Thanksgiving Day is a typical American holiday. It is an annual holiday. The theme of the festival has always been peace and plenty,health and happiness.

The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by the English settlers(移民者) in Plymouth, Massachusetts on December 13, 1621. The settlers had come to America in the previous year. They came because they were persecuted(迫害) in their native land. In September ,1620,they sailed for " the New World" on the ship called Mayflower. The ship was carrying 102 people. After 66 days at sea, they landed at what is now Plymouth in the icy season. The first winter was very cold and only half of them survived.

The next year, the native Indians became the settlers' friends and show them how to plant corn and grow other things for food. The settlers reaped a good harvest in the fall. In return , they invited the Indians to a big dinner outdoors on long tables in order to give thanks to God for the wonderful harvest. They ate, drank and played games for 3 days.

After that, Thanksgiving was celebrated irregularly(不规则的). The first national Thanksgiving Day was set on November 26,1789 by George Washington. In 1864, President Linclon named the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

Today , Americans usually hold a big family dinner to celebrate the holiday, which often lasts 4 days. They have such traditional foods as roast turkey, pumpkin pie, and apples. They relax and spend times with their families.
