“The letters are all from sea ports. The writer was on a ship when he wrote the letters,” I replied.
‘‘Very good, Watson! And John’s enemy is in London already!”
“Well, I hope they won’t kill young John,” I said.
But they did. The next morning, we read in the newspaper that a policeman found him die near Waterloo Station. Holmes was very angry about it.
“He came to me for help and those men murdered him! I’m going to find them, if it’s the last thing I do!” he said to me, and he hurried out of the house.
At night, when he came back, he was tired, but pleased. He said, “I know the names of John’s enemies! And now I’m going to send them a surprise! This will frighten them!” He took five pips from an orange put them in an envelope. On it he wrote “S. H. for J. C.”
“I’m sending the pips to captain James Calhoun. His ship is called the Star. He and his men are sailing back to Georgia, USA.”
“ How did you find him, Holmes?” I asked.

My father was very hard on us children. His attitude didn’t so often as I grew into a man and went to college.
I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in bad weather. If I grumbled, he would say in his loudest voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”
The walk didn’t upset me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less valued because my father didn’t seem to care about my safety. But that feeling disappeared one spring evening.
It was a very difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I wanted to go home very much. When the bus reached the stop, I stepped off and began the long journey home.
There were a row of hedges on the driveway that climbed along the hill to our house. I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that special evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something grey moving along the top of the hedge and moving toward the house. When getting closer, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I came home, he would stand behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I arrived safely. I kept back the tears. He did care, after all.
Later, that spot of grey became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the green plants. When I reached home, I would find my father sitting in his chair. “ So, my son, it’s you!” he’d say.
I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.”

Do you want to improve your physics and chemistry grades?32.
The American Psychological Association did an interesting study. More than 400 students from schools in New York City took part in it. The students were divided into three groups.
Group 1 read a typical textbook that describes the achievements of great scientists. Group 2 read about those scientists' personal struggles. For example, as a Jew, Einstein ran away from Nazi Germany to avoid persecution(迫害). The last group read about the scientists' intellectual struggles, such as Marie Curie's failed scientific tests. 33.
The students took a science exam before the study. After the six-week study: they took another. Scientists found those in Groups 2 and 3 improved their science grades. Students in Group 1 didn't see a grade increase.34.
The study was led by Xiaodong Lin-Siegler, a teacher at Columbia University. According to Xiaodong, kids often think Einstein was truly intelligent. They believe they will never match him.35.Along the way, there are many failures.
Students who read the struggle stories more probably said that great scientists were likes themselves. The "great minds" also had to overcome obstacles(阻碍)to achieve success, says science textbooks fail to bring Xiaodong science to life.36.Instead, they just see a long list of facts that they have to remember. Xiaodong thinks textbooks should include more stories about how great scientists had to struggle to succeed. And students should focus more on how these scientists dealt with the obstacles they met along the way.
A.Many of them fail to realize that any success requires a long journey.
B.As a result, students seldom regard science as part of their everyday lives.
C.These stories about struggles also told students how the scientists dealt with these difficulties.
D.Maybe you should first learn something about the struggles of great scientists.
E.Some of them even had lower grades after the study.

When I got the first prize in the contest, I felt happy from my deep heart.
