlike conventional 3D printing resins (树脂).
Professor Andre Simpson is director of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto. He first became interested in the idea when he got a 3D printer around three years ago. After noticing that the molecules (分子) used in commercial resins resembled fats found in cooking oil, he wondered whether such a molecule could be created using waste cooking oil.
Using old cooking oil from a local McDonalds restaurant close to a campus, Professor Simpson and his research team applied a one-step chemical process in the lab, using about one liter of used cooking oil to make just under half of that amount in resins. The resin was then used to print a plastic butterfly that was structurally and thermally (热地) stable. This means that it won’t crumble or melt above room temperature.
Speaking to Goodnet, Professor Simpson outlined his high hopes for the creative and cheaper route to recycling that waste cooking oil: “Normally 3D printing resins come from fossil fuels, but by recycling used cooking oil into a high value product, we hope it will reduce the financial barriers, which should be a win-win for the environment.
Professor Simpson is also excited that the new lower cost of this 3D printing material will open up access to the near-limitless creative opportunities. “We hope that as the resin can be made very cheaply, it could reduce the 3D printing cost, so the technology is available to everyone,” he explains.
12. How do the researchers deal with the waste cooking oil?
A. Produce 3D printers from it.
B. Make plastic inkfor3D printers from it.
C. Throw it away as waste products.
D. Use it as 3D printing resins directly.
13. What does the underlined word “crumble” in Paragraph 3mean?
A. Swell up B. Get up C. Break up D. Heat up
14. What is the feature of the products made from the new printing material?
A. They are much stronger B. They can be recycled easily.
C. They are lower in cost. D. They won’t breakdown naturally.
15. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Researchers Invent New 3D Printers. B. Waste Cooking Oil Finds a New Life.
C. 3D Printing Resins Bring More Hopes. D. A High-tech Product Changes Our Lives.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. B
