For a long time, "made in China" made people think of cheap, low-quality goods. China was just the world's factory. But now Chinese brands are going global and being known to the whole world.
Time magazine recently showed a list of the 100 most influential (有影响力的)companies in the world. Several Chinese companies were included, such as tech giants Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent. DJI, TikTok and DiDi Chuxing.
These companies are shaping the world with new high technology. Time reported that DJI holds 70 percent of the global drone (无人机)market. This year, it launched a new drone with a set of glasses that gives users a first-person view of their drone's flight. TikTok has become one of the most popular apps in the US with its never-ending list of videos. Some 50 million US users spend an average of 46 minutes on it every day.
Chinese fashion has also interested global customers. In 2011, Chinese sports shoes brands Feiyue. Huili and Li-Ning got international attention. More recently, Shein has become one of the most popular Chinese fast fashion brands overseas. In 2020, its operating income (营业收入) reached over 10 billion dollars, an increase of 100 percent over the year before. Global Times reported. Many European customers say Shein is a fashionable brand that they can afford and has high quality.
In the future, Chinese brands will continue to develop. Thanks to a bigger market, convenient transportation and modern factories, "This is the best time for the development of local brands, '' Yan Qiang, a partner with Beijing-based Hejun Consulting, told Global Times.

Imagine using your coat to surf the internet, send and receive messages, and even read a map. Yes, you read that correctly——your coat.
It may sound silly, but it*s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai's Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display (数字显示屏).
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make ''digital cloth''. After testing different materials, they chose two that worked: a silver-plated yam that can light up and a kind of thread (纺线)that conducts (传导)electricity.
The results have been amazing. It's not only wearable and foldable, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry tries in a washing machine and folded 10, 000 times, the cloth remained almost unchanged.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language problems or disabilities.
In one test, Peng's team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been having a competition or listening to light music. The waves were then translated into messages like “nervous" or , "relaxed" and shown on the cloth. This could help deaf-mute (聋哑的)people “talk” to each other in the future.
"We hope that new materials will shape future electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them. ', Peng told AFP.
23. What does "a silver-plated yarn" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A kind of material. B. A kind of technology.
C. A new product. D. A scientific project.
24. What might we be able to do with our coat in the future according to the passage?
A. To send messages with friends. B. To make the disabled healthy.
C. To help us get on with our friends. D. To drive our cars in new places.
25. What does the underlined word "This" in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The volunteer taking the test. B. A competition or light music.
C. Translating brainwaves into messages. D. The cloth with words.
26. What is the best title for the text?
D
In today's ever-changing world, most of us know the importance of protecting our cultural heritage (遗产). But what do we save? A wonderful historical building? An important work of art? They're important for sure, but what about our songs, stories, ceremonies and traditional practices? These intangible pails of our culture can be just as meaningful as anything we build or create. Shouldn't they also be protected for future generations (代)to experience and enjoy?
The answer, according to UNESCO (联合国教科文组织), is yes. In 2008 the first intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) list is published. It is to record living customs and traditions which are endangered.
Today, there are more than 400 customs and traditions on the ICH list. One recent entry shows us just how rich and different practices are chosen for protection. The culture of the Jeju Haenyeo (济州岛海女), the women divers of Jeju Island in South Korea, was added to the list in 2016. These amazing women dive 10m under the sea to get food—without the use of breathing machine. They hold their breath for about one minute every dive. Knowledge about diving practices is passed down from generation to generation within families. Yet today, most of the divers are getting old. but younger women are not ready to take their place, meaning the practice is in danger of disappearing.
Jeju Haenyeo is just an example of a great many cultural practices on the ICH list. And yet, while most of us would agree that UNESCO's efforts are valuable, I find myself questioning the fairness and usefulness of the ICH list. Why are some customs and practices included while others are not? Who decides this? Does the list make a difference in the long term? It may already be too late to start the protection, but for the advantages of future generations, I believe we must never stop trying.
27. What does the underlined word “intangible" most probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Not being able to be touched or seen. B. Not worth a lot of money.
C. Not very meaningful or special. D. Not interested by modern people.
28. What records can we find on the ICH list?
A. Historical buildings. B. Great pieces of artwork.
C. Disappearing ceremonies. D. Endangered animals.
29. Why does the writer use the example of Jeju Haenyeo?
A. To show the newest entry on the list. B. To show the importance of the protection.
C. To show the richness of entries on the list. D. To show the value of a certain culture.
30. What does the writer think of the influence of ICH list?
A. It does help a lot but costs too much money.
B. It may have problems but we should still try.
C. The governments shouldn't decide what to protect.
D. The writer personally doesn't take interest in it.

Dear Jack,
Everything's going well and I'm glad to receive your email. It's a great idea to visit China in late January because everywhere will be filled with happiness at that time for the festival.
The Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival for Chinese people. It falls on January 1st in the lunar calendar and the celebrations last for about two weeks. During the festival, every house is decorated with red things like couplets, paper cuttings and lanterns in order to drive the monster Nian away and they are also symbols of good luck. Also, people in North China will make dumplings which means reunion.
Hope to see you soon!
