Many doctors say that sleep can change our health. If we want our bodies to work well, we need sleep. If people don’t have enough sleep, they can suffer from depression(抑郁)and illnesses such as heart disease.
The most obvious effect of not having enough sleep is to make us weaker and it makes it harder to fight illness; in other words, people who do not sleep enough are more likely to get sick or ill.
Studies in the USA have found that 60 percent of the adults often have sleep problems. Among them, more than 20 percent say that they feel sleepy in the daytime and that this makes their lives difficult. At least 40 million people in the USA suffer from sleep problems that need treatment, but very few people actually go to a doctor about it.
So what are the things that affect sleep? Well, finally, there is noise. If there are noises such as barking dripping(滴水的)taps or loud music, you’ll probably find it difficult to sleep. What is interesting is that women seem to notice noise more than men, while young children do not notice noise so much as adults.
It you are sitting in a chair, you will find it very difficult to sleep. But you will probably have no problem falling asleep if you are lying down. This is another thing that affects sleep. We need to be horizontal and we need to have enough space.
A third thing affecting sleep is temperature. You may have noticed that you have difficulty sleeping if it is very hot or cold.
Altitude can change the way we sleep. If you are at an altitude of over 4,000m, you need to breathe differently because you don’t have as much oxygen. It will take you about two weeks to get used to this.
So, if you want to sleep well, please do not exercise before you go to bed. Do not drink alcohol or drinks like coffee. Do try to relax. We hope this helps. Sleep well.

    A. The mother B. The father

    Andy’s South American ____59_____
March 16th,6 p.m. Today is our last day in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Tomorrow Max and I are going to Coroico, a town about 60 kilometers from here. We’re taking a bus along the North Yungas Road, also known as “Death Road”. It goes along steep hillsides and cliffs. People call it the most dangerous road in the world! There are hundreds of accidents on it every year.
March 17th, 9 a.m. I’ve found out more about the North Yungas Road. It’s only about 3 meters wide, and in some parts there’s a drop of at least 600 meters. That’s more than half a kilometer! There’s no barrier(屏障)along the side of the road. And there’s often rain or fog, which makes it even more dangerous.
I found out another thing. Here in Bolivia, they drive on the right side of the road. But on the North Yungas Road, they drive on the left. Why? Because this means that the driver on the dangerous side of the road can see the edge of the road more easily. The drivers seat is on the left side of the bus, so the driver is close to the edge. Our bus leaves in one hour!
March 17th,8 p.m. We got to Coroico safely. It was terrifying sometimes! But there was no rain or fog. Our driver told us the road is safer than it used to be, and he’s driven it many times before. He didn’t drive fast, and we never went too close to the edge. Thank you, Mr.Bus Driver!

    A. by car alone B. on foot C. with his friend Max D. with his driver

A Fun Plant Experiment to Try at Home!

Without water, plants would die. Do you know how water gets from the roots of a plant to the rest of the plant? The water travels through tiny tubes that form pathways to all parts of the

plant. This is similar to how blood flows in our bodies. And here is an experiment to prove it.

    Materials
    l a celery stick l a sharp knife

l a glass of water l some red food colour

    60
Put a few drops of the red food colour in the glass of water.
    1) Cut the bottom of the celery stick and place the celery in the water.
    2) Leave the celery stick in the glass of water for several hours.
    3) Remove the celery stick and cut it into pieces horizontally, that is, across the stern(茎).

    Observation
Red food colour is present in all cross section from the bottom of the celery stick right up to the leaves.

    Explanation
The water, along with the red food colour, has been transported up the celery stick through the tiny tubes in it. The experiment, therefore, proves that tiny tubes in plants enable water to reach all parts of the plant. The red food colour shows where the water has travelled to in the celery stick.

    The Magic in Music
Does the music we listen to affect us in one way or another? The following questions and answers may give us some ideas.
    CAN MUSIC HELP US SLEEP?
Obviously, yes! In a study, music was shown to cure insomnia (the condition of being unable to sleep). Over 80% of the people taking part in the study became better sleepers after three weeks of listening to classical music at bedtime. In another study, half of the people over the age of 60 who had difficulty falling asleep reported that they became good sleepers after a few weeks. So, if you’re battling to fall asleep, make yourself a 45-minute playlist of slow, calming music.
    CAN IT TAKE PAIN AWAY?
Well, maybe not totally, but music has been shown to help us feel better. One experiment asked people to hold their hands in freezing cold water. The people who were listening to music could handle the pain for longer, especially if they got to choose the music themselves. The same was found at dentists’ rooms - patients felt less pain if they got to choose the music they listened to.
CAN MUSIC MAKE US ACT DIFFERENTLY?
For sure! Think about the music you hear when you’re at the shops or at a restaurant. Studies show that playing slow music at a restaurant makes you eat slower. The pace of music in a shopping center determines (decides on) how fast people walk - you take more time to browse (look at things in a shop) if the music is calmer. Some studies have been shown that music can influence what you buy. One test done by psychologists in England in 1999 changed the background music near displays of German and French wines. When they played German music, the German wine sold twice as much. When French music was used, The French wine sold five times better!
    59. Music affects us in many ways except in ________.

    Mapping out the future
Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another state. Before we started on our road trip, we packed up the car with snacks, water, and music. Thankfully, we also packed our GPS. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. But our trusty GPS pulled up a map of the area and got us back on track in no time. It made me wonder: Who creates maps in the first place? After some searching online, I learned that the people responsible for mapping out roads, mountains, oceans, and other places around the world are called cartographers. I did some reading about the career. Here’s what I found:
    What does a cartographer do?
Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study and interpret(诠释) geographic information. They use this information to make detailed maps of places around the globe. Some of these maps are digital. They are often used in GPS systems. Other maps are printed in books. To do their work, cartographers put together information from many different places. They also use ground surveys. Some do ground surveys themselves. Most cartographers, however, rely on surveyors for this important information. Surveyors collect information for mapmaking. They measure land, air space, and water areas.
What does it take to be a cartographer?
Most cartographers have a bachelor’s(学士) degree. The degree might be in cartography, geography, or something similar. Students who are interested in becoming cartographers should learn as much as they can about geography. It also helps to take courses in maths and computer science.
With the rise of computer-based tools such as GPS systems, cartographers need stronger computer skills than they did in the past.
    How much do cartographers make?
The average yearly salary for cartographers is $54,000.The lowest 10 percent earns less than $32,000.The top 10 percent earns more than $92,000.
    63
In the U.S., job opportunities for cartographers are expected to grow. This is due to the increasing use of maps in the armed forces. Also, digital maps have increasingly become a main part of many GPS systems and Web sites.
Based on what I’ve read about cartographers, I’d say that their work is very important to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost, I’ll be sure to thank a cartographer!

    D. show that the GPS is not always reliable
    60. The author talked about cartographers from ____________ aspects.
    A. three B. four C. five D. six
61.Surveyors can do all these following things except ______________.
    A. do ground surveys B. collect information
    C. do some mapping D. do some measuring
    62. Elizabeth begins working as a cartographer with a starting salary of $34,000. Every year, her salary increases by $1,500. If she continues in this position, her salary will be __ for her 12th year of work.
