四、阅读理解(共10小题;每小题1分,共10分)
A
Just as there are many different spoken languages, there are also many different sign languages. People can also use sign languages to talk about actions, feelings and ideas.
One kind of sign languages that many people know is the manual alphabet(手语字母), or finger spelling. But people can only use this kind of sign language for existing(存在的) names. With finger spelling, people use a different hand sign for each letter(字母) of the alphabet to spell a word, letter by letter.
You need to do finger spelling with your dominant(占支配地位的) hand --- your right hand if you are right-handed or your left hand if you are left-handed. For most signs, the palm of the hand(手掌) should face outward(向外) to the person whom you are signing to. People sign most letters when holding the hand still, but a few letters like “j” and “z” are signed by moving fingers. If you would like to learn the manual alphabet, you can also go to the website funbrain.com. You will find an activity for spelling letters with hands there.

You make friends all through your life. As a child, you make friends with the children who always play games with you; they are those who are as smart as you are and have the same ideas, likes and dislikes as you do. Over time, you make more friends later in your life but they are not the same. The relationship(关系) you have had with your childhood friends is unique.
Childhood friendship is innocent(天真无邪的), and free from conditions(条件), which is why it is so important. You never forget the first friends you make. You are thankful for their help when in trouble. The moments you spend with them are special and cheerful. However, sometimes you get so busy with your life now that you don’t have time to keep relationships. You find it seem difficult to find time for meeting your old friends.
Send your childhood friends cards or gifts on their birthdays. They will feel thankful that you still keep them in mind. You can also call them or invite them for a friendly talk. It will make them feel that you still care about them and your feelings are still the same. If your guys live in the same town, you can plan to have lunch or tea parties together. Be a resource (源头) of pleasure and love for your friends as you were in your childhood.

We were standing at the top of a tower(塔). My father had brought me to this high tower in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
“Look down, Elsa,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw several streets leading to the square. ‘‘See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”
Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged(乞求) my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not help. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.
At school the next day, I poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She tried one spoonful and sputtered. “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother promised that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible way. Father’s wise words always remind(提醒) me that there is more than one way to the square.

五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题1分,共5分)
The great pyramids(金字塔) of Egypt were built more than 4000 years ago as tombs(坟墓) for the kings of that time. In ancient Egypt(古埃及), people believed that when the kings died they became gods in the next life.
To be able to do this, the kings needed their bodies. So their bodies were kept and placed somewhere safe when they died. These kept bodies were called mummies(木乃伊).
The Egyptians thought that pyramids would be a safe place to put the mummies of the kings. They believed that placing the mummies in pyramids would help them to reach heaven, where they would make their new home.
The pyramids were not only tombs for the kings, but also wonders of construction. For thousands of years, they were the largest buildings in the world. It wasn’t until the 20th century that bigger buildings were made. Even today, there aren’t many buildings that are taller than them.
