You can easily do it with one of the area’s many walking tours. Or visit the Museum of Rum for a taste of the island’s most popular wine. You might come across a clothing shop offering some classic finds!

36-year-old Juan Dual likes to joke that he’s empty inside. Juan’s story began when he was only 13. It was then that he was diagnosed with a terrible disease, which left him with a 99.8% chance of developing cancer of the digestive system. At age 19, right after finishing high-school, Juan underwent a tough operation to take away his colon and rectum. Sadly, it was only the beginning. By age 28, Juan’s disease had affected his stomach and gallbladder so he had to go under the knife again.
Having just recovered from several serious surgeries, Juan Dual decided to accept the invitation of some friends of his parents and travel to Japan. It was there that things started to change for the better. He didn’t speak a word of Japanese, so he spent most of his time walking his dog. One day, the dog pulled harder, and Juan realized that he was still able to jog, and he started to do just that.
Months later, he found himself working in a small, peaceful town in England. There was little in terms of entertainment, but the town was surrounded by hills, so he devoted even more of his time to running. He befriended some like-minded folks and told them what he’d been through, and they seemed amazed at the fact that he was still alive, let alone that he was pushing himself to exercise. That’s when the idea of focusing on motivating others took root in his mind.
With the help of Pepa, a nutritionist, Juan Dual slowly relearned how to eat to keep his energy level high enough to sustain him during physical activity. Eight months after his last operation, he finished the Barcelona half marathon in two hours. He then started training for mountain running and ultra-marathons.
4.Why does Juan Dual say he is empty inside?
A.Because he has no desire for anything. B.Because he doesn’t have much knowledge.
C.Because he always suffers from great hunger. D.Because many of his organs have been removed.
5.What made Juan Dual aware that he could still run?
A.His parents’ support. B.A walk with his dog.
C.The idea of challenging himself. D.His quick recovery from surgeries.
6.When did Juan Dual decide to inspire others with his story?
A.After finishing the Barcelona half marathon.
B.After being introduced to a nutritionist named Pepa.
C.After sharing it with his friends in an English town.
D.After making friends with people with similar sufferings.
7.Which of the following words can best describe Juan Dual?
A.Ambitious and intelligent. B.Inspiring and responsible.
C.Unfortunate but determined. D.Confident but stubborn.
Dengue is a very painful illness spread by mosquitoes. In severe cases, dengue can even be deadly. Dengue is a serious disease affecting people in around 120 countries. It can cause high fevers, headaches, and severe pain. It’s caused by a virus spread by bites from mosquitoes. Therefore, dengue is more common in warm areas. Every year, roughly 390 million people get dengue, and as many as 25,000 die from it.
Now scientists seem to have found a way to protect humans from dengue by first protecting mosquitoes. Dengue fever is caused by a virus. Though it may seem strange to think of it this way, the mosquitoes that spread the dengue virus are also infected with it. But the virus doesn’t seem to hurt the mosquitoes.
Wolbachia is a kind of bacteria commonly found in many insects. In some insects, Wolbachia can keep some viruses from duplicating themselves, which is how viruses grow inside a body. Wolbachia isn’t naturally found in mosquitoes. But by infecting these mosquitoes with Wolbachia, scientists can keep the mosquitoes from catching the dengue virus. Even better, the young mosquitoes coming from the eggs of the infected mosquitoes also carry Wolbachia.
Researchers working with the World Mosquito Program (WMP) ran a 27-month study in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. They split a 10-square-mile area up into 24 smaller areas. In half of the areas, the scientists did nothing. In the other half, they set out containers of eggs from mosquitoes that had Wolbachia. They did this every two weeks for just 4 to 6 months.
Ten months later, 80% of the mosquitoes in the treated areas carried Wolbachia. The researchers report the number of dengue cases in the treated areas was reduced by 77% and that the number of people needing hospital care for dengue dropped by 86%.
Because the results of the experiment were so good, the WHO has placed Wolbachia-infected mosquito eggs in all parts of Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. The WHO says that within a year, their efforts will protect 2.5 million people against dengue and that their efforts will be turned into a program that can be repeated worldwide.
8.What kind of disease is dengue?
A.It is likely to cause death. B.It causes no pain but fevers.
C.It happens less often in hot areas. D.It hurts both people and mosquitoes.
9.The underlined word “duplicating” in paragraph 3 most probably means “________”.
A.worsening the harm of B.expanding the size of
C.increasing forces of D.making copies of
10.What can be inferred about the method from the figures listed in paragraph 5?
A.Its wide use. B.Its effectiveness. C.Its complexity. D.Its easy operation.
11.What’s the WHO’s attitude towards the method?
A.Ambiguous. B.Positive. C.Tolerant. D.Skeptical.
In Australia, plenty of wild things can bite or sting(刺伤) you. Strangely enough, one of them is a tree. Now scientists have figured out what makes the tree’s sting so bad.
The rainforests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging tree known as Dendrocnide. Many people call it the gympie-gympie tree—a name given to the tree by native Australians. It’s covered with sharp, needle-like hairs that carry poison. If you touch a gympie-gympie tree, you won’t forget it anytime soon. The pain can stay with you for hours, days or weeks. In some cases, it’s been reported to stay for months.
Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting. Now researchers at the University of Queensland have discovered what makes this stinging plant so painful. After carefully studying different kinds of gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce. This allowed them to identify a group of chemicals that they believed was responsible for the pain.
The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”. Sure enough, when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked(舔) at the places where they’d been injected, indicating that they hurt in those places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found that they formed a knot-like shape. The shape makes the chemicals very stable, which helps explain why the pain stays so long.
The knot-like shape of the gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and cone snails. The scientists were surprised to see three very different kinds of life all using similar poisons. Spiders and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures. It’s not clear how stinging helps the gympie-gympie tree.
Though the tree’s sting may stop some animals from eating it, it doesn’t stop all animals. Beetles and pademelons (small relatives of the kangaroo) are able to eat the plant without trouble.
12.Why is a touch on the stinging tree unforgettable?
A.Because it has so unusual an appearance. B.Because it is extremely rare in existence.
C.Because touching it creates a quite strange feeling. D.Because the pain caused by it doesn’t go away quickly.
13.What do scientists fail to find out about the stinging tree?
A.How it produces poisons. B.What poisons it produces.
C.How it benefits from the sting. D.The consequences of its sting.
14.What does the text imply about the stinging tree?
A.It produces the same poisons as spiders. B.Poisonous as it is, it also has natural enemies.
C.Animals are wise enough to stay away from it. D.Only one chemical in it causes pain to the toucher.
15.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Scientists Discover Stinging Tree's Secret B.Caution: Stinging Tree Can Bite and Poison You
C.Scientists Discover a Strange Species in Australia D.Effective Ways to Avoid Being Hurt by Stinging Tree

Benefits of Exercising Regularly
Doing exercise on a regular basis is necessary in our daily life. Everyone benefits from exercising regularly, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. For one thing, not only can regular exercise help us keep a healthy body weight, sleep better and reduce our health risks, but it can strengthen our bones and muscles as well, thus enabling us to build a strong body. For another, exercising regularly helps keep our thinking and judgment sharp as we age. It can also reduce our risk of depression and anxiety.
As far as I’m concerned, however busy we are, we should try every means to spare a certain amount of time for exercise. Only in this way can we stay healthy both physically and mentally.
