You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen(新生), you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common worry with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are possibly worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.
24. What does the underlined word “orientation” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Game. B. Discussion.

26. Extracurricular activities mainly help students _________?

C. develop friendships. D. improve their learning ability.
27. Who is the passage written for?
A. Freshmen at high school. B. Freshmen’s parents.

Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by the College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’ academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles and other troubles. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries(界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet(二重奏)with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally(口头上), they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
32. What can we learn about education with music classes?
A. It allows schools to make more profits.
B. It leads to a lot of emotional problems easily.
C. It has a great influence on the culture of the country.
D. It helps students to improve their schoolwork.
33. What do the two studies seem to show?
A. Not all students take part in music lessons.
B. Students with great success like to attend music lessons.
C. Music plays an important role in students’ success.
D. Students having music classes are better in all lessons.
34. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that_______.
A. music makes cross-country communication possible.
B. different cultures have different styles of music.
C. Japan has a good international relationship with America.
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Get Music Back B. Music Education in Schools
C. Music—a Bridge to Understanding D. The Importance of Listening to Music

In China, traveling by train is a common way to visit new places and go back to one’s hometown during holidays. 36 It wasn’t always that way, though.
37 Later, many railway companies started up and competed with each other to build new railway routes. Trains became a symbol of progress, with New York City’s Grand Central Station becoming a major cultural landmark(地标). 38 For example, Johnny Cash wrote a song called Folsom Prison Blues.
But little by little, railways were replaced by highways as “car culture” took over the US. China would go on to use trains even more widely than the US. 39 It allows people to travel fast with ease. This is especially obvious during Chunyun, when China’s train stations are crowded with thousands of people who are trying to get home.
I had never traveled by train until I moved to China. My first trip by train was from Beijing to Tianjin by high-speed train. It was amazing how quickly I could get there-just half an hour. Since then, I’ve taken the train to lots of other cities—Shanghai, Chongqing and Shenzhen. It’s always a good time. 40 And for some reason, even instant noodles taste better on the train than they do anywhere else.
A. Musicians even created music works about trains.
B. The US railway system started to grow in 1826.
C. People on the train tend to be friendly and happy to chat.
D. China’s railway network connects the entire country.
E. But in the US, traveling by train is a very old tradition.
F. But there are many differences between Chinese and US railways.
G. Traveling on a high-speed train costs more than traveling on a normal train.

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework.” Miss Walker called as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who was good at everything. Jenny sighed(叹气). As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny knew she could just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. As soon as Jenny arrived home, she put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I am going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So may be Lee’s watch really DID have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已为你写好。

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
Paragraph 1
Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. Jenny didn’t answer. How could she explain about the watch and its magic? No one could understand. No one could believe. “But I saw you wearing it yesterday,” Miss Walker gently reminded him. For a moment Lee remained silent and then he apologized he had just remembered that. Jenny was relieved saying she had found it on the way home and decided to return it after the speech. Everybody was confused and asked why. Jenny was speechless again.
Paragraph 2
Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first. Jenny walked slowly to the front. She couldn’t think properly. All around her, a sea of faces were watching. She felt so frightened and the watch didn’t seem magical at all. Suddenly she saw Miss Walker’s encouraging eyes. Jenny took a deep breath. “I’m going to talk about swimming…” Ten minutes later the whole class stood up clapping for Jenny’s wonderful speech. Jenny smiled as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

51.D 解析: simply意为“仅仅”。根据上文如果他没有那份工作可知,那他有的就只是时间。
52.B 解析:此处以作者在大学的经历为戒。
53.A 解析:理解语境可知,此处指“辞职”。
