    一、阅读选择

You know that classics like Little Women and To Kill a Mockingbird started as novels. But you probably didn't know that these other famous movies also came from books.

    Hidden Figures

This film told the story of real-life Katherine Johnson and other female African-American mathematicians who helped drive the United States into space in the 1960s. It was actually based on a 2016 nonfiction book and the movie did boost sales of the book.

    Forrest Gump

The 1994 movie which was based on the book by Winston Groom won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the star Tom Hanks. Although the movie's critical and box-office success gave the book a huge boost, it's the film that made its mark on pop culture history.

    The Girl on the Train

Paula Hawkin's psychological thriller, about a woman on a train who thinks she sees something strange out of the window, was a huge success. But unlike the fast-paced, can't-be-put-down quality of the novel, the movie was boring.

    Field of Dreams

It’s hard to describe the plot of this movie: Ray Kinsella hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his Iowa cornfield, and what happens next explores the themes of lost dreams, childhood heroes, and healing the pain of the past. The 1989 movie adherest W. P. Kinsella's 1982 original, Shoeless Joe, but cuts out some extra characters.

1Which is the best choice for a person who loves math?

    AHidden Figures. BForrest Gump.

CThe Girl on the Train. DField of Dreams.

2Who has won the Academy Award for Best Actor according to the text?

    ATom Hanks. BWinston Groom.

    CKevin Costner. DW.P. Kinsella.

3What is special about Field of Dreams?

AIt is a romantic comedy. BIt presents several themes.

CIt shows all the figures in Shoeless Joe. DIt was released in 1982 for the first time.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.

However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.

Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive! It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.

I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. AWe didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).

Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”

4What does the underlined word"aversion"in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    AInterest BResponsibility.

    CDislike DMisunderstanding.

5What first made the author look forward to math class?

AMr. A’s attitude. BHe interest in math.

CHer friends’ encouragement. DThe top achievers in her class.

6How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A?

AIt was straight. BIt was awkward.

CIt was challenging. DIt was impressive.

7How did the author change in math?

    AShe made slow progress.

BShe fell in love with math.

CShe became a straight-A math student.

DShe became comfortable with difficult math questions.

In the movie Alice in Wonderland, Alice comes across a Cheshire cat and asks the cat which road she should take. The cat responds, “Well, that depends on where you're trying to get to.” Alice replies, “I don't know.” The cat responds, “Then any road will do.”

You see, knowing where you're going increases your chances dramatically of getting there, and there is no better way of "GETTING THERE" than setting your goals for the upcoming year. Think of your goals as destinations and the action steps as your GPS guiding and directing you. If you are like many other people, for years you have resisted the need to set goals and even laughed at the thought that setting goals and, even more importantly, committing them to writing have positive effects on your life. However, a closer look might convince you that setting goals is a sensible thing to do.

In 1979, a class of Harvard MBA students was asked: Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made an action plan to accomplish them? The following will astonish you. Only 3 percent of the class had written goals and a plan in place, 13% just had goals, and an amazing 84% had no specific goals at all.

Ten years later the members of the class were interviewed once again and the following results will no doubt give the reason for our setting goals. The findings were that the 13% who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84% who had no goals at all. And the 3% percent who had clear, written goals with a plan to achieve them were achieving ten times as much as the entire 97% combined.

Goal setting will increase your chances of arriving successfully at your destination. Remember, always set SMART goals. Goals should be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound!

8Why does the author mention Alice in Wonderland?

ATo criticize those with no goals.  BTo show its popularity.

CTo recommend it to readers.  DTo introduce the topic.

9What does the underlined word "them" refer to?

    AGoals.  BEffects.  CPeople.  DAction steps.

10What did the second interview find out?

APeople with goals were certain to succeed. BAction helped with the realization of goals.

CPeople with goals earned the most. DThe income gap among students was bigger.

11Which of the following can best serve as the title?

AWhy we set goals. BWho can achieve success.

CWhat an action plan is. DHow to set SMART goals.

When your pen is broken, the batteries (电池) in your toys run out, or you have some leftover food, what will you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all of these pieces of rubbish need to be sorted (分类) separately.

Rubbish sorting is a big problem worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it. Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account (账户)” service. Account owners get points by correctly sorting their rubbish. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards or other products. The city is asking all people living there to sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.

Wet waste is something you don't want but that pigs can eat. Plastics, glass, paper and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and bulbs. Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin.

Many other Chinese cities are also sorting their rubbish in this way. For example, Shenzhen has been doing this since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.

In fact, there are still many workers specially working for sorting rubbish by hand in China. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late for every Chinese to learn how to sort rubbish properly and protect the environment.

If you don't sort your rubbish, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be buried together.

These landfills can take up much ground that could be used for planting. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries or used mobile phones, can cause pollution. Other pieces of rubbish, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

12Shanghai creates the “green account” service in order to ________.

Awork with the Alipay app. Bpunish those who don't sort rubbish.

Cexchange useful products. Dencourage people to sort their rubbish.

13After drinking up the milk, you can put the milk box into a “________ waste” bin.

    Awet. Brecyclable.

    Charmful. Ddry.

14The last paragraph is mainly about ________.

Awhy we should sort rubbish properly.

Bwhere our rubbish can be dealt with.

Chow some waste can be recycled.

    Dwhat waste can cause pollution.

15Which is NOT TRUE about rubbish sorting in China according to this passage?

AThere is still a long way to go in rubbish sorting.

BThere are many workers sorting rubbish by hand.

CStudents have to take waste-sorting classes in school.

DShenzhen has been doing rubbish sorting for nine years.

    二、七选五

Going from middle school to freshman year of high school is a big change. 16

    Be open to new friendships.

High school is all about experiencing new things, including new friendships. Getting to know people you haven’t met before is a great way to broaden your horizons (眼界). 17 Simply siting with a new person at lunch can be enough to get the ball rolling ().

    Explore the campus.

For most people, going off to high school means heading off to a new campus. 18 They might be able to show you around the campus, which will make you a bit more confident as you go on with your freshman year.

    Get organised.

Academically (学业上) speaking, high school and middle school are very different. 19 You can buy a planner and spend a few minutes each night going over the notes you took in class that day. Staying on top of your studies will make the transition (过渡) from middle to high school much easier.

    20

While there’s no need to plan every day for the next three years, it can’t hurt to make a note of classes you want to take or activities you’d like to try. Believe it or not, the three years go by really fast. Having a plan in place will help you make the most of your high school experience.

    ACreate a three-year plan.

    BBe open to new experiences.

    CIf you’re nervous, start small.

DTry to get as organised as possible so you can stay on top of your work.

E.That way, you’ll have a better idea of some of the things you can expect.

F.If you worry about the unknown, reach out to the school and see if someone can help.

G.Here are some ways to help you deal with anxious feelings and prepare for the first year.

    61Hi Linda,

I'm sorry to learn that you are having such a bad time. Actually, most people will feel homesick and anxious when they leave home and come to a new place, especially a foreign country. So don't worry too much.

Here are some tips for you. First, you'd better try to change some of your habits so that you can get used to the new environment as soon as possible. Second, make more new friends, who can share their hobbies and ideas with you. You will feel less homesick with many friends around you. Third, you should take part in some social activities. It will help you learn more about the local customs and cultures.

I hope my advice will be useful.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
