Healthy eating may offer young children an unexpected gift—it might help them become better readers.
Researchers in Finland found students' reading skills improved more between first grade and third grade if they didn't eat a lot of sugary foods or red meat, and if their diet consisted mainly of vegetables, berries and other fruits, as well as fish, whole grains and unsaturated(不饱和的) fats.
The researchers observed 161 Finnish students. They were between the ages of 6 and 8(first grade to third grade). The researchers reviewed the children's diets and their reading ability using food diaries and standardized reading tests. A healthier diet was associated with better reading skills by third grade, regardless of how well the students could read in first grade, the researchers said.
“Another significant observation is that the associations of diet quality with reading skills were also independent of many other factors, such as socioeconomic status, physical activity, body fat and physical fitness,” said Eero Haapala, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Jyvaskyla.
Does that mean parents of picky eaters should be concerned about their child’s reading abilities? Not necessarily. Although this study found an association between the foods young children ate and their reading skills, it didn't prove cause-and-effect. Still, the researchers said parents, schools, governments and corporations all have an opportunity to enhance academic performance in schools by making healthy foods more available to children.
    24. In which aspect do children benefit from healthy diet?
    A. Building self-confidence. B. Developing reading skills.
    C. Gaining high grades. D. Having physical activity.
    25. What did the researchers take into consideration when observing the children?
    A. The differences of grades. B. The amount of sugar and meat.
    C. The performance in first grade. D. Food diaries and reading abilities.
    26. What do we know about picky eaters?
    A. Their parents should be worried. B. Their reading abilities are uncertain.
    C. Their diet is likely to have much sugar. D. Their performance in school is unsatisfied.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A mathematical method. B. A postdoctoral researcher.
    C. A scientific study. D. A learning program.
    C
Chemicals are a requirement to keep farmers competitive, kill pests, and produce at a scale that means they can have a good livelihood. However, the EU has banned 250 chemical pesticides, forcing farmers to come up with alternative solutions.
The answer to an environmentally friendly pest-free farm is ducks. This approach was viewed by thousands of people late last year but the images turned out to be false. However, after some digging, we have found that it is real in many other places. There are a number of farms in countries like China, Japan, and South Africa that release thousands of ducks on their crops in order to keep off smaller bugs.
A wine vineyard(葡萄园) called Vergenoegd in South Africa has a team of 1,200 ducks to defend its vineyards. The location of the place is beside a large lake which makes snails arrive in incredible numbers to the location. Left unattended, their vineyards would be devoured by of the snails. To combat this, the farmers hire some ducks. Every morning, the ducks will slowly go through the vineyards and will finish up by about 4 pm. A full day's work may sound pretty tough but the ducks receive good payment, all they can eat in snails and other insects.
The farm has been using ducks since 1984 and pesticides are not the only benefit. Ducks also provide great fertilizer as their poo is very high in nutrients and helps the vines to grow quickly and strongly.
While using ducks instead of pesticides seems to be a win-win situation all around, it does have its drawbacks. Most notably, the cost. At Vergenoegd, the ducks cost about nineteen thousand dollars per year to care for. The vineyard social media manager David Badenhorst says that using traditional chemical-based methods of pest control would be far less expensive, but of course much less sustainable. Farmers are working to come up with a label to attach their products to show it is more environmental awareness.
    28. What do we know about the images mentioned in paragraph 2?
    A. They were very popular. B. They proved to be real.
    C. They were taken in Japan. D. They polluted the environment.
    29. Why do the farmers use ducks in Vergenoegd?
    A. To make it home to more snails. B. To expand the size of the vineyard.
    C. To try a new way of raising ducks. D. To keep it away from harmful insects.
    30. What does the underlined word “devoured” in paragraph probably mean?
    A. Tidied. B. Eaten up. C. Decorated. D. Taken care of.
    31. What can we infer about traditional chemical-based method according to Badenhorst?
    A. It has more advantages. B. It'll gain more popularity later.
    C. It can be expensive soon. D. It fails to be environment-friendly.
    D
I am a book conservator. I work for The Gladys Brooks Book and Paper Conservation Laboratory, attending to the physical well-being of collections materials.
Currently I am working on a copy of The byrth of mankynde, otherwise named The womans booke, by Eucharius Roesslin, London, 1545. The book arrived in the lab broken in half. It had suffered from several unsuccessful attempts to repair the damage over the years. I carefully documented the original sewing pattern, so that I could resew it in the same way. Next, I dyed(给上色) leather to match the original color, which I will use to recreate the spine (书脊). After it is completed, the book will receive a new, custom cover, and will be ready to be used again.
I come from an art background, having received my bachelor degree in studio art from Bard College. It was really through an interest in materials (specifically paper, leather, etc) that I became involved in bookbinding—fastening books together and putting covers on them. Later I received a diploma, which led me to many wonderful experience in book conservation.
Working in conservation can be very satisfying: the outcome of our work is unusually obvious. Working to preserve materials for future readers can be creatively challenging, and requires flexible thinking. I like that it is a profession that combines working with your hands with an intellectual component. And of course, I am very happy to take a book that is too fragile to be handled and make it usable again.
Many books that come up to the conservation lab are too fragile to be handled by readers; our work makes these materials accessible. This is important not just for readers that come and use our collection in person, but also for preparation for digitization projects and exhibitions. However, some people think that all we do is repair bibles! This work is much more creative than a few binding repairs. Many bookbinders create books and book art in addition to repair work. They are artists who show their work in galleries and museums.
    32. What does the author think of his job?
    A. Easy. B. Ordinary. C. Satisfying. D. Flexible.
    33. What does the underlined phrase “the same way” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The way the book sewed. B. The pattern the book broke.
    C. The method of repairing spines. D. The material used for the cover.
    34. What does a book conservator do?
    A. Create art books. B. Repair broken bibles.
    C. Digitalize old books. D. Make books reusable.
    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. My love of the laboratory. B. My story about conserving books.
    C. My job as a book binder. D. My experience of studying binding.

    【参考范文】
    An agricultural activity
Last Sunday, an agricultural activity aimed at learning more knowledge of agriculture and getting close to nature was successfully carried out in our school.
Students of three grades and all teachers gathered at the playground at 8 am. After the speech delivered by headmaster to inspire us, all of us marched towards the green vegetable base in our town. There, we were so delighted to listen to the introduction, taking notes of the directions. Then, agricultural professors taught us useful knowledge about planting skills, vegetable growth process and so on. Finally, we are allowed to help water the plants.
The most unforgettable part is that all of us realize the importance of growing the green food. Though tired and hot, all of us have gained a lot.

W: Sure. Let me take your measurements and then you can tell me what style you'd like.
M: When do you think you can finish the suit?
W: Well, it depends on what style you want. Business suits usually take about a week to finish.
    (Text 8)
M: Hi, Siobhan. What are you up to these days? Are you still working in the shop?
W: No. I got bored with working behind a counter, so I started looking for a new job on the Internet last year. Recently I spent weeks looking through ads in the newspaper for a job as an office clerk, but I finally found this job with my friend’s help.
M: So what do you do now?
    W: I’m a flight attendant.
M: That’s great! How are you finding it?
W: I’m really enjoying it. I had to do six weeks of training before I could work on the planes. But the job is great fun. The only bad thing about it is working at night. Sometimes I have to go to work in the middle of the night.
    M: That’s awful.
W: It’s OK. We get a lot of annual vacation, so that makes up for it. I took some time off to go to Jamaica last month.
M: I’m glad it’s all going well for you.
    (Text 9)
W: What started you in computers?
M: I built my first computer when I was in junior high school. I was an enthusiastic reader, I studied everything I could get my hands on. Then I turned to building my own machine. From that point on, I was hooked.
W: Where do you see computers as going in the future?
M: This will be the time of distributed devices, some of which will be in your walls, some of which you will wear , some of which will be in your cars and throughout your house, and maybe one of which will be on your desk. Devices with processors in them will be everywhere. They will be connected, and they will look less like traditional PCs.
W: What kind of computer do you have now?
M: My primary machine is a heavily loaded PowerMac, which I use to write all my books and to do video editing. I've also got a Toshiba notebook which I use for all my work at the company and for e-mail.
W: There are critics who say that technology is dangerous and is moving too fast. What's your reaction?
M: There is criticism voiced in every generation. One can’t stop this kind of progress, but it can inspire us to develop the technology. That’s a good thing.
    (Text 10)
With senior year ending, I was really looking forward to college to be able to start over. This was something that I'd worked for a long time and I did put hard work into it. I was like over the moon to be admitted to Harvard. Once they released the fact that we would have all online classes because of the worldwide COVID-19, I was really disappointed. I was even crying to my mother about how upset I was. She comforted me a lot by saying that this was just a temporary situation and that things would get better gradually. For a lot of my classmates actually going to Harvard is the best option. I'm really lucky to be going to an institution like Harvard, because of the generous financial aid that Harvard has given us students. Because as a low-income student if I didn't have access to all of that, I probably would be staying home this term. So my plan is to be there on campus in the fall. I don't want to be have to give that up. As far as I know everyone has single rooms, and all classes are online. I’m looking forward to my new term and seeing my new teachers and classmates. More importantly, It is a new start of my life.
