A team f researchers at Brigham and Wmen’s Hspital, Harvard Medical Schl, has develped a system t use a smartphne camera t test fr viral infectins. In their paper published in the jurnal Science Advances, the grup describes their system, which invlves the use f an external micrchip device and a smartphne system that uses a trained deep-learning algrithm.
As the pandemic has gripped the wrld fr mst f this year, scientists have been lking fr ways t slw the spread f the next ne. In this new effrt, the team has develped a smartphne-based system that can be used by nn-medical peple t test fr a variety f viral infectins.
The system is made up f a smartphne, an external micrchip device and sftware. Bdy fluid samples are placed int a channel n the micrchip device, which is then dipped in a small amunt f H2O2. The resulting reactin leads t the frmatin f bubbles. The bubbles develp in unique patterns based in part n viruses in the fluid sample. The user pints their smartphne camera at the bubbling sample and starts the deep-learning algrithm that has already been trained t identify the patterns and therefre recgnize the presence f viruses. The whle prcess takes abut 50 minutes. The researchers have thus far taught their system t recgnize just three viruses, Zika and Hepatitis B and C.But testing shws the system t be 99% accurate. They nte that their system is mre prtable and cst-effective than ther slutins in the wrks.
The researchers suggest that their system culd be rapidly trained t recgnize new viruses if the need arises, and the micrchip device culd be sent t ht spts in the future. Such technlgy, the researchers suggest, culd help t stp future pandemics if used widely. The researchers als nte that the system culd be immediately useful in infectin prne areas lacking testing labs.
4.What’s the purpse f the text?
A.T advise peple t use a new smartphne camera.
B.T intrduce the develpment f deep-learning algrithm.
C.T explain the inventin f a new micrchip device.
D.T shw a new finding abut testing fr viral infectins.
5.Why did the researchers develp the new system?
A.T educate rdinary peple with medical skills.
B.T help prevent the pandemic frm spreading fast.
C.T try t treat an illness with a smartphne camera.
D.T make smartphnes mre prtable and pwerful.
6.Which is the right wrking rder f the system?
①Bubbles f a liquid sample are frmed. ②Samples react with H2O2.
③Fluid samples are cllected in a special device. ④Viruses in bubbles are recgnized autmatically.
⑤The sftware is started t examine the bubbles.
A.③②①⑤④B.③①②④⑤
C.②③①⑤④D.②①③④⑤
7.What is the attitude f the researchers t the new system?
A.Indifferent.B.Dubtful.C.Cnfident.D.Curius.
Transprtatin and cmmunicatin netwrks bring peple tgether. Yet smetimes peple themselves create barriers (障碍) t transprtatin and cmmunicatin. In sme cuntries, laws stp peple frm mving freely frm place t place. Over the centuries, many grups f peple have been denied the freedm t travel because f their race, religin, r natinality. In the Middle Ages, fr example, Jews were ften frbidden t mve abut freely within certain cities. Suth Africa’s gvernment used t require black Africans t carry passes when they travel within the cuntry. Sme gvernments require all citizens t carry identificatin papers and t reprt t gvernment fficials when they mve.
Cuntries set up custms psts at their brders. Freign travellers must g thrugh a custms inspectin befre they are allwed t travel in the cuntry. Usually travelers have t carry special papers such as passprts and visas (签证). Sme cuntries even limit the number f visitrs t their cuntry each year. Others allw turists t visit nly certain areas f the cuntry, r they may require that travellers be with an fficial guide at all times during their stay.
Many f thse barriers t travel als act as barriers t cmmunicatin. When tw gvernments have cnflicts with each ther n imprtant matters, they usually d nt want their citizens t exchange news r ideas freely. Cuntries ften try t keep military r industrial infrmatin secret.
Tday, peple have the ability t travel, t cmmunicate, and t transprt gds mre quickly and easily than ever befre. Natural barriers that were difficult r dangerus t crss a hundred years ag can nw be crssed easily. The barriers that peple themselves make are nt s easy t vercme. But in spite f all the different kinds f barriers, peple cntinue t enjy travel and the exchange f gds and ideas.

The human face is a remarkable piece f wrk. The astnishing variety f facial features helps peple recgnize each ther and is vital t the frmatin f cmplex scieties. S is the face’s ability t send emtinal signals, whether thrugh an uncnscius red face r the artifice f a false smile. Peple spend much f their waking lives reading faces, fr signs f attractin, hatred, trust and fraud. They als spend plenty f time trying t hide true feelings r intentins.
Technlgy is rapidly catching up with the human ability t read faces. In America facial recgnitin is used by churches t track wrshippers’ attendance; in Britain, by retailers t spt past shplifters. In China, it cnfirms the identities f ride-hailing drivers, permits turists t enter attractins and lets peple pay fr things with a smile. Apple’s new iPhne is expected t use it t unlck the hme screen.
Set against human skills, such applicatins might seem incremental(增值的). Sme breakthrughs, such as flight r the Internet, bviusly transfrm human abilities; facial recgnitin seems merely t encde(编码) them. Althugh faces are unique t individuals, they are als public, s technlgy des nt, at first sight, interfere with smething that is private. And yet the ability t recrd, stre and analyze images f faces cheaply, quickly and n a vast scale prmises ne day t bring abut fundamental changes t pinins f privacy, fairness and trust.
Start with privacy. One big difference between faces and ther bimetric data, such as fingerprints, is that they wrk at a distance. Anyne with a phne can take a picture fr facial-recgnitin prgrams t use. Facebk's bank f facial images cannt be used by thers, but the Silicn Valley giant culd btain pictures f visitrs t a car shwrm, say, and later use facial recgnitin t serve them ads fr cars. Law-enfrcement agencies nw have a pwerful weapn in their ability t track criminals, but at enrmus ptential cst t citizens’ privacy.
The face is nt just a name-tag. It displays a lt f ther infrmatin—and machines can read that, t. Again, that prmises benefits. Sme firms are analyzing faces t prvide autmated diagnses f rare genetic cnditins, far earlier than wuld therwise be pssible. Systems that measure emtin may give autistic(孤独症的) peple a grasp f scial signals they find difficult.
12.Which f the fllwing statement abut facial recgnitin is true accrding t the passage?
A.It is widely applied by Chinese in many fields.
B.It is applied t track wrshippers by American churches.
C.It has been applied by Apple t unlck hme screen.
D.It is applied t catch thieves by plice.
13.What des the third paragraph mainly talk abut?
A.Flight and the Internet surely transfrm human abilities.
B.Facial recgnitin will cause fundamental changes t minds.
C.Facial expressins are nt nly unique but als public.
D.Facial recgnitin has just the same effects as ther breakthrughs.
14.Frm the last tw paragraphs, we can infer that __________.
A.the face is superir t ther bimetric data
B.peple can keep a balance between face and privacy
C.the face has shwn many benefits especially in medicine
D.fingerprints is a pwerful weapn in tracking criminals
15.What is the best title f the passage?
A.Human facial expressinsB.Reading faces
C.Scientific breakthrughsD.Nwhere t hide
