Susan Boyle was born as the ninth child in a Catholic family. She suffered from learning disabilities ever since her birth because of her mother’s poor health.
School was difficult for Susan and she was bulled(凌辱) because of her different behaviour. Her siblings, who were much older, had life experiences that were unknown to their little sister. From the time of her birth, Susan was a screamer. The only really safe place that she would use as a repeat was her bedroom. There she would hang posters of her musical heroes on the walls and sing popular music into a hairbrush that she pretended was a microphone.
One by one her brother and sisters moved away from home and then Susan’s father died. This left her alone with an old mother and a cat. She tried volunteer work. Her best state of mind, however, was found when she was singing and so she would regularly join others in karaoke or pubs where she could show her skills and receive appreciation(欣赏)from the crowd.
When Susan announced at Christmas that she was planning to take part in the Britain’s Got Talent competition, her brothers and sisters tried to discourage her. It was a wonder that she was even able to do the audition(试唱) considering the troubles she faced just physically getting to the right place.
The Woman I Was Born to Be is a beautiful story written in the simple but humorous voice of the author, Susan Boyle. She tells her story from birth to the present in an interesting and educational manner.
I love this book ! In fact, I read the whole thing in one day! There is something in the stories that not only teaches the reader but also encourage us to reach for our dreams—no matter how impossible they may seem to be!

In the new Google age, the problem of child safety is not limited to the home, park and school, but into the online world. A recent cyber bullying(网络欺凌) study found that more than half of teenagers in the research are victims of cyber bullying. However, most of them didn’t tell their parents. Of course, it’s impossible for parents to protect their children any time, especially teenagers. Therefore it’s necessary that parents educate and train children to be careful, know offline and online dangers, threats, and report to their parents at once. I strongly recommend the ACT rules to parents to keep children safe.
Awareness
The first step for the safety of children is to remain connected with them and encourage two-way communication. Dinner table conversations, bedtime chats, or a walk in the evening are ideal times to have one-on-one conversations with children. If you are a careful and patient parent, you can easily have an antenna that your child is stressed. Also make it your business to pay attention to websites and apps often used by children while making efforts to know their friends.
C____________
I strongly recommend these two books to help start the conversation — No Means No by Jayneen Sanders (2015) and Amazing You by Gail Saltz (2008). Moreover, educate them about the dangers of sharing personal information or chat online with strangers. Children whose parents have talked with them about online/offline safety threats are more likely to report something unusual.
Taking action
Support from one or both parents is important in preventing cyber bullying and cheer children up. And let children know that parents will listen, believe and respond to their worries. Moreover, as teenage children spend more time away from parents, encourage them to trust themselves and be brave.
38. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Half of children all over the world experienced cyber bullying.
B. Children face more danger online than at home and at school.
C. Children has known enough about dangers online and offline.
D. Cyber bullying may happen without being noticed by parents.
39. What does the underlined word “antenna” mean?
A. 直觉. B. 疑虑. C. 遗憾. D. 体验.

The sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville made everybody sad as he was a nice and respected man and had made many friends in Dartmoor during the two years he was at Baskerville Hall.
Mr Barrymore, the butler(男管家), said that Sir Charles had been sad and stressed these days. He told Barrymore that he was planning to return to London the next day. Then, he went for his usual evening walk. He did not return, and at midnight, Barrymore went to look for him. He followed Sir Charles’s footprints along the path until he found his master’s body lying near the end of it.
A man called Murphy was on the moor at the time and said that he heard shouting, but he was drunk at the time and no one would believe what he said.

“Don’t tell anyone.” We hear these words when someone tells a secret to us. But it can be hard to keep a secret. We’re often tempted(诱惑) to “spill the beans”, even if we know we shouldn’t. According to Shah, professor at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may become a trouble. This is because people often have a drive to share it with someone.
But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when close people do not share it with each other.
Talkative people could let secrets slip out, but this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause stress for them, and make them talk about the secret.
Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you’d better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn’t give the information away. Shah also suggested that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret, you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn’t so secret any more.

37. Which of the following statements may be Shah’s advice?
A. Tell secrets to a person close to you in order not to feel guilty.
B. Put yourself in someone’s position and decide whether to tell a secret.
C. Don’t let the person whose secret is given up by you know the truth.
D. Share someone’s secret with as many people as possible.

For two long years I lived the life of a slave. I dreamt to be free day and night but it was never possible. My master liked to go fishing in a little boat and he always took me with him. A man called Moely and a young boy called Xury also went with us.
One day my master said to us “Some of my friends want to go fishing tomorrow. Get the boat ready.” So we put a lot of food and drink on the boat and the next morning we waited for my master and his friends. But when my master arrived, he was alone. “My friends don’t want to go fishing today” he said to me, “But you go with Moely and the boy and catch some fish for our supper tonight.” “Yes, master ” I answered quietly but inside I was excited, my chance came!
We took the boat out to sea. For a time we fished quietly and then I moved carefully behind Moely and knocked him into the water. “Swim!” I cried. My master liked to shoot sea birds so there were guns on the boat. Quickly I took one of these guns. “Go back to the shore, or I’ll shoot you through the head!” So Moely turned and swam back to the shore as quickly as he could. Xury looked at me with his mouth open because I had always been such a good and quiet servant. He did not know what kind of man I was! But Xury was happy to help me. “I’ll go over the world with you!” he cried.
Later, we managed to get more water and food to sail on. Several days had passed. Suddenly Xury saw a ship, we called and shouted, but the ship didn’t see us. Then I remembered the guns which made a lot of smoke. Luckily, the ship saw us and returned. The captain of the ship listened to my story, He was going to Brazil and agreed to help me. It’s long been a scientific dream: to inoculate(接种) people against terrible diseases before birth. Recently a Chinese biological researcher brought that possibility into reality. On Nov 26, He Jiankui from Shenzhen announced the birth of healthy twin girls earlier in the month. They came into being with gene editing(编辑) technology that protected them from HIV.
His announcement caused a heated discussion. In a signed open letter on Nov 27, 140 Chinese researchers in HIV/AIDS from China and abroad spoke ill of the “unethical”(不合伦理的) research. They questioned the need for He’s project. The letter said that there are many treatments that prevent babies born to HIV parents from being ill. In fact, there are many medicines for this. The research only went ahead when it was clear that children would have terrible diseases.
But the idea that research could find ways to change genes that cause cancer may be exciting, but it is also troubling. There are worries about babies designed to be with better looks and skills. People are also worried that gene editing changes the human genome(基因组), which means that changes will be handed onto future generations and spread through the population. Such research also raises ethical questions. If successful baby gene editing technology becomes real, who will be able to use it? Will it be only the wealthy? And if people live much longer lives, will there be an influence on the size of the world population? Those questions are difficult to answer.
But one thing is certain: If the cures can affect not just those who are treated, but the humans as a whole, it’s important to make sure that scientific developments aren’t getting too far ahead of our understanding of how to use them.
42. Why does the writer introduce the birth of healthy twin girls in Paragraph 1?
A. To announce the news. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To attract readers’ interest. D. To make a good beginning.
43. What did the 140 researchers think of He’s project?
A. They spoke highly of the project.
B. The project was really important.

44. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The public paid no attention to the birth of twin girls with gene editing technology.
B. So far, taking many medicines is the only way to prevent babies from HIV.
C. Gene editing technology may have a lasting influence on the future generations.
D. Humans have succeeded in controlling the use of gene editing technology.

The name of our galaxy, the Milky Way, comes from its appearance. It’s a milky white band of glowing light that spreads across the night sky. If you look up at the evening sky, there’s a good chance you will not be able to see what your grandmother saw when she was a little girl. A new study says that nearly 80 percent of people in North America can’t see the Milky Way because of light pollution.
The most light-polluted country in the world is Singapore where researchers found that people living in the country never have the chance to experience true darkness. Other countries with large percentages of people living under such skies include Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
Too much light has a direct effect on human physiology and behavior. It can also destroy our sleep cycle. What’s more, it also affects wildlife. For example, baby turtles may not swim into the ocean because of street lights near shorelines
In the U.S., some communities have been taking action on light pollution but in developing countries, people still want to make bigger, brighter light, like LED lights. They can save energy, but on the other hand they will increase light pollution rapidly in fact.
There are still people that can remember when they used to be able to see the Milky Way, when they would walk outside at night, but those are becoming fewer and fewer.
Nighttime natural scenery needs protection just like daytime scenery. Don’t let the Light pollution rob us of the chance to experience the wonder of a natural night sky.
34. Why do we call galaxy the Milky Way?
A. Because our galaxy looks like that.
B. Because we look up at the evening sky.
C. Because Grandma often tells us the story of it.

Su Dongpo respected and missed his teacer, so he built the Guilin Hall behind the Pingshan Hall to memorize Ou Yangxiu. Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel “Alice in Wonderland” in detail.
The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice runs after him, and that is where her adventures begin.
In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.
Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a situation which makes people feel puzzled. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distractions(分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.
Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares(野兔)have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating(交配)season. Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of the two, mad as a Hatter is more common.
Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman who is called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.
42. Which of the following situations best fits the expression “to fall down a rabbit hole”?
A. When Jack was sitting in the study, he got bored with the homework and felt sleepy.
B. When Sue turned On the TV, she chose to watch her favourite programme as usual.
C. When Jim was looking for a sport book online, he lost himself in reports on superstars.
D. When Lily was thinking about how to solve a math problem, she came up with a good idea.
43. According to the passage, the expression “to be mad as a March Hare” .
A. describes how hares behave in March
B. shows hares’ characteristics in a funny way
C. is used more often than the expression mad as a Hatter
D. has the same meaning as the expression mad as a Hatter
44. Which of the following characters wants others to obey his or her orders in every situation?
A. Alice. B. The March Hare. C. The Hatter. D. The Queen of Hearts.
45. The writer mainly wants to ________in this passage.
A. introduce a famous novel and its language style
B. introduce a famous writer Lewis Carroll and his novels
C. explain some English expressions from a famous novel
D. explain why many expressions in English come from novels

An eight-year-old girl heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money.
When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, “Only a miracle can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully.
She hurried to a drugstore (药店) with the money in her hand.
“And what do you want?” asked the salesman.
“It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“Pardon?” said the salesman.
“My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile.
“Listen, if it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.” said the girl.
A well-dressed man heard it and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”

“Well, what luck,” smiled the man. “$ 1.11, the price of a miracle for little brother.”
He took up the girl’s hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Why do people cry? What are tears(眼泪)? Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions.
Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who has studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings.” explains Vingerhoets. "Especially when we feel helpless"
Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex(复杂的),"says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from the USA.“It seems that tears serve to get help and support from others.” She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.
Vingerhoets . “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood,he says. “That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. Tears were a safer way to be noticed by others. “In this case, it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help,” he says.
Mngerhoets and Bylsma do lots of studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover. “It’s surprising,” she says, “how much we still don’t know.”

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals
Can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior?
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called
the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, hides its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub
jays are also thieves. They watch where others hide their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, take out the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don’t make nests(巢). Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents (养父母)feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as
bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying "You can't fool Mother Nature." But maybe you can't trust her, either.
42. A plover protects its young from a predator by _________
A. getting closer to its young B. driving away the adult predator
C. leaving its young in another nest D. pretending to be wounded
43.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

B. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
C. Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.
D. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
44. By "Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky" , the writer means _______.
A. chimps are ready to attack others B. chimps are sometimes dishonest
C. chimps are afraid of the winners D. chimps can be selfish too
45. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Do animals lie? B. Does Mother Nature fool animals?
C. How do animals learn to lie? D. How does honesty help animals survive?

D. explain why many expressions in English come from novels

42. What kind of tears will roll down your cheeks when something gets into your eyes?
A. Reflex tears. B. Basal tears. C. Emotional tears. D. Joyful tears.
43. Which word can be put into “___ ____ ”in Paragraph 4?

45. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.
